The Updated and All-Inclusive Costume Thread

The “no full body costumes” change is unfortunate. rD told Ryan his beer cup costume would not be allowed under the new rules.
I saw that, and I feel like the intention of the rule is for like…race cars, and whole tables full of pasta, and inflatables (like Dinos) and that the answer he got was just one person’s literal reading of the rule. Because they also said that about a potato head costume. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m sure that’s the intent, but all it takes is one CM to turn you away at the race area for your day to go downhill fast.

To me it sounds like they are giving themselves a lot of leeway to turn away a problematic costume. But as we're already seeing, interpretation will be up to each individual CM and could vary dramatically. I have to wonder what costume(s) got complaints and resulted in this update.

I was wondering that also! Too many slinky dogs?? :confused3

I also wonder since runDisney just announced their new VP, did he come in and look at the policies and wonder why they hadn't been enforced lately? Most of the costume policy already existed but they've been rather lax with some regulations since COVID.

FYI the runDisney costume policy has been updated starting with Wine and Dine 2023 (but the change is not yet reflected on any other weekend's info page).

Yeah, lots of vagueness. Are they going to reject something handheld because it is inflatable? Prolly not. I'm with others in guessing that it is meant for things like inflatable Spaceship Earth costumes.
Drags the ground? There goes the Sea Witch and Belle costumes I saw.
Short capes? Wanda, Vision, and Elsa on Line 1.
Layers? Ambiguous, and I think an example of rD daying "We'll know it when we see it".
Don't want a bunch of linked-up runners? Yeah, I can see that. Not sure though how it has been affecting other runners.
I think that it what makes this so annoying: not knowing what is driving this decision. Is it solely because of a concern about weapons? Did they already have an incident or did someone just raise a flag of concern?
It probably won't affect any of my costume choices, but I still have questions.

I can say that I did go straight from the 5k or the 10K last year in my Mr I attire. I was hoping for a photo with Elastigirl since she wasn't out on the course when I went by. There was a special needs girl who thought she was seeing her favorite character and I did pose for a photo for her. I'll be darned if I was going to be the person to spoil the moment for her. Otherwise, I don't think I was in any danger of anyone mistaking me for the Disney Mr I. Maybe Bob Parr before he got back into shape...

Again, it would be interesting to know what spurred this.

And nothing is gonna stop people from taking pics of/with Jogging Jack

The new costume rule affects my 5k ideas for W&D, MW, and PW. Sigh. I think I can work around it but am worried that I’ll put effort into something that will get turned away or have to be thrown out.

I also think the hiding weapons rule is interesting because both of the costumes in the image they included on that email could hide something under the skirt…

The layering rule is also so vague to me. I need examples bc I don’t know what that means.

Some clarifications, but not completely clarified can be seen here:

From a former DIS member's email communication shared on Facebook.

And an old runDisney costume guidelines Youtube video that I think is still relevant to the re-reminding or updating of the rules as seen on the runDisney website:

I was thinking both those same things @Naomeri

Also I just noticed this wording in that clarification:
"...while full costumes are not permitted, you are welcome to dress in the spirit of your favorite character."

This makes me think Jogging Jack may be a target of enforcement or possibly one of the reasons behind this.

Guessing liability and injury risk, and they may have gotten some complaints. The first costume I thought of with regard to these rules was the guy running as the Pixar Lamp in April, spending an entire 10 miles with a lamp arm bouncing around as he ran through HS. Fun costume? Absolutely. A problem for other runners? 🤷‍♂️

I wondered if he angered some of the RD management this past year when he impromptu went on stage and "commandeered" the DJ's spot.

And like the girl who was a Tower of Terror luggage cart in 2022, that probably wasn’t easy to maneuver around in tight areas.

rD really needs to un-vague these rules some more. Are things like ponchos allowed, or are 1,000 Brunos going to be turned away at W&D?

Was confused about the stuff about capes but realized that it looks like they updated the policies page for W&D but NOT MW, which is the page I was looking at for this info. I don't think Springtime Surprise has been updated either.
