The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

No....:lmao:. Although I think the name for the Bronx comes from the name of the guy who owned the land WAY back in the day. Jonas Bronks or something Dutch....at the time it WAS a farm! The Bronx started out as some sort of suburb....then turned into the picture of urban blight. :sad2:

There's a "farm museum" in Queens. We went there on a field trip. The kids can ride a pony in a circle, and see farm animals like cows, pigs, and sheep. There are also baby ducks and chickens they can touch. (poor things!) Also, they take the kids on this hayride thing in a circle. Oh, and they got to take home a pumpkin. :lmao:

(Don't you live in NY sometimes?)

I work out of Middletown sometimes. I've just been stuck here in New Orleans on a project for the last 6 mos. I should be back up your way in May!

Cool...Maria and I have tossed around the idea of having a WFD meet at the Botanic Gardens in the Bronx some weekend in May (NOT the 9-10th!).

I may be down your way again in July onward. Depends on what kind of news I get on Monday. (Where is *crosses fingers and TRIES to wait patiently* smiley?)

Bethany Up the road from me they have one of those "Museums". They have the kid area since farming does pay well.

Ellen My stepmom came from a farming family up in Michigan. Her brother raises cattle. My son thinks it is not a real farm since there is no chickens :confused3.

Not sure about dinner tonight since we have errands to run.

I'm starving! Dinner is at Becky's tonight! :lmao:

You are reading my mind!

Not that any of you care, but my BFF (since 5th grade!) had her 3rd baby girl yesterday. Her oldest just turned three . Her hubby is half Hawaiian so they chose to name them all Hawaiian names - this one had no name until a few hours ago and she is Kalea. Gorgeous! Healthy 8 lb, 9.5 ounce baby girl. I'm a proud Auntie! :lovestruc

DH just came home from subbing at 4pm and asked when we could eat  I have him convinced we neeeeeeeeed Chili's.

Nancy, hopefully after my surgery Tuesday I will finally feel better.

Ellen, I would love to see photos of your ranch.

Dinner tonight was salmon, wild rice & string beans.

Aimee~ news of a new healthy baby is always a happy thing:cloud9:

Here are a few of the photos from the orchid show, the rest I put on FB in a new album:

Maria, you take some great photos. The colors are so vibrant. Thanks for sharing...I can't wait to see some color bloom around here.

Good luck Tuesday...I don't want to let that slip my memory by then.

Those are stunning!

The orchid show ended on Easter. :sad1: I might still go tomorrow because it's free (grounds only 10a-12n) and the weather is supposed to be the amazing.

I had a long reply done, and my computer mysteriously shut down. Grrr. We are having major problems with this laptop! I try to convince Alan that we need a new one, but so far, he thinks he can fix it.

Anyway, I hope you all had a great Easter. We did! It was fun to be with Dad, and to have some fun with my brother and his family.

I am sending a blanket of pixie dust and prayers to all of you. Sounds like you all could use some for one thing or another.

Dinner tonight is steamed artichokes. I'll probably also have to make something else for Leslie, since she's not fond of artichokes. I have some ravioli in the freezer, and that would round out the meal nicely.

Doug calls it "the smell of money" :lmao:

Lately we would be referring to these beauties as "hay burners" :lmao:Welby is the young lady whose baby I care for. She has a slew of animals at her Dad's farm down the road and her DH is usually called upon to pinch hit when she works late. Now she has decided that they are all pets....this includes the 4 Angus that are grazing :lmao:Her DH has put his foot down....he takes in hay, buys corn, feeds them and cleans them.....along with the chickens, llamas, goats and the mini donkey. He asked her if he should just get a third job to support her habit :rolleyes1:rolleyes1. We think it is funny.....Buddy went thru this every time one of his animals went to slaughter......Marisa still refuses to eat red meat....so we are sympathetic but geez Louise...they named them it's too late now :lmao::lmao:

I wouldn't think they'd have many of those farms in the Bronx anyway!
You need to come on our way....we still have a few family farms and they sure are pretty

.

Babies?????? You know this is news worthy on our thread! Congratulations Auntie!

Maria- I knew that you were having surgery but I blanked that out, I'm sorry. I want you better, I just keep moving the surgery out of the picture.

Dinner was burgers for kady, Buddy and Marisa. I had salad adn hard boiled eggs.

