The What's For Dinner Thread - Feb '09(recipe index in OP)

We loved Yak & Yeti. My sis and cousin had the steak and shrimp dish and both really loved it and that is saying something coming from my cousin, she is SUPER picky. I had the duck and it was really good too. We all had the wonton dessert. It's really good if you have a little ice cream, wonton and pineapple altogether.:cloud9:

FF was great too and I really have to say our waiter was the best. As I said DC is sooooo picky, won't eat anything "unusual", she was steaked out and wanted the pork but didn't like the sounds of what came with it. My sister tells the waiter and he had the chef give her roasted potatoes and green beans instead. And on top of that DC and sis wanted the bags they use for people to carry the leftovers even though we didn't have any and he went out of his way to make sure we got some.

Sis and I had the potato wrapped snapper which was to die for and the Key Lime dessert.

We're going to try Y&Y hopefully in Oct., thinking maybe doing just some appetizers for lunch.

That potato wrapped snapper is amazing.:worship: We've always had excellent service at FF too.:thumbsup2

Hi girls,
I was visiting with my parents most of the day and we just got in.
I won't be on much tonight, I am tired and I want to get DS to bed and watch American Idol.

WFD- Dm made steak with mushrooms, baked potatoes, acorn squash, and green beans.

I wish everyone well!
Ann

Nancy, More  for y'all! Is Kady doing okay?

She is actually better than I am. When she was 4 and in a Christian preschool one of the teachers lost her Mom. The kids were taught that Mrs C's Mom was in Heaven and that that was a good thing. She has held on to that so when my Mom passed she told us Memere was in Heaven...it was a good thing, why was everyone sad? Last night she was crying and sad but by the time I picked her up at school she told me that Trouble was a good cat and the Leader. He was old though and that meant he would die, just like her Memere was old and then she died. Now he was with Buster and that was a good thing. She has decided that there will be no leaders between Punkin and Sassy. They are friends. She is young and has so much faith and innocence, That is a good thing.

I'm not sure what other brand to recomend, but the one that Walmart sells is definately not it, I tried it and it would just fall apart when I tried to roll it.

I would not mess around with teh store brand on this one I think. Sounds like too good of an appetizer to try to save when I dd nto know it would work. I usually have no problems trying a store brand but inless I used teh one you recommended on this I would not chance it.

I went to the doctor on Monday, she had me go back in on Tuesday for blood tests. They had to take the blood from the back of my hand because it was not flowing out of my elbow. :confused3 Anyways, the things they were testing for were all negative, so yay! :goodvibes Apparently, it's just a virus. A really obnoxious one, but it should be on it's way out soon. This is day 13 of this, so it should be making it's exit any day now.... I am feeling noticeably better, so that is something. Still not 100%, but I should be soon. Especially since next week is a week off for me. :woohoo:

HOw are you feeling though? I'm glad the virus is almost run it's course but how are you?

Gretchen- that chicken was awesome! I doubled the sauce becasue I was not sure how much chicken I really had. It had a bit of a kick, I may have used too much pepper flakes but I would not change a thing. It was delicious! I should have had only one thigh and a small helping of potatoes but I went back for seconds. The curry and the spicy maple were wonderful together

Better...still tired, but less so. I still have an upset stomach, but it's not so bad that I can't eat. I think the stuff I'm taking for my sinuses is not gentle on it, because it was tearing it up earlier today, but then it settles back down. My face hurts from the sinuses, but I'm less dizzy and they don't hurt as bad as they did yesterday....I'm hopeful that this is on the way out. :upsidedow I feel more alert and aware too. Like the last couple of weeks I've really just been going through the motions, and I've been in like a brain fog.

Thanks for asking. :goodvibes

Try putting a warm compress on your face. That helps me when my sinuses are being a bother.

Nancy I like how Kady thinks

This made me smile.:goodvibes

Kathy- she makes me smile too. She has reduced things that are so complex to very simple terms. She is positive that that little lesson learned when sh was 4 is the best explanation and I want to agree with her :goodvibes What is that saying....From the mouths of babes.......

Gregg, That sounds good & not too difficult! We don't have a Safeway around here either. Do you think moistening the phyllo with a damp towel would help?

I don't know the brand from walmart was called Athens brand, it was just too cruchy for lack of a better term, it wouldn't roll, it just broke apart. You could use puff pastry as well, but I think that would get pretty expensive.

We're probably going back in October, we may do Deluxe dining so we're going to do all signature restaurants for dinner. Have to be honest, I'm really looking forward to dining at Universal!

I saw that. How about a 14 year old. He is a good vaccumer and he will make sure all your drawers and cabinets are closed. The child is obsessive about being neat all I can say is he is not like me or his father:rotfl:

There are 14 little ones in CA who are in need of some sane parents. :thumbsup2 :rotfl:

Truer words have never been spoken....

Kat I'm going to pretend that I didn't hear your Universal excitement.

Don't know if anyone saw these this morning but they sound pretty good:

The Honeysuckle Rouge
Michael Cecconi

INGREDIENTS

For spiced red wine and honey syrup
• 2 bottles inexpensive red wine
• 3 star anise pods
• 2 cardamom pods
• 2 bay leaves
• 2 cinnamon sticks
• 5 cloves
• Zest of 1 orange*
• Zest of 1 lime*
• Zest of 1 grapefruit*
• Zest of 1 lemon*
• Pinch of salt
• 2 cups honey
• 1 cup hot water

For the drink
• 2 ounces Anejo Tequila
• 2 ounces Spiced Red Wine and Honey Syrup
• 1/2 ounce lemon juice
• Thin round of lemon for garnish in cocktail

DIRECTIONS

For the Spiced Red Wine and Honey Syrup: Combine all the ingredients, except for the honey and hot water, in a large pot, bring to boil and reduce to roughly 1 pint (about 25 minutes at a hard boil). Pour through a fine strainer and set aside. Stir honey and water together until fully mixed. Combine one pint of the spiced red wine with one pint of the honey syrup. The spiced red wine and honey syrup will keep in a refrigerator for a week and freezes well, too.

*Save fruit for juicing or eating.

For the drink (serves 1): Combine tequila, spiced red wine and honey syrup, lemon juice, and ice in cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a chilled martini glass, then garnish with a thin slice of lemon.

Sparkling Sunset
Michael Cecconi

INGREDIENTS

For the pomegranate syrup
• 2 cups sugar
• 1/4 cup water
• 1 quart pomegranate juice*

For the drink
• 3/4 ounces pomegranate syrup
• 1 ounce fresh orange juice
• 1 ounce Plata (silver) tequila
• 2 ounces dry sparkling wine

DIRECTIONS

For the Pomegranate Syrup: Combine sugar and water in a medium-size pot over high heat, and boil until the syrup thickens and uniform bubbles appear on top (around 15 minutes; do not allow syrup to caramelize). Reduce the heat to low, and slowly, carefully add the pomegranate juice, stirring constantly. Turn off the heat, cool, and refrigerate. The Pomegranate Syrup will keep for a week and freezes well.

*Juice fruit like you would a grapefruit: Cut it in half and then use a countertop citrus juicer to extract the juice.

For the drink (serves 1): Pour pomegranate syrup into a flute. Combine tequila, orange juice and ice in a cocktail shaker, then shake. Using the back of a spoon, strain the liquid into the flute, on top of the pomegranate syrup. Top with the sparkling wine, then serve to guests with a small spoon and encourage them to stir the ingredients together.
