The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

Well my husband didn't answer his phone, so I figured I'd tell you guys-- I got the job I applied for a few weeks ago!!! I'm really excited, it's at the place I work, just a different position and it starts in May instead of the end of June.

:cool1: That's great news! Congratulations!

I hope I have similar news to share come Monday!

So my mom has been planning this trip to Boston for the weekend of May 9-10. At first she said she would plan everything, but the other day she called me (in New Orleans, no less) to ask me what I want to do in Boston (while I'm still trying to figure out what to do in New Orleans. :rotfl:) Anyways, now that Boston is coming up as the next trip, I guess it's time to figure out what to do and (of course) where to eat! We are staying at the Boston Marriott Cambridge and I don't think we have a car. We are NOT foodies (clearly!), so casual food is best. Thanks!

Oh...dinner last night was baked chicken with Slap Ya Mama. :lmao:

Congrats Robyn!

Quick check in...Kat had some stuff to do with Kyle today. That is why she has not checked in. Not sure if she will have time to post today or tomorrow but I will keep you posted...

:yay::yay::yay:

Ann- hope you can catch a nap later

We have some wicked storms so my plans for the day/night are shot (outdoor arts fest). I told DH earlier this week that I wanted to go out tonight for dinner so we'll do that anyways. I'm really craving Chili's :confused3

TGIF...

I had a terrible night with DS last night. He was up from 1:00am - 4:00am. I am being lazy today and lounging in my jammies allday. I have been on the couch most of the morning with a headache and sore legs. I know it is due to lack of sleep. Hoping to catch a cat nap if he decides to nap. I will be reading along with you all, but forgive me if my brain is mush. I even called my DM and told her not to expect us for dinner tonight. I told her Dad and I need the rest!

I hope you all are well and have a great day.

Ann

Hope you get yer nap..

I have a friend who is driving from Dallas to New Orleans tonight after work, through those storms. I hope she's okay.

Actually, they're stopping in Alexandria and then going the rest of the way in the morning, but still...

Then you'll need to take the "T" into the actual city. There are a ton of places around Harvard...some great Indian if you want the names...
Union Oyster House, Black Rose for music & burgers.
Mama Maria's in the North End
I would take the water taxi (right next to the aquarium) to Charlestown & go to the Warren Tavern....Greg & I used to go there a few times a month..Wave to my old building, I miss it terribly:sad1:

Went for the rest of my tests this morning.......
Supposed to go out to dinner with neighbors tonight but I'm not feeling up to it.

Since I can't find decent Indian around here, that's an easy choice for me! I honestly love them both.

I think the worst of it was this morning... my dogs got up and I opened the door to let them out to pee and all 4 of them stood staring at the monsoon, heard the thunder, and hightailed it back into the safeness of the house  3 of the 4 finally went out about an hour later; couldn't hold it anymore I guess :confused3 They didn't dawdle, that's for sure!

Thanks for the congrats.

Bethany- You have to get a cannoli from Mike's pastry no matter what. Cannoli's are my favorite and those are the best I've ever had. Maria mentioned the Union Oyster House, I've never been but I believe it's the oldest restaurant in the US, so that might be fun. But I would just fill up on cannoli's.

Scotlass- I would pick Indian, but that's because I've never had it and would like to try it. Slim pickins around here for take out, mostly fried clams and oysters.

Aimee- My sister in law lives in Austin, so I noticed on the weather this morning you weren't having the best weather. Have fun at dinner.

Hope Kathy's doing well, Sheryl too.

Morning everyone,

Ann ~ great news about Emma. It won't be long now. Your Dad must be relieved that it is arthritis. The medicine will really help.

Sheryl ~ prayers are with you today.

Amy ~ Thanks for the recipe for the wraps. They really look good. I might try them this weekend.

Rouge ~ congratulations on the job. Way to go!!

It is raining and gloomy here again today. Bad storms are to hit later today. Suppose to rain all weekend. I don't mind cloudy and gloomy as long as it rains. The wheat really can use the percip. Pretty soon though the farmers will start complaining because they need to get into the fields to start planting. We are never happy huh? We are about 1/2 way through calving and have only lost the 3 that came way to early. We have even had 4 sets of twins. That doesn't happen very often. They are so darn cute.

We are having pancakes and bacon for dinner. I can't wait. I love breakfast for dinner.

Make it a great day.

Not sure how I missed this!!!!

YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!! Great news!:wizard::dance3::wizard:

INDIAN!!

Bethany, I can give you some Boston recommendations. Are you looking for ideas for food, or stuff to do? You don't need a car. Your hotel is right near the Kendall Sqaure stop on the red line. Driving in Boston is a nightmare anyway.

It's kind of touristy, but if you have not seen the city before, I highly recommend that you take a Duck Tour. It is really fun! I've gone a couple of times. The boat takes you through the city, points out various landmarks, and then drives into the Charles River for a water tour. This is a very popular activity, so I recommend that you buy your tickets in advance online. Here is a link to their website:

http://www.bostonducktours.com/

For a birds eye view of the city, you can go to the top of the Prudential Tower and visit the SkyWalk.

http://www.prudentialcenter.com/shop/shop_detail.php?id=64

There's a restaurant up there too--Top of the Hub, but it's really overpriced and the food is mediocre. I'd just go to the SkyWalk.

