The What's For Dinner Thread - November '09(recipe index in OP)

Laura, is the cashew cicken recipe anywhere on WFD? I would love that one.

Another 20 minute nap :headache:...I thought i just got her down for a long one.

Hey y'all,

We had some delicious Ginormous Shrimp last night! Stayed over until late visiting with DD & SIL, it was a good evening.

You girls have been so chatty, my brain is all confused!

What I did process:

Kathy, Glad the dr. doesn't think it's serious! Did you see your primary or a cardiologist? I'm sure you're EKG will be just fine, but I will be praying that it is!
Hugs:hug: & lots of love!

Nan, So how much weight are you going to have Buddy lose, before you tell that the doctor is a wacko?! :rotfl: I think this is a perfect opportunity to force the Man to broaden his food horizon! ;)

Becky, Thanks for the egg recipe! I think we'll have that for dinner one day next week. I'll have to go back to see what else you served with it.

Ann, I'm sorry your girl is having so much trouble with teething! Sorry for Mom too.:hug:

Michelle, Have a great time!! :cool1:

Joanne, Yes I too would just ignore the fact that he's snowboarding instead of using his new skis! Let him rent for quite a while! Just the facts please Son! ;)

Aimee, Please take it easy! Don't make all of us Moms started fussing!;)

Maria, I'm sad that you're not feeling any better! Praying for you friend.

Laura, I've never had linguini & clams. Do I need fresh clams to fix a decent version? (We don't find fresh clams down here very often.) After your pic, I noticed progresso has jarred clams in a garlic sauce. That's probably a bad idea, right? Even nanatized probably wouldn't come close to the real thing.

Kat, Have you ever purchased fresh clams? I'm thinking WF must have them?

I haven't decided whats for dinner yet. I have the chicken paprikash that we didn't eat Thurs because Bob came home sick. I might try to make Hungarian noodles or dumplings for that. Or I might do something with the beautiful boiled shrimp from last night.

Praying for the people of Chile & everywhere else that this Tsunami may strike.:flower3: This is awfully scary stuff!

Sheryl, fresh is best but I have used the whole clams they sell in cans.

Sheryl, linguine & clam sauce is the only time I used can or jarred clams.:thumbsup2

Sheryl - I saw my primary doctor. I've never purchased clams before but I'd bet WF would have them! The friends I mentioned that are in Hawaii are Chelsi & Jason.:sad1:

Kat, prayers for your friends and all those feeling the impact.

I saw this on tv today it looked heavenly, and got 5 stars.

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

Filling:
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (1 pound) box confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
1 cup toffee bits

In a bowl, mix together the cream cheese, eggs, vanilla extract, confectioners' sugar and butter. Beat on medium speed until smooth. Fold in the toffee bits with a spatula.

Pour the filling over the cake mixture and spread it evenly. Bake until the center is just a little bit gooey, about 40 to 50 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely. Cut into pieces and serve

Ann i never made the toffee gooey cake but love the pumpkin and other version that I can't remember right now.

I hope the Tsumani is not devistating. That earthquake was horrible.

Nan Why is it always men who can lose weight so easily or just can't gain weight? I could just walk past a donut shop and pick up 5 lbs. I hate hearing about diets I always find the pounds people lose :rolleyes1

Aimee Rest up.

Tonight is spaghetti and meat sauce.

I was at Whole foods earlier and picked up more grains. I could go crazy in the bulk section, good thing that store is not close by.

Had a class today. Can I just tell you, sitting in kindergarden chairs is a killer.:rotfl:

Watching the stuff about the tsunami. They are so focused on Hawaii and someone they were interviewing said that there is no damage reported there yet but that there were reports that there is in Ventura, CA.

Janice- I know about that window shopping weight! I am a victim too!

Ann- I have had the pumpkin and the peanut butter gooey cakes Now I want toffee!

SHeryl= how is Bob feeling today?

Maria- are you feeling better?

I am cooking today. Dan adn Erica and DOnny are here for dinner, Roasted chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, stove top stuffing (YUCH) beets and corn. I picked up an Italian bread adn made a maple whole wheat bread. Chocolate cake for dessert. Buddy can enjoy this weekend.....come Monday his food horizons will indeed broaden :lmao:
Maple Whole-wheat Bread
makes 1 9x5 inch loaf

3/4 c warm water
1 pkg active dry yeast
1/2 c warm milk
1/4 c maple syrup (grade B if you can get it)
2 tbsps vegetable oil
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 c all-purpose flour
2 c whole wheat flour

Dissolve the yeast in the warm water in a large bowl dissolved and let stand until foamy. Mix in the warm milk, maple syrup, oil, and salt. Stir in 1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour. Stir in whole-wheat flour and mix well. Add the remaining all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup at a time, until the dough is soft and workable (there may be some flour left over).