Maria- I forgot to say that I loved the orchids. I had a wonderful friend who raise orchids, they were gorgeous. You gave me a lovely memory of her that I appreciate :cloud9:

There's a "farm museum" in Queens.

This just struck me as so funny because of the live animals. Around here, we call that a petting zoo.

Not that any of you care

I care...I care very deeply. I am VERY concerned that your BFF may be crazy...three kids under three?? :scared1:  I am glad the baby is healthy and Kalea is a beautiful name.

ETA: Maria, the orchid pictures are beautiful.

Liam had his first baseball practice tonight. Spring is finally here! Of course, that also means my life is about to get even busier than usual. One day, we have activities scheduled from 8 am until 9:30 PM.

Well my husband didn't answer his phone, so I figured I'd tell you guys-- I got the job I applied for a few weeks ago!!! I'm really excited, it's at the place I work, just a different position and it starts in May instead of the end of June.

:woohoo:

Here are a few of the photos from the orchid show, the rest I put on FB in a new album

Very nice pictures. I love taking pictures of flowers.

Just got home from playing Bingo at my godsons school. It was Longaberger Basket bingo. My BFF's DM won one of the baskets that they had put in a pretty storage box along with a tea pot, sugar, creamer, cups and saucers and some tea and coffee. She loves tea pots so it was the perfect one for her to win.

My GS was pretending they called his name for one of the door prizes and his mother and I both told him to cut it out least they think one of us was the winner. The next name they called was his. :rotfl: He looked just like this  The prize he got was hair straightening shampoo and conditioner and a GC to a local salon. :lmao: He was so funny because he kept telling his mother she wasn't allowed to use his stuff and wanted to get his hair cut, even though he had it done two weeks ago.

:rotfl: Believe it or not, two were oops and they didn't seem to figure out how to stop another one!

Maria - love the orchids. I so wish I could successfully grow one of those things. What kind of camera do you have? It takes great pics.

Weather is beautiful here today. We are going to the zoo and then to Red Robin for dinner.

Hope everyone has a great day!

:flower3:Ann

Good Morning! Beautiful here too! Andrew has a game this afternoon...maybe they will win this one...they are 0 - 3...

then we have some errands before Tom leaves for Belgium...then going to dinner at one of our favorite Italian places.

Have a great day!

Maria I love orchids. Those are beautiful pictures. I hope you are feeling better today.

Llindsay I am glad you are feeling better. I hope Jan gets a break.

Aimee How do you have 2 oops?:confused3 1 I can understand. How young are they?

Rogue Congrats on the great job :dance3:

Glynis I love artichokes to bad I didn't see your post till today. I would have taken a car ride. My grandmother used to put the baby artichokes in her tomato sauce. Yummy

Well I had better get cleaned up so I can get dirty outside today. I have to clean up the winter from my yard and do a little planting.:thumbsup2

It is supposed to be 70 today I feel like I should be watching a baseball game instead.:thumbsup2

This just struck me as so funny because of the live animals. Around here, we call that a petting zoo.

It basically is a petting zoo...of farm animals. There's a petting zoo at the Central Park Zoo that also has farm animals. I think it's called the Children's Zoo or Petting Zoo...something more normal than "farm museum". :rotfl: In New Orleans at the zoo, the petting zoo is called the "Embraceable Zoo". :lmao: Guess you're supposed to HUG the animals at that one.

My friend wants me to help her choose an apartment. Really, they all look the same to me...especially since I've been looking at apartments for myself for the last few weeks! :upsidedow But the ones she's looking at.....they are SO CHEAP it's unreal! They are NICE and some of the one bedrooms are $380/month! A two bedroom is around $500. Who knew? :confused3

Aimee How do you have 2 oops?:confused3 1 I can understand. How young are they?

She is my age... but evidently missed health ed as she didn't really know how her body worked, I guess. I expect her to be pregnant again anytime now

We are having sausage and egg pie - from the latest CL, I think?

Maria, those are beautiful flowers! I love orchids. I wish they were not so expensive. I usually buy myself one a year, but if I couldf have my way my whole screenporch would be filled with them!

Lindsay, glad that you are feeling better.

Aimee, congrats to your friend!

Here is last night's dinner. I made summer rolls again--you guys have seen these before:
