The Updated and All-Inclusive Costume Thread

Would you (not) run the full marathon with a Dottie skirt?

I've done half marathons before, but at least one of those HMs was not fun (constantly fishing the tulle out from between my legs)

I'm starting to think about my costumes for Dopey 2024 and this might influence what themes I do for each race...

I ran the half and the full in dotties in January. With a couple of modifications:

-I made myself *very* simple coordinating satin circle skirts that I wore underneath the tulle, AND I pinned through the satin layer of the dottie skirt, the tulle, AND the underskirt in the front center, just high enough that the top "sparkly" layer would cover it up. Kind of a PITA, but it definitely worked. (Can provide pics if you'd like.) This does make it even more poofy, but not rigid-poofy if that makes sense.

-You can also skip the underskirt and just pin the tulle using the same method.

-I found that wearing my skirt a little bit higher helped my thighs not eat the skirt.

-Some people wear a skort under their dottie (like a lululemon)

-Some people cut the tulle out of the front completely

-Depending on what size you wear, there's a lady that churns through quite a few skirts that she has made to a [shorter] custom length in XS. She posts often in the selling groups. You could probably also get it professionally shortened (or DIY if you have a serger and want to mess with satin.)

Tangentially, Enchanted Athletics Co makes skirts very similar to dotties (minus the bow) and some of them are offered without tulle. Because these are usually "pre-order" aka MTO, you could probably request no tulle. (Also, WAY less stressful to get one of these.)

Please note that I do NOT run for time.

I'm kind of in the same boat right now on decisions and I'm wavering between going "fancy" in a dottie or similar again for the full, or "bounding" in regular running clothes.

I don’t have experience running with a skirt except for my Winter one. I always prefer the most comfortable clothing for a Marathon. If it bothered you on a half, it will triple bother you on a full. Summer in Canada is a good test for Winter in Florida so I wish you fun with your experiments 😉

I wonder why I never thought of that. I could just cut out the tulle completely. I don't really need it for the skirt to look pretty.

A setup like this for Princess was fine for me, the skirt + leggings underneath:

Good to know, thanks. Because yes I'm no longer into that "Be there at 9pm on a Saturday night for the drop!!". I'm usually in bed by then :P
I had a look at their website and their skirts are really pretty! I wouldn't really need the bow.

yeah I run with 5in inseam bike shorts underneath and they're juuuuuust long enough to keep the tulle from bothering me. Plus a ton of body glide/2Toms.

I did one size bigger for the enchanted athletics skirts than what I wear for a dottie, and the fit was similar (M in Dotties, L in Enchanted.) I may have been able to squeeze into a M, but I didn't want to be stuck with another skirt that had to go on over my head. The length was pretty much the same too. She did some SUPER CUTE limited releases last fall, so if you're an insta person, make sure you follow her.

Speaking of Dotties (just when I thought I had myself talked out of them)

What if I took this skirt

and then put htv “gems” all over the white part (because I have a cricut now)

I can’t mentally picture if I would like it or not. Or how I would make it organized/not messy looking without doing like….rows.

Also, I have no idea what I would wear for a top to go with this.

I’m bad at conceptualizing.

I’m avoiding folding laundry, so I went on Etsy. This was a mistake.

Found this HTV of gems in a bunch of different scales.

Could I like….make my cricut cut out the gems from the white background? And just put those in that skirt? And then use the smaller scale of the same print and do something like a big run shirt from raw threads?

Or is that much vinyl on the front a bad idea?

Or are the gemstones too pastel for the colors of the skirt… 😩

Cindy Copley did a bunch of skirts like this for Dopey last year for the costume group. She did the gems in different sizes and attached them with velcro dots or pins so the skirt can be reused for other costumes. For the top, there was a variation of purple and green tanks with big buckle embellishments, also attached with velcro or pins. You definitely got the "Dopey" character from them, if you want to go more costume-y.

I don't think the bottom set is too pastel as long as there is something else pastel to tie it together (like the graphic on the top you pulled).

Not quite a running costume, although one could it attempt it if they were truly bold, but my daughter and I finished her Chip costume for the theater stage play of Beauty and the Beast.

I detailed the process in my journal if anyone might like to try and find some costume making tips from it (link).

Oh I'm glad we're talking about marathon weekend 2024 already! I have no idea what to wear, so I'm open to ideas. The 5k I'll let my son decide, but then that means I still need to pick something for the 10k, half, and full.

My daughter and I are going to be Marty and Mike Wazowski for the Disneyland 5k. She wanted the costume to be bigger and better than anything we've done prior. So she gave me the goal of creating a prop that included LED and sound effects. I chronicled the progress in my training journal of making a working laugh canister. Here's the mostly finished product. The only remaining outstanding question is whether to put any writing on the outside of our "Gathering Intact Giggles Instrument".

Mike and Marty Wazowski
-Concept Art
-Laugh Canister Part 1 - Construction
-Laugh Canister Part 2 - Lighting
-Laugh Canister Part 3 - Sound!
-Laugh Canister Part 4 - Foam construction Part 1!
-Laugh Canister Part 5 - Foam construction Part 2!!
-Laugh Canister Part 7 - Painting!
-Laugh Canister Part 8 - Soldering the sound board!
-Laugh Canister Part 9 - Realizing my error...
-Laugh Canister Part 10 - Wrapping it up!

At some point I'll need to create a video so you can hear the sound effects as well.

In honor of Canada Day, here's my costume for the marathon. I wanted a costume with two criteria: 1) Be comfortable and 2) Something to represent Turning Red since I'm Canadian.

And what would be more comfortable than Meilin's PJs?

I'll also wear a 4town temp tattoo somewhere, my cheek probably.

I ditched the idea of the Dottie or similar since I don't think I'll tolerate it for the full 5+ hours.

Eta: looking at the pic made me realize the visor panda has already lost an eye and it's my first time wearing it 🤦‍♀️

I’ve been brainstorming some ideas for the Princess 5k since I’ll be doing it with two of my cousins (who are sisters). We’re thinking Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather or Cinderella and her stepsisters. Both sets would be very fun.

My mom, aunt and I were three of Cinderella's mice for Princess a few years ago: Jacque, Perla and Gus Gus. We did a bit of a twist and made them Mouseketeers too, with blue skirts, black mouse ears, tails, big pin-on Mouseketeer buttons and tshirts with our character names on them. It was super easy and we got lots of comments!

I suppose it depends how well you all like each other 😄😄
We like each other a lot 😁. My cousins are doing the half and I suggested they could dress as the stepsisters. One loves the idea and one not so much. I said if Jessica couldn’t convince her younger sister into the idea we could spin it 👍🏻

I tend to pick comfort over fashion and absolutely cannot stand running in a skirt so I’m usually not on this particular costume thread very often. But when my preferred running shoes were on sale today and available in this amazing yellow, I could not pass up the chance to put together a Mickey or Minnie inspired look.

Now to find some red shorts that don’t ride up 😊
