The Vaccine Discussion Thread

Yes, they are mandated but there are exemptions. I would argue that none of these should be mandated for anyone.
And I would argue that to prevent the political double standard, they should be mandated exactly the same as other vaccines are (once fully approved and available for all ages) but with the same exemptions in place that other vaccines have. Why treat this one special, one way or the other?

Well that is socialized medicine for you

If this is a side effect of socialized medicine, why did similar issues occur in the US?

My FIL suffered life-long effects from polio, and now polio is almost eradicated from the world, so I am thankful this is mandated.

Well for one they have blanket immunity on these particular vaccines.

Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine is only 90% effective, required in all 50 states

DTaP is only 80-90% effective. Required in all 50 states

Even Polio is only 90% effective after 2 doses and required in...all 50 states

So yes, in my opinion Covid should and eventually will be just as required as these, with the same exception processes in place for people to opt out if they don't want their kids to get it. But to say that these other vaccines can be required, but Covid can't is just a perspective that I can't get behind. That is just politics.

Very curious to see how Disney ends up handling requirements. Think I read somewhere that they aren't requiring crew to have them yet...

Really? I'd be curious to see where that is reported. I have to think that the crew of the Magic must be vaccinated if the passengers will be required. I'm not sure they would require one ships crew and not another.

I would assume this is just until they can actually confirm sailings will continue. No sense in making it required if it keeps getting pushed back...

Science evolves, it’s never absolute. Let’s not compare vaccines with decades of data to one that went from trial to distribution in 6 months.
Covid-19 has come and gone in one year. Cases have been on the decline since Inauguration Day. We were told that everyone was going to die from spring breakers.

Everyone was going to die when Florida and Texas lifted mandates.

As a British person with a child who came down with chicken pox in Orlando I found this out the hard way! They looked at him like he was an alien, poor kid :-) Obviously we do not routinely vaccinate against it here, some even have chicken pox parties!

I know a crew member who has been contacted by DCL to let the CM know that all their vaccine paperwork is in order verifying that they have it. So pretty sure it's required.

You say let's not compare it to others, but that is exactly what you are doing as well when you compare how long it took to develop this vs other vaccines. a comparison.

My problem with this logic is it's arbitrary. Once the vaccine reached full FDA approval, and is available to all age groups, where is the logic in treating it differently than other fully FDA approved medications. It shouldn't matter how slow or long it took to develop. FDA approved is FDA approved. There never in the past has been a different and arbitrary secondary approval of vaccines that take into account how long they took to make. Who gets to determine what is or isn't a sufficient amount of time?

The only barometer we have is FDA approval. If you disagree with the FDA, well then you are staking a line in the sand and nothing will convince you otherwise. And you have every right to that opinion. But we should not be changing decades of policy around vaccine mandates due to the political nature of this situation.

The thing I am curious about is if it turns out that the vaccine has to be taken every year, will it still be mandated long term. Most of the vaccines that are required that have been mentioned in previous posts are not taken on a yearly basis. It's definitely still possible to require a vaccine that has to be taken every year, but im just curious as to how that might play out. We are already seeing boosters being created and rumors that there will be an option to take the covid/flu vaccine in one shot next year. IT will definitely be interesting to see how this plays out if the vaccine has to be taken yearly.

Yes, many here on this site have said that it shouldn't be a choice.

Well that is socialized medicine for you... :confused3

There is absolutely no data on this at all comparing those that have had COVID getting the vaccine having more immunity or better immunity than those who had COVID but do not get the vaccine. Not one real world study on this.

Actually no, it's not exactly socialized medicine but more a mix of public and private ...

And other than difficulties during historical pandemic, it is absolutely amazing and I wouldn't change it for any other system.

And there is data on this. I don't have time right now to provide links for you but it's outhere.

You wouldn’t change it for any other system because you don’t have a choice. The ability for our system to lay healthcare workers off during a pandemic is pretty awesome. All the major cities built field hospitals to accommodate thousands went unused.

I do have a choice: private health care is an available option for anyone here in Canada, who has complementary insurance and/or is willing to pay $. I'm free to pick between public and private for... Pretty much anything.

But let's go back to vaccines...
