The ULTIMATE Walmart haters site / thread.

I'm sorry, but how is this company different than most when it comes to salary employees? I mean, when you become a manageron salary pay, it does mean you work strange hours, work extra hours with no pay, miss out on family time, etc. My mother is not a store manager for Wal-Mart, but she is a dept manager who worked her way from PT cashier. Even as a cashier, she got wage increases that were more than I could have ever gotten working for comp businesses such as K-Mart, etc. As a Dept manager, she gets wonderful raises each year. She works mon-Fri during the day and has all weekends off. She gets holidays and sick days and incredible amount of vacation time. I don't know of many companies you could work for as a store manager and NOT be expected to move if they want you to. How many companies have insurance that is wonderful? Each year, benefits shrink with insurance. HMOs are becoming a pain in the rear. Don't even get me started with the military insurance! Don't get me started with the military PERIOD! Family time???? HAH! Your family was not issued to you while in bootcamp! Spend time with them when we tell you to spend time with them. All I am saying is your rant about Wal-Mart could fit the situation of most companies. Especially when you get into salary positions. Glad your husband found a job that fits your needs. My mother is quite happy with her job at Wal-Mart and I have to agree with her feelings. I have never had a job quite like that one.....pay, vacation, discounts, work hours, etc.

This was "our" experience with Wal-Mart. Your mom and other people may have better experiences but I am just stating what mine was and that is obviously what shapes my opinion just as your experience is what shapes yours or anyone else's opinion. Maybe there are some great Wal-Mart stores to work at but that hasn't been our experience with the stores around here.

I don't consider myself a "lover" or "hater" when it comes to Wal-Mart. However, I wouldn't exactly consider that site to be an objective place to read about Wal-mart. I'm surprised it doesn't contain things like:
A kitten dies every time you shop at Wal-Mart!

Let's be honest here, the UFCWI desparetely wants to tap into the paychecks of Wal-Mart employees for Union Dues. As Wal-Mart has increased their market share, the UFCWI has lost membership... and with it the dues they pour into the union. The UFCWI was one of the Unions that left the AFL-CIO recently in a huff over the issue of the agressiveness of trying to establish more union shops. They have visions of another labor "uprising" across the land.

My family has personal experience with this union. My wife worked at a local "hyper-mart" after we got married and she was finishing up college. The UFCW union took a nice bite out of her small check and the place still treated their people like what they accuse Wal-Mart of. For example, if she had to use the bathroom, she was required to clock out and the time in the toilet would be considered part of her daily 15 minute break. Wow, some union. We sat around one time back then and tried to figure out what advantage being in a union in that job got her in exchange for a smaller check... the answer was "zero". A word to Wal-Mart employees, "Be careful what you wish for..."

Oh, and I liked this one from the site:
And don’t forget the revelation last week about Wal-Mart and Republican Congressman and former Majority Leader of the U.S. House of Representatives Tom DeLay. Wal-Mart actually gave Tom Delay money 2 days after he was indicted. That’s right. Wal-Mart made a $5,000 contribution to support Tom Delay’s corruption 2 days after his indictment
Wow... They actually gave money to a guy that hasn't been convicted of any crime. Those low-lifes! They're right, who needs a trial!

It doesn't take a lot of investigation to find hundreds of sources which cite the violations including child labor law, safety, hiring illegal immigrant workers etc.

Just for the record the illegal aliens weren't hired by Wal-Mart. They were hired by cleaning contractors hired by Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart was fined for not policing the contractors' hiring practices. Wal-Mart cooperated with federal officials when the problems were uncovered and have agreed to put programs in place to prevent a re-occurance. Wal-Mart has over a million employees world-wide. Given the shear magnitude of the operations, 100% compliance of governmental regulations isn't likely even in a vigilant company.

I also find it interesting that some people think that the UFCWI will somehow be able to transform Wal-Mart and end all of these ills, real or imagined, if they are allowed inside. They couldn't even get my wife potty breaks! But the union views Wal-Mart as the lynch-pin in their new labor revolution. With visions of massive amounts of Wal-Mart employees' union dues in their war chest, along with dreams of Eugene Debs, the new cash will fuel the crusade. It isn't that they think Wal-Mart is that much worse than other retailers.... they are throwing everything they can at them because they are viewed as a means to an end.

I don't shop there because around here, the stores are always filthy, the shelves are never stocked with what I want to buy, and there's usually so much crappy merchandise laying around in the aisles that you can't get a shopping cart around them. Oh, and I'm just not a big fan of the quality of their merchandise. It looks cheap and ugly to me.

Oh, and on top of that, the employees are rude and nasty.

Give me Target any day!

ReneeA

Yes. ITA! Target also doesn't stop you at the door and demand you present a receipt for your bagged merchandise after you've just spent $200 in their store. At least Costco treats every customer fairly in asking for a receipt from everyone. At the few Walmarts I have been to, it is random, yet subjective

All I was trying to say was in your husband's situation, being salary in a higher up managerial position does change expectations of work........weekends, nights, holidays, extra work with no extra pay, missing out on family time, etc. I don't know of many companies you can work as a manager in a salary position where you get the perfect package. Yes, my mother did have a better experience BECAUSE she was hourly.
