The What's For Dinner Thread - August '09(recipe index in OP)

Stephanie - I always thought I'd be a crier when my kids left me for school, but it never happened. They were always so excited, and happy to be going, and I was always happy to have them happy. When the twins left, and I had the house to myself, I threw myself a party! I soaked in a bubble bath for hours without anyone asking "Mom, whatcha doin?" It was lovely! If you do cry, that's ok, there will be other mom's crying as well. If you don't cry, that's ok too!

I got over the crying thing really fast! I used to go out to breakfast on the first day of school after that first year :thumbsup2 Everywhere was mobbed! I guess I was not the only one celebrating the First day Of School! :goodvibes

Glynis, when did you start Timothy on cereal?

I am curious because DM thinks I should start Emma soon so she does better at night. I think it is to early. Just curious, anyone else who has opinions please share...thanks.

I would ask the Dr. We used to give cereal early and thought that it helped babies sleep through the night. It is now frowned upon to give it too early, their little tummies do not digest it well.

Nancy, we leave tomorrow. Maybe I'll see Maria on the beach!

Have a great time! Safe Travels!

Sheryl - I'm feeling much better, thanks for asking! Unfortunately since I had to take off work yesterday, there's no way I can get out early tomorrow, but y'all have fun!!!!!

I am glad that you are feeling better. Vertigo is no joke!

Nancy I am going to make the frebreeze stuff. I use that stuff all the time.

I can look up the other "recipes" and then you pick which one you like. Get some rest!

Take your shower & have a nice glass of wine. You deserve it!

Sheryl- I am glad that you enjoyed Alexis recital. I have to tell you I think that child is born for the stage! Did she enjoy camp?

Gretchen- How is Miss Hailey today?

Dinner was good. I made Buddy pasta with butter, garlic and EVOO as his starch. He also had a big salad and steak. My one pot toss in all that stuff so it would be ready when I got home was really tasty! I sent some home wioth my neighbor to have for lunch tomorrow. She came with me to Marisa's for our weight management meeting and wants to try Simply Filling.

Making a Blue Cheese and bacon burger for dinner tonight. I saw these BC burgers at Wegmans, they just mixed the cheese in to the meat, so I am going to do the same. I may even add a little hot sauce to the meat to give it some kick. Then I'll fry up a little bacon to top them off and have it on some sort of roll, have to go to the store as I have no bread in the house.

When I make a blue cheese or other soft cheese burger, I stuff the burger with it. When it melts inside, it's like an incredible pocket of yummy goodness. Man, now I'm craving a bacon and blue cheese burger - thanks a lot!

Good news!!! :cool1: Thanks to our very own Janice, we are not going to stay at the Dolphin but instead stay in a Boardwalk villa!!!!! :cool1:

It's hot and sticky here so were having antipasto pasta salad for dinner.

That sounds so good. Do you have a recipe?

He has not been a very responsible dad to date, hopefully now he will help financially support his son which hasn't happened to date.

They do go through a lot of training, which emphasizes the importance of family. Unfortunately, they also tell the soldiers that their spouses are likely cheating on them while they are away. I found this a completely repulsive tactic.

Y I wish I had a better handle on the meal thing but sadly I don't.

I didn't mean to make you feel guilty. I just was wondering if you had meals planned before he moved.

Good Luck to Liam & the team!

Thanks, but he'll need it tomorrow. We drove all the way to the game, and after one inning thunderstorms rolled in, so it was canceled. We have to go back tomorrow.

Good news!!! :cool1: Thanks to our very own Janice, we are not going to stay at the Dolphin but instead stay in a Boardwalk villa!!!!! :cool1:

Awesome! :thumbsup2

Dinner ended up being pasta fresca. I will have to come up with something quick tomorrow now too.

That's what I usually do but on one trip to Wegman's I saw one that had it mixed in to the meat so decided to try it that way. This way there was little pockets all through the meat. :lovestruc And you are more then welcome. :thumbsup2

Just had to clean the vacuum cleaner out. :scared: The brush wasn't turning right and there was fuzz and hair all through the central core of the "tunnel" thing. I need a really long shower now.

Hey all! Sorry I cannot keep up lately. Mom was here and a handful...OK, but it's like having another child. I drove her back today and I am getting packed up to hit the road with T tomorrow to go to Williamsport.

On my way, I am meeting an old friend (we reconnected on Facebook) for breakfast. We worked at Anne Klein together and were partners (for back up, etc). Oh how I wish I had that wardrobe again!

Andrew's friend got really homesick and left camp. I have not heard from A but heard he is doing really well and having fun. I cannot wait to see him tomorrow. I will go see his game in the afternoon.

Dinner last night was pancakes, taylor ham and scrambled eggs. Tonight was Chinese take out while watching Gran Torino. We have been talking about watching it for months now.

Janice, Take it easy my friend and be careful dragging carpet around.

Vickie, Glad you're having a good week.

Becky, Have a great trip!

