The What's For Dinner Thread - March '11 (recipe index in OP)

Lauren – Hugs to you on the anniversary of Charles passing. Wish I were closer. I’m glad you’re hooked on the yogurt & granola!

On the MickeyD subject…it’s been at least 3 years since I’ve had anything from there. When Kyle and I were out truck shopping the other day he wanted MD’s for lunch so I figured since I’ve been good and lost the weight I’d go for it. Big mistake, my stomach was killing me the rest of the day.

WFD - Bacon wrapped chipotle shrimp, charred corn relish (my crack) and rice pilaf.

For those of you not on facebook, Sheryl is a Nana! Baby Jude was born early this morning weighing in at 5 lbs 14 oz!!!!

Awesome, Glynis, thanks! I sent your info to my friend as well. I was guessing 10-12 due to people not being able to come each time, that way there are still enough to have a grouping.

No problem. We also wanted to limit the group to a number that could be held comfortably in the smallest house of the group. Does that make sense? We've had lots of other women ask to join our group, but we've had to say no, simply because, if everyone came, we wouldn't have room for all. We have helped set up book clubs in other neighborhoods, though.

Hooray for Sheryl!!! I saw the picture on FB and he is adorable!!!!

No idea what's for dinner tonight. Right now we are making breakfast burritos, and hopefully that will hold us a while. It's a yucky, snowy, cold day, and I think we need something comforting.

I made Tatertot Casserole for dinner last night. Yes, I did. lol It was very good, but I bet the sodium content alone would be enough to choke you if you had it on a regular basis.

Nancy, good luck today!

I'm so excited for Sheryl. He sure is a cutie patootie!

Busy day for us around the house - and it's HOT here. We are having dinner with friends tonight so no cooking likely.

FredinFL Welcome

Nancy Good luck today:thumbsup2

Yeah!! for Sheryl:hug:

It is a going to be a warm weekend here:dance3: I guess the treat of a big storm might be worth it.:confused3 But Minnie might not think so.:sad2:

I think I might try to cook out tonight. I have a taste for char.:goodvibes

I have no idea where the last week just went. It went very quickly.

We have about 12 in our club. However, not all of them come every month. On average we have about 7-8 come each month.

We first met together as a group to "lay the ground rules" for our club. We decided to meet once a month, as that would give plenty of time for everyone to get hold of a copy of the book and read it. One of our main rules is that not everyone has to love, or even like, all of the books. If you are offended by something in a book, feel free to stop reading. We've saved a lot of headaches with that rule!

On our first meeting, we were all asked to bring a list of 5 books we wanted to put on a list. We merged the lists, and gave everyone 3 votes. The top vote getter was the book we started with. Then we voted again, for the month following. We try to stay 2 months ahead, as some books take longer to get than others. So, for instance, we met last night, and already knew that the book for May's meeting would be "The Graveyard Book", but voted on June's book (The King's Speech).

Goodies are optional in our meetings! We really don't want it to become a one upmanship thing. We would rather have someone open a bag of M&M's than feel like they couldn't participate because they couldn't bring in a dozen gourmet cupcakes, etc.

Oh, yes, our iron clad rule is that we meet on the first Thursday of each month. Knowing that it's the same day each month makes it easier for everyone to schedule it in. Sometimes things happen and not everyone can make it, but that's ok.

I became the "secretary" for the group, so I keep the list, print it out and take it for voting each month. I also email all the ladies after each meeting and let them know they were missed, or that we were glad to see them. I let them know where the next meeting will be and give them a reminder a to the title of the book. I also let them know what the next book will be so they can be looking forward to it. The Monday before our meetings, I send out an email reminder that book club is coming up. Easy, peasy!

I've said it before, but it bears repeating... my book club is a life saver! It's a place to gather with women of similar age, and interests without spouses or children. We decompress together, and really have had some great discussions. I don't know what I'd do without my club! It's also neat to see what kinds of books the different ladies put on the list. I've been exposed to books that I would never have chosen for myself.

If you have any other questions, let me know. As you can see, I'm always glad to share.

I like the guidelines your group came up with! What were some of your favorite books? I need to check out a book or two from the library to read later this month on a plane.

Laura- Not evet had FOF???????????? My other favorite is Friendly's Fish-ama-jig

I've never had it either. We did not eat fish growing up. Someone in my family has a severe seafood allergy, so we never ate it aside from a few fish sticks when I was very young.

I can safely get their Coke, fries, and McNuggets. Their burgers make me sick. Also, their "milk" products are hit or miss for me. I say "milk" because I'm not sure they use real milk in their shakes and ice cream products.

It is a going to be a warm weekend here:dance3: I guess the treat of a big storm might be worth it.:confused3 But Minnie might not think so.:sad2:

The weather.com people are hyping up the TOR:CON thing and making another big to do over this one. Apparently we get a big storm every week now?

It's getting to be pretty warm down here. The heat index here was 89 a bit ago. I think I'm going to have to succumb and use the a/c soon. We had frozen pizza for lunch, and we cooked it in the toaster oven and it doesn't warm the house nearly as much as the main oven.

Lauren -

Sheryl - Congratulations!

Lauri - Welcome Home! It was good to see you! I enjoyed the short time we got to spend together!

Marilyn- you are wicked busy lately!

This is my busy time and will be until mid-June then it picks up again in August. :thumbsup2

There is! :thumbsup2 I used to work there many years ago. Had to fill and clean that machine plenty of times. :rotfl:

I totally enjoyed the personal tour you gave us of NOLA. The lunch with everyone was awesome too. Next time will have to be L O N G E R :thumbsup2

Supper here is going to be chicken breast on the grill new potatoes and a salad.

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw thte little Sweetie on FB!

The vendor fair was nice. Quiet but I made some contacts and that was my goal. OTOH, Welby stole the show! Not my words, mind you..........every other vendor's :woohoo:

Janice- Welby had me laughing, she totally forgot that you and she are not neighbors :rotfl: I told her that if FB made her so close to all of us she needs to join our dinner group.

Dinner is steaks that I have been saving because they came from Welby, baked sweet potatoes, salad adn garlic bread. Poma cocktails to start

Poma Cocktail

Poma pomegranite liquor
Fresca
ice
YUM!

Nancy I thought Welby was confused unless you have a Chicago out by you.:lmao: I would have loved to go though Mr A would have been beside himself he hates when I "need" to go candle and to Bath and Body shopping.

Since it is so beautiful out we are grilling chicken breasts with fingerling potatoes and using the last of my precious asparagus. I will grill that too.;)

Janice- she was not confused............you are her friend therefore you live closeby. That is her story and she is sticking to it.

I have to say that she is exhausted. She got herself so worked up over the fair, baked cupcakes all night to offer and worried about having enough product. So she made more. I dropped some things off a while ago and she had hit a wall. Brian is on his way home from an auction and her dinner plans changed from grilling to pizza.

Then dan called and said Buddy asked the fam over tonight so our plans have changed as well. Pizza here too ;) Marisa is picking up pomegranate juice so i can make mocktails for Erica.

It's overcast and chilly here today. Went to my youngest godsons arena football game, they lost badly. :headache: The coaches kept switching the kids in their positions and the poor boys seemed so confused.

I swear some of these parents are just too much. :sad2: At one point I was yelling to my godson to "get him" (meaning tackle him) then cheered when he did. A mother from the other team said "my, what's all the noise for" in this smirky voice. :confused3 I felt like asking if I was supposed to tell them they sucked duck poop instead of cheering when they did good.

A father who was going from one end of the field to the other came back and said he had to move back because two parents were in each others faces because of what one of them said. :sad2:

Another was telling one of the competitor parents she was not going to stop cheering just because they were losing, apparently one of the other parents was giving her grief. She and that parent had been standing next to each other the whole game talking and cheering and had not a problem.

Just a quick check-in...

Congratulations to Sheryl and Angelina. Welcome Baby Jude!

Nancy -- I haven't had the fish-a-ma-jig either. My kids hate fast food or anything like it, so we don't eat out much. (I am not complaining!) I'm glad Welby did well at the vendor fair!

Dinner tonight was just me and the kids and my parents tonight. Beck has not been feeling well, although it sounded like she could have had dinner with us. I do not make these decisions. We had antipasto, pasta fresca and bruschetta. Dinner was later than usual for the weekend because Liam had a baseball scrimmage. He pitched two scoreless innings, and he made a couple of nice plays at shortstop.

We like tater tot casserole, here! We don't eat it often, but it's a treat when we do!

Welcome to our thread!!!

I like the guidelines your group came up with! What were some of your favorite books? I need to check out a book or two from the library to read later this month on a plane.

How to choose??? I really liked The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It's an easy read, and it's really good! I also liked Three Cups of Tea. Nonfiction that was amazing!!! I'm really liking "The Graveyard Book." It's a retelling of "The Jungle Book." Very fun! It's hard to choose from our list, because we've been going for about 7 years and that's a lot of books!!! If you want, I'll PM you some of my other favorites!

Good to know!

And that is crazy about the parents at the game. :sad2:

Awww, thanks! I enjoyed hanging out with you! The new part of City Park is really cool....I need to go back! And yes, stay longer next time!

Thanks! The library has 1 copy each of the 2nd two books, and an e-book and audio version of the first. I am debating holding them and having them sent to my branch, or going to check out the main library downtown (where both of those books are). My branch library is quite limited. You can't really browse in there.

I might ask for more titles if I can't get these or after I read these. Thanks again!

Hi everyone! Just a quick fly-by. I read thru the week's messages - you all have been busy!!

I did finally get the rest of my papers graded Wednesday night, and I have been feeling under the weather. So I haven't been online too much this week other than work. I have a good bit of pain on my right side and the dr thought it was my appendix. So I had a CT scan and it isn't my appendix (good), but they aren't sure yet what it is. So I see a surgeon Tuesday about having a biopsy or something.... :confused3 I am trying not to borrow trouble, but any prayers would be appreciated.

So I haven't been cooking much either. Tonight we had beef tips and gravy over noodles and a salad. I was happy today to find some Mullen's French dressing -- my dad loved that stuff and I ate it as a kid, and can't find it near me. But I got 2 big bottles today while in my old stomping grounds.

Tomorrow we're having New York Strips on the grill, steak fries, veggie, and salad.

Hope to be online more this week...
Julie

And that is crazy about the parents at the game. :sad2:

HS games are so much easier, the other teams parents are on the other side of the field and most times you can't hear them. :rotfl:

The worst ones I have seen are at the ES, MS level. :sad2: At one game the two older ones were playing in MS this one set of parents showed up in their Ravens jerseys and at one point when the refs called a penatly on their team they started going on about our team being Redskins fans. And that we were white trash. :confused3

All of our teams parent that were wearing team stuff were wearing our teams spirit wear, shirts, sweatshirts, jackets or hats.

And, bragging just a little, I live in one of the richest counties in the US.;)
