I agree that Eugene can be a coward, but I also think that has been changing in the past few seasons, since he's been with Rick's group. Like when he took the bus a few episodes ago so the rest could get Maggie to the Hilltop, willfully sacrificing himself. I don't think he is at all going the Savior route, but rather is using his wit to break Negan's hold from the inside out, but is only going to commit when he knows it will be successful. (Last night he wouldn't give them the pill because he knew it wasn't a surefire plan). Him getting comfortable doesn't mean he's changed sides, because if you have to be there, why not enjoy a few pickles and/or gremblygrunks?