Oh, geez, Tom is on the phone next to me and I lost my train of thought.

So I will just wish everyone the best and send lots of :hug::hug::hug::hug:

I didn't start him on cereal until he was 4 months old. That's what our doctor recommended, and that's what we've done with all our other children. Our pediatrician told us that they don't start pushing for babies to sleep through the night until they are at least 6 months old.

I think Lauren mentioned that she started T on a couple of teaspoons of cereal in his bottle at 2 months. Check with her on that, though.

When in doubt, check with your pediatrician!

Yes, I did start rice cereal in the bottle at a little after 2 months. I started with 1 Tbs and after the first few times, went up to 2 TBS. You have to make a bigger hole in the nipple.

I did this with Andrew too...Most pediatricians advise against this but IMO it worked for Andrew so I tried it with Thomas and he was fine as well.

Thomas slept through the night immediately...I even put him in his crib awake now and within minutes is asleep, not even a peep. I am spoiled.

Just stopping in for now to tell Kat that Kyle will eat. Kathy- he is not going to eat the quality of food and meals that you can make for him but he will eat. Each child of mine that has flown out ate way differently than at home, they all loved coming home to eat and then appreciated the meals I gave them. I think that we as Mother's put more emphasis on complete meals than they do though. When Gail and I visited Kim she had us :scared1: at her meal choices. She really was happy eating lighter than we did, chose tacos from vendors when we wanted a real lunch, had soup or salad for dinner when we would try to coax her into having a full meal. So try not to worry about the boys, for a while food is going to be an afterthought. Worry about the laundry! actually.........Debbie gave up and started coming home for laundry :rotfl:

Hopefully this is clear:
To quote 1 post: hit the "quote" button on the bottom right of the post you want to quote. It will take you to the typical reply box, except that the text of the post you are quoting is already in the reply box. Make sure you keep the post information at the beginning and end that is in the [ ] part. You can delete information from the post that you aren't referring to (like I did with your post) as long as you keep the bracketed stuff.

To quote multiple posts: hit the "+" button on the bottom right of each post that you want to quote. The button will change color and turn to a "-". (If you change your mind about quoting it, hit that "-" button.) When you have the posts you want (side note: they will be in the reply box in order that you clicked on them), you need to hit the reply tab as you normally do. All the posts you have clicked + for will be in the text reply box. Again, you can remove sections you don't want to refer to from the quoted posts, just make sure you keep the post information inside the [ ]. To type your reply between quoted posts, just type between the "

THANK YOU THANK YOU Hopefully this works I've wanted to know this too.

Thanks Nan, I feel much better about that.

Not sure if I'm cooking tonight as the dizziness is back. If I can cook it will be spaghetti with a bolognese sauce.

Sorry I haven't been around. I have really tried to get my mind in the right place. Thanks so much for the kind words and Lauri (LBKB) you have no idea how your kindness was appreciated. Thanks everyone.

I am going to put it out there for you all to know. I would really appreciate some unbiased opinions here. Please be truthful!!

Matthew was up for a large - very much needed - scholarship here at the Church. There were 7 applications. The scholarship had very definate and high requirements. 2 applicants were dismissed very early in the process so that left 5. The committee looked over each and every applicant. The selectin meeting was on Sunday between services. We were on needles and pins all day. Now as a bit of back ground here >> I do work for our Church (8years) and the other Secretary is on the Scholarship committee. We are VERY good friends and Eleanor was having a bit of a problem with this. It was suggested that the voting be by secret ballot so no one would know who voted for who. We are a very small church so everyone knows each and every one of these kids<<<<< Ok Sunday comes and goes and no word so I was not feeling very good. I really thought that Eleanor would have called me. I get to work Monday morning and on my desk is the Scholarship folder with a young ladies application on top.
That is how I found out who won this scholarship! That in itself was a slap in my face I felt. Ok Matthew didn't get it, but what a way to find out. I called Eleanor at home (she doesn't work on Mondays) and said "I guess that Sarah got the scholarship" and she very flippiantly said "Yes, she did", I said "OK" and hung the phone up. Wow I was hurt!!
Now this is where I am having the worst time with this. This young lady nor her parents do ANYTHING for this church. No tithing, no service, no NOTHING. What is that all about?
Doug and I (and another applicants family (Alex) do so much. Doug and I have donated Laptops, TV's and we both do so much for this church, are active in Choirs, Sunday School, UMYF and the list goes on.
I would not feel this way if Alex had gotten it over Matthew - but Sarah. I just don't understand this at all. I really can't talk to anyone about this without looking like a winer and it wouldn't make any difference anyway. But I am having a really hard time. I know my feelings are not very Christian like and that is a big part of it but the other part of me thinks why should I do anything else for the Church. Sarah's application was not better than any of the other applicants - I just don't understand it.

Well there you have it. I am trying so hard to get my mind in a better place with this but I just can't.

Lauren-Don't feel sorry I can't keep up either.

Thanks Nan, I feel much better about that.

Kathy-I'm so sorry I missed that you are not feeling well. Take it easy:hug: Your so brave and such a good mom.

Thanks Bethany I finally figured out the multiple quote I am no good with computors you are a GREAT teacher.

WooHoo!!!! :cool1::dance3::yay: I've always wanted to stay in a villa at BW or BC!!!!!!!

Me too!! :woohoo:

That's what I usually do but on one trip to Wegman's I saw one that had it mixed in to the meat so decided to try it that way. This way there was little pockets all through the meat. :lovestruc And you are more then welcome. :thumbsup2

And the gooey goodness didn't melt on the grill with it mixed in? Sounds so tasty.

I am going to put it out there for you all to know. I would really appreciate some unbiased opinions here. Please be truthful!!

I would be very hurt and confused, too. Can you contact the chair of the committee to ask further questions about what the committee was looking for in a scholarship candidate? I would want to hear what went into their decision and if they were even considering involvement in the church or if it was based on something else.

I can't remember what we're having... it takes beef, capers, olives, and cilantro. That's all I got :confused3

Thanks Nan, I feel much better about that.

Not sure if I'm cooking tonight as the dizziness is back. If I can cook it will be spaghetti with a bolognese sauce.

 Feel better.

I was just reminded of a commercial I have been seeing, think it's Target, where a mom and son are shopping for college. The mom buys a fridge for food for energy and the son fills it with Red Bull and soda. ;)

I am going to put it out there for you all to know. I would really appreciate some unbiased opinions here. Please be truthful!!

Could it be her academic's are better then the two boys? Also have you thought about the possibility that all those things you have done are what kept him from getting it? They may be looking at Sarah's family thinking that she has much more of a need for help then the others.

As for your friend, talk to her about it. You never know, could be she tried to fight hard to get Matthew the scholarship and was given grief about it and took it out on you.

Ellen-. I have been thinking about your dilemma. I think I would want to know what the criteria was for making the decision. I also wonder if the fact that you do so much was detrimental to Mathew. The committee may have weighted Sarah heavier without even thinking about it. They may have been so worried about favoritism that the opposite occurred.

I wonder that your friend was uncomfortable with the whole thing and took the easy way out and then was flippant becasue she was uncomfortable. No matter what, I would be hurt.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of your opinions. I think it helped me just writing it all out. I do feel better and really there isn't anything I can do about it. I just felt that the way it all came down was a bit harsh. I will think about all you have said.

Aimee ~ you can be preachy anytime ! Our activities don't start her until the 2nd of September. Thank goodness!!

Kat ~ I am right there with you sweetie. Matthew moves out and into his Apartment on the 22nd. Oh how quiet my house will be again. Prayers are with you.

Becky ~ I know I am late but have a great time in Bermuda.

Steph ~ welcome home. Sorry your parent were a bit off but I am glad you got home ok.

Lauren ~ I am glad Mom is back home and you get to go get A tonight. Have fun.

Ann ~ shopping is good for the soul

Gretchen ~ that Blueberry French toast sounds great. I saved it. Thanks. Prayers to your Dad.

Prayers to all of the rest of you. I thank the good Lord everyday for each of you. I am so glad I finally clicked on the reply button so I could know you all. That was a great day!! Thanks so much for your friendship. It means the world to me.

WFDT ~ is kind of up in the air.

It is suppose to rain later today and if that happens no golf tonight for the boys.

If it is nice Doug will be on the golf course. If Matthew gets off in time he will join his Dad and I will be on my own for dinner.

If Matthew can't get off in time I am taking him to the Club for a nice big steak. As tomorrow he gets all 4 of his Wisdom teeth out and this will be his "last meal" for awhile.

So there you have it - I really don't know what will be for Dinner tonight.

I'll let you know what it turns out to be.

Thanks, I think you may be right. I really hadn't thought of it this way.

As far as Sarah needing it. That isn't it at all as her parents are huge cattle feeders in town. Very well to do. Her grades we not one bit better than Matthew's or Alex's either. Just so confusing.

Thanks for the lesson, but you may have created a monster if I did this right.

That sounds so good. Do you have a recipe?

QUOTE]
I don't really have a recipe, I just boil a pound of pasta, toss it with balsamic vinegrette (1 part balsamic, 1 part olive oil, dijon, salt, pepper, signifigant amout of garlic, dry oregano, blend) and add what you'd find on an antipasto platter- cheese, ham, pepporoni, proscuitto, pepporoncini, roasted pepper, artichoke hearts- whatever you feel like. I threw in some raw broccoli and green pepper because I knew the kiddo would eat it and we haven't been to good about veggies lately.

Not sure if I'm cooking tonight as the dizziness is back. If I can cook it will be spaghetti with a bolognese sauce.

I was going to make chicken parm tonight, but I thought it might be to hot for it and it's about 70 degrees here. I don't think I'd last to long down by you.

Grilled balsamic chicken, green beans and a starch for dinner. Have a great rest of the day everyone.
