The Ultimate Stomach Bug @ Disney Thread

I am sorry for all those who have gotten sick. I sure hope this passes in time for our trip in 3 weeks...

It seems that every time we went on a cruise there was a norovirus going around..but luckily (knock on wood) we never came down with anything.

We were at All Star Music....hit all the parks with small kids, including one who has to touch EVERYTHING. We washed hands lots and used lots of purell...no one has been sick (except the 18 month old who had an ear infection before we even arrived). We ate at buffets, fast food, sit downs, carts, etc.... no problems whatsoever (except from the 'maragrilla at rainforest cafe, but that is purely a 'tequila is evil' thing).

Really, people need to relax a bit about this whole virus thing. It is possible to pick it up no matter where you are - Disney or someplace else. Wash your hands carefully. Be sensible...and have fun! :thumbsup2

A family member had her face painted at Magic Kingdom recently and the next day she had shingles on her face in the same pattern as the face paint! Talk about pain!
Shingles has the same incubation period as chicken pox: 7-10 days.

We were there from the 18th-22 and did not get sick at all. We stayed at CSR, ate buffets & counter service and visited all 4 parks and did not have any problems. I think this whole thing is being exaggerated!

Sounds like your family member had an allergic reaction to the face paint. She should steer clear of such products in the future to prevent the reaction from happening again. If it is painful, she may need to be brought to a doctor for medication and to prevent scarring. I know there is a serious allergic reaction that people can get to dyed (black) henna - perhaps your family member got a similar type of reaction to the face paint, in which case she really needs to see a doctor ASAP.

Im sorry to hear that some of you got sick, but we were there Dec 14-21 and we never got sick, nor did we hear/see anyone else sick. We ate at buffets, sit down restaurants, counter service, you name it!

Good luck to all of you with trips planned in the near future. Just use common sense, and don't get all worried about the 'bug'. If you're gonna get sick, you could just as easily get sick at home.

Just got back today from a 7 day trip (Dec. 19-27).

Yes, two of us had the nastiest stomach bug ever while we were there. :( My mother got it about 4 days into the trip--missed two days in the parks. 48 hours later, I had it, and was sicker than I can remember being in a loooong time. Miserable. I missed our last day-- just moped in the hotel room.

We were so careful while we were there, too, after reading the threads about it here. Some things you just can't avoid!

correct - my DD is allergic to face paint and will break out in red burn like lesion the shape of the face paint. We avoid face paint at all costs... she once even broke out from mayonaisse being on her cheek! Yikes! that's sensitive skin.

We were there on 12/5 and I did get a stomach virus. Now, I don't know if I got it from there but if there was an outbreak, that would explain it!!

Stay healthy.

i GOT A HINT OF IT ON THE 6TH OF DEC. BUT I PRAYED ALOT AND SEEMED TO BE FINE BY THAT NIGHT IN TIME FOR MVMCP :santa:

The family member that caught the shingles went to her Doctor immediately and was diagnosed with shingles. She has had it for weeks now and the pain is just starting to ease a bit as this virus affects the nerves. This was no allergic reaction! She might not have broken out within 24 hours of the face painting, I don't remember the exact time frame, but the shingles pattern was exactly the same outline as the face painting. Coincidence??? Her Doctors are 99% sure it came from the brush used with the face painting. She has been talking with someone from Disney corporate and it has confirmed to her that the brushes do not get sterilized each time and have been reused.

As for the decision to change to a deluxe resort..... there is less people staying at those resorts, the housekeeping has more time to clean the rooms. I have stayed at most of the resorts at WDW. We go down there very often!
The deluxe resorts are ALWAYS cleaner then the value, and moderate resorts. It's just common sense.

Does it occur to you that less rooms also means less mousekeepers? It does not mean that a delux is any cleaner than a value. I have seen dirty deluxe rooms and super clean value rooms.
As for the shingles, not quite sure how you would get that from face paint brushes. Wouldn't the person who had shingles who got their face painted first have to have open, oozing sores? Why would anyone facepaint someone who has that on their face? Futhermore shingles is typically in older people, not your usual face paint customers.

REALLY just use commen sense.... *I am a fan of germs.... not saying I do not wash my hands or get my kids to....but I think everyone needs to be exposed to germs ...it makes us healthy...purrell and things like it makes the problem worse IMO..... I live in NJ and right now there is a stomach thing going around all over..... more because we are all stuck in the house with each other

There was illness going around here before we went to Disney, our kids had some mild issues (not throwing up, but the other end) while we are at Disney, but they never complained of feeling ill & they never threw up. I wasn't sure if it was a bug or from their poor, poor eating habits while we were there. The baby had it bad on our travel day home (went through 3 pairs of pants). Now that we have been home 4 days DH and I have a touch of it too.

We washed our hands more thoroughly than normal and I used purell (which I do not normally use at home). But I don't know why I bothered. The 19 mo old still puts everything in her mouth.

I don't blame Disney nor the airplane...it is just a fact of life. I am glad it didn't ruin our vacation and that the kids weren't really, really sick.

I heard that is where the virus is hitting the most in the deluxe resorts.

It actually seems to be all over WDW, which makes sense. People from various resorts go to the parks, some get exposed to the virus and bring it back to their respective resort. They get sick and then go back to the park, thus exposing more people who travel to a different resort and share the germs there. Also, people are traveling from home where they may have been exposed and bring it to WDW and visa versa.

Germs don't care how much you spent to stay at a certain resort, but rather will infect everyone equally.

ugh i dont know about any current stomach virus, but i did catch one at wdw a few trips back and it was a nightmare. i could not leave the hotel for an entire day, missing meal ressies and a whole day at the parks. take your vitamins!

I know, but those reporting here on the dis say the Yact club and Beach club are filled with sick people.
Also, you get shingles from the chicken pox virus.
My Mom got them after being exposed by my cousins, who caught the chicken pox on the the train up from Fla. to Pa.

HOnestly people.....it's all over EVERYWHERE!!! Not just Disney. The only reason it really bothers us is because we are missing out on some wonderful dreams and fun times while on vacation...however if it happened while you're at home what would you miss??? A day of work...darn. :lmao: Hopefully everyone here will be fine and just enjoy your vacations.

This is true. It's also especially annoying at Disney if you're staying in a room with only one bathroom. :scared:

While I hate being sick, the most annoying part for me was missing dinner at Ohana Thursday night and then our only day scheduled for the Studios, our last day. :(