The flowers should be blooming in the Public Garden (well some of them anyway), so it is worth stopping by and looking at the gardens. There is a small pond in the middle, with old swan boats that you can ride on. It's a nice way to relax for a couple of minutes.

I also highly recommend a walking tour of the Freedom Trail. You can go on your own (there is a red line painted on the sidewalk that you follow), or take a guided tour. You'll hit all the big historical sites, and the walk is not overly long:

Foodwise:

Union Oyster House has great atmosphere, but the food is not good. At all. I would recommend stopping by the bar for a drink, maybe a cup of chowder, but that's it.

One of my favorite casual places is Silvertone Bar and Grill. It's located right off Boston Common, which is adjacent to the Public Garden. Here is their menu:

If you like fish, there is a Legal Seafoods right in Kendall Square. They do a nice job with plain grilled fish. I think their sides are boring and the vegetables are bland, but that's just my opinion. The fish is always very fresh though!

For casual Italian in the North End, you might like Antico Forno. They have a wood burning oven and serve pizzas and pasta from it. Here's their menu (they have an annoying website):

http://www.anticofornoboston.com/dinner.html

Or just go to the North End Pizzeria Regina for a slice, or a whole pie. Get there early or you will have to wait in line. OH, and DON'T go to any other Pizzeria Regina! Only the one in the North End is any good.

One more...Giacomos in the North End. They don't have a website and they don't take reservations, but here is their menu on menupages:

I concur on Mike's Pastry. I give Modern Pastry a slight edge for cannolis, but Mike's has such an amazing array of well, everything, that you should definitely stop in. It's a sugar haven!

Thanks! :goodvibes
Yeah we need food and stuff to do ideas. My dad is going to be in town for a full week with my mom, but my brother and his wife, and my DH and I are going in just for the weekend.

Robin -- Great news about the job! Congratulations!

Ann -- Sorry I missed it earlier, but I hope the medicines work quickly for your dad. I also hope you got a nap. It must have been a bad night for sleeping. My neighbor's little guy kept her up all night.

Bethany -- Becky gave you some great suggestions. You could also do a tour of Fenway Park, if you're into that sort of thing (unless you are a Yankees fan...), and you should go into Harvard Square since you're in Cambridge. There is a great brew pub there called John Harvards. There is also another brew pub, Boston Beer Works, right across from Fenway Park that I like even better. If you're in the mood for great seafood, you can take the Red Line to Alewife, cross the street, and go to Summer Shack. It's really casual (casual does not equal inexpensive. It's reasonable, but it's not cheap), but the food is awesome. I second the visit to the North End...lots of good places to eat and lots of history. The Old North Church is there.

I can't wait to hear what you decide to do. I wish I could meet up with you, but you should see my calendar for that weekend.

Chinese or Indian ?

No contest...Indian!

I didn't get a chance to upload this earlier, but here is a picture from dinner last night. It is seared scallops on a bed of arugula with risotto cakes on the side. The risotto cakes had basil and lemon zest in them.

I have a few leftover. Maybe that will be my dinner tonight.

I'm starving! Dinner is at Becky's tonight! :lmao:

Robin- Congratulations on the new position!

Bethany- Waiting for Monday with you!

Maria- Are you still not feeling well? I keep saying you need rest but that does not seem to be the wonder cure here

Ellen- My DH farms and he is never happy with the weather. I think he would have a stroke if he lived in your neck of the woods ;)

Calves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I miss them! There are a few dairy farms that also have ice cream so we sometimes take a ride. We have to visit the cows and Buddy just stands there and smells them. Sounds silly but he loves the smell of hay, grain, corn.....and both of us could watch them graze forever. There is something so tranquil about cows grazing.

Aimee- stay safe down there!

Okay, dinner will be burgers. Really. I am not going to have them, I am trying to undo the damage that I have down this week so I will have salad and maybe eggs.

What? :confused3

You have cows for pets? Horses?

:rotfl2: Silly girl!! We live on a farm and raise cattle. It is calving season here on the plains.

Nancy, I totally agree. I love going out and looking at the cows also. And I would have to agree with Buddy I do love the smell. Doug calls it "the smell of money" :lmao:

Oh. I don't think I've ever been to a farm like that. :confused3

I have, however, seen cows before at the fair...and driving past farms on the highway. :upsidedow

I wouldn't think they'd have many of those farms in the Bronx anyway!

No....:lmao:. Although I think the name for the Bronx comes from the name of the guy who owned the land WAY back in the day. Jonas Bronks or something Dutch....at the time it WAS a farm! The Bronx started out as some sort of suburb....then turned into the picture of urban blight. :sad2:

There's a "farm museum" in Queens. We went there on a field trip. The kids can ride a pony in a circle, and see farm animals like cows, pigs, and sheep. There are also baby ducks and chickens they can touch. (poor things!) Also, they take the kids on this hayride thing in a circle. Oh, and they got to take home a pumpkin. :lmao:

(Don't you live in NY sometimes?)