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 to 8 minutes. Form into a ball tucking edges underneath. Spray the inside of a large bowl with cooking spray; place dough, seam-side down, in bowl; spritz top with cooking spray; and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

Heat oven to 375F.

Lightly grease a 9x5 inch loaf pan. Punch the dough down and turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead lightly then form dough into a loaf and place in the pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45 minutes.

Bake for 35 minutes or until top is golden brown and the bottom of the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Remove loaf from the pan and cool on a wire rack.

My bread rose beautifully but seemed to sink a little in teh oven. It is very good though. I also made a maple butter to go on the bread.

I'm making cashew chicken for dinner tonight.

I want the recipe, too!

Got info on our friends in Hawaii, they are completely packed and are waiting in a Walmart parking lot in Kona to be evacuated. They were supposed to fly out tomorrow and have been arguing with American Airlines to see if they can get a flight out today.

I had read that the Hilo airport is closed right now because it's along the coast but I'm not sure whether they are flying from Kona or Hilo.

I hope they are able to get out soon! :goodvibes

A church member/friend called and are adament about bringing dinner tonight. They were going to earlier in the week but the unexpected snow put a damper on that. I told her we were okay, really, but I think she already had it all prepped and such. Who am I to argue :confused3 So, if it looks good we'll eat that tonight! If not, I'll throw it in the freezer for later.

Today it's sunny, warm, and gorgeous! :confused3 4 days ago it was snowing. Oh I hear spring a coming!!!

Ann- I have had the pumpkin and the peanut butter gooey cakes Now I want toffee!

.

Just keep them away from my follow fluffy friend Buddy!!!!! Have I said how much I hate Drs. with the exception of my OB. I have my dreaded rescheduled colonoscopy this month! :scared1: It is something I must do.

Good grief what a day we have had and it aint over yet my friends.

Phone rang at 6am to our DD Stephanie telling us she was rushing DH to the ER. "No,no you don't need to come just wanted you to know." Ah thanks sweetie!! Now we are on pins and needles waiting to hear so we sat and drank coffee til 8 when she calls and says that he is passing a kidney stone. They are back home and he is sleeping. OMGoodness!!

In the mean time I start a load of laundry and Doug gets in the shower. I go to put the Laundry in the dryer and my kitchen is flooded. I get Doug out of the shower and we mop what we can and leave to get our taxes figured. This is the only bright spot of the day - we don't owe anything. :thumbsup2 It really does help having a kid in college.

We get home and start tearing everything apart to see what is wrong. It was a bird that had gotten in the drain pipe - Don't ask L O N G story!! The water is off and Doug is called out on a gas leak call and has been gone for 3 hours now.

So here I sit not being able to do a thing, my kitchen is torn up, the basement is a disaster, and the laundry room is soaking wet. What a great day!!

WFDT ~ NOTHING!!! We might be able to go grab something -oh maybe around midnight.

I sure hope your day was so much better. Thank goodness for tomorrows.

Ann – I watched that Paula Deen show today too! Everything looked great.

Nan – Your dinner sounds great! Enjoy your family!

Ellen – You need wine and a big hug.

I'm glad you're doing it :thumbsup2 It's really not that bad :goodvibes

Good grief what a day we have had and it aint over yet my friends.

 Oh honey, grab a box of chocolates and glass of Rose Regale. You need it!

The couple brought over a delicious roasted (whole) chicken, peas, multigrain bread, and rice pilaf. We decided it was what's for dinner :thumbsup2

Laura, is the cashew cicken recipe anywhere on WFD?

No, this was something new I was trying. I have to tell you, it was not a recipe I would pass on, however, I am willing to tweak things until it works.

Do I need fresh clams to fix a decent version?

I always use fresh clams. However, plenty of people use canned or jarred...you may just need to add more salt or use more clam juice to make it taste right.

Had a class today. Can I just tell you, sitting in kindergarden chairs is a killer.
 When I helped out in the kids' kindergarten classes, I would always try to make sure there were only enough chairs for the kids, so I could stand.

Good grief what a day we have had

I'm sorry you had a rough day. I hope tomorrow is better. I agree with Ann...you deserve a glass of wine.

We're going to my parents' house for dinner tomorrow. Since Becky is heading to her ILs, Mom is making roast beef. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

I'm glad you're doing it :thumbsup2 It's really not that bad :goodvibes

It is going to be my second. I am overdue because of my pregnancy. I am nervous because of our awful family history and my brother having some recent issues.

Ellen I really hate days like that. Luckily they don't come often.

Aimee Wow you have nice people cooking for you. That's sounds like a great dinner.

I decided to go to Costco today. I am glad I went I can stay home and lay around on the couch.

The house smells really good with the tomato sauce cooking.

I'm ashamed to say that's something else that I should have been doing for a long time. Daddy had colon cancer too. The poor man had so many things.:sad2:

Ellen, what a day you've had!!!!!
Hope your with your Honey by now & relaxing:hug:
