The Ultimate Stomach Bug @ Disney Thread

Actually Purell is a better product to use. It can kill 99.99% of all germs (bacteria and viruses). Your product is killing bacteria, and this stomach virus is not a bacteria.

Also, Purell is an alcohol based product that does not contribute to antimicrobial resistance like antibacterials do.

If it is Norovirus, which I have no proof of, even Purell is not completely effective against it.

Grab you some Purell, keep your hands off your face, wash frequently, and enjoy your trip!

Purell isn't better. It is alcohol-based (will dry out your hands and isn't recommended) and is just an anti-bacterial. It doesn't do a thing to Norovirus. And it only protects you from what is on your hands at the point of use, not anything later than that.

Safe4Hours doesn't contain alcohol - actually is a lotion and has moisturizers to help your skin - and is an anti-septic. Norovirus isn't specified as something it has been proven against, but lots of other viruses and such are, so it might help. And it protects you for four hours, not just only when you put it on. (You can put it on places other than your hands, too, if you want, to protect more than just your hands.)

I use Purell normally, but Safe4Hours is better and I'd much rather use it during an "outbreak" (give or take actuality) than just Purell.

I can't tell from the Safe 4 Hours website, but I am assuming that it contains Triclosan? If so, this is a very dangerous chemical - my government and yours, I believe has put restrictions on its use. It is a very serious chemical, and I would encourage people to research it before putting it on their skin. If Safe 4 Hours does not contain it, then what does it contain? I would never put any chemicals on my skin, nor my children's skins without knowing the ingredients first. Can you tell us what the ingredients are, please?

Washing those hands is always best as most medical grade lotions contain very harsh chemicals that are dangerous for us - that is why they last for 4 hours.:thumbsup2

Happy health to all, Tiger :)

It has 1% Triclosan in it, along with its inactive ingredients, but that is not why it lasts for four hours. It lasts because the lotion stays ON the skin for four hours due to the copolymer crystals (or whatever they're called) in it (similar to what's in those cooling wraps, from what I've read on it). It is safe for adults and children.

The lotion is non-occlusive, allows normal skin respiration/perspiration, and keeps noxious chemicals from being absorbed into the skin (i.e. pesticides and insecticides when gardening).

If you're one of those chemical-haters, sorry to tell ya, but you and your children (and pets) absorb chemicals each and every day even if you don't put anything on your skin/hair/body. You can't get away from it. Even your sofa might be "poisoning" your family.

Checked out this morning.

Felt fine when I went to bed last night.

Woke up this morning with all symptoms - to a tee.

The stomach pains are really bad.... I haven't found any relief for them.

....Not looking forward to the weekend, and concerned about my DH and the rest of our traveling party....

The overuse of Triclosan is contributing to bacterial resistance. Alcohol (Purell) does not have this effect. It is only going to make things worse for our children and their children down the road.

Thanks for the info. No sarcasm necessary though about chemicals as we have allergies/asthma over here with very sensitive skin, so we need to pay attention to these things, so we definitely hate chemicals. :thumbsup2

Thanks for the info - it sounds like a neat lotion, but I am not interested in any products with Triclosan in them at all, especially with young children. We religiously use non-toxic, organic/natural products over here without any fragrances, chemicals, etc. No name brand soaps, detergents, etc as they are all bad for us and the environment for that matter.

Tiger :)

We were in Disney from Jan 11-16th. No sickness just coldness!! It was the first January we ever experienced such cold weather. Oh well we still had fun and remained healthy. :cheer2:

I am completely with you, Tiger. Just because there are bad chemicals that we cannot control in our environment does not mean we shouldn't choose wisely and do our best not to add unnecessary, harsh chemicals. It's so nice that we have more natural choices now easily available. The more people get educated about this, the more we can reduce the presence of the bad chemicals.

With all of the illness running around, i just wanted to say one thing. If you do get sick, please, stay in your room and get better! If you traipse around the parks and your resort, you'll only infect more people. And I'm sure you don't want to do that.

On our last trip our DD11 got a 24 hour stomach bug. We took turns staying in the room with her. It was the best thing we could have done. She recovered quickly because she was resting and well cared for. And we got a break that we didn't know that we needed! Sure, at first we felt like, "We paid all this money to sit in a hotel room?!" but as I said, it was the right thing to do.

Stayed at the WL, ate at buffets, counter service, the only thing we got was a cold that my DH started with on the the 2nd to last day and so kindly shared with the rest of the family. The week we left my mother, father and niece came down with this virus. We stayed clear of them. And when we got back my other niece came down with it.

Stayed 1/18-1/22 at the beach club and 4 out of 5 of us got the virus. My son got it on the last day and the rest of us got it the next day when we got home.

While at the park, a little boy threw up right in front of us and another lady threw up while we were on the bus. :crazy2:

We just got back last night, we arrived on the 16th and I was sidelined Sunday the 18th with the stomach bug. Fortunately, I was the only one out of the 6 of us to get it. It was horrible. I can't remember the last time I was so sick, just happy that it only lasted a day.

Wow - sorry to hear so many have gotten sick! We were there 12/31 - 1/06 and didn't catch anything nor did we see any signs of anyone else being sick. Good luck to those going soon!

Sorry to hear so many people getting sick.

I think it is so much easier to "catch" when the weather is colder and more people have colds and viruses.
Hand washing is VITAL and if more people did it I really think it would cut down on the passing along of teh germs.

Hope all had a good visit despite the Yuck!

Just back Yesterday! Was there from Jan. 18-23! No stomach bugs here....thank goodness! I did read this thread prior to going....was a bit paranoid about getting sick...but am thankful I read it! Made me remember to use hand sanitizer more often that I would have!!

Although we don't have a stomach bug....DH had a sore throat for 2 days there...and I woke up today with tonsils the size of grapefruits, chills, fever, etc....

Oh....and what made me even more paranoid...was right when we got on Magical Express...they had 2 seats with plastic bags on them due to someone vomiting all over! The smell was outrageous....I can't believe they were still using the bus. All I kept thinking was those germs were still in the air and we were going to get it! But we didn't! Whew.....

I'm sorry, but that is just disgusting! You can't tell me that they don't have a few back up buses that they could bring out while one goes back to be cleaned. I would have refused to ride that one for sure!:crazy2: It would have been worth it to me to take a taxi instead, regardless of the cost. YUCK!

DH and I were there Nov 18-24. I got the stomach bug on the 23rd. It was horrid!!!! It was our Hollywood studios day :guilty: So back we go in May to make up for it!

Just back from the world. None of us (5) got sick nor did I see anyone that even looked ill. Touched rails, knobs, ... with no Purell. Yay we lived! I say go and don't stress

Just got back yesterday and no bugs (although we did manage to get the dreaded stomach bug just prior to leaving for our vacation). I only saw evidence of the stomach bug one time during our trip. I did see LOTS of people coughing/hacking, runny noses, ect.... during our stay.

I did read these posts before we went and became paranoid about getting sick during our vacation. I brought antibacterial hand wipes, purell, washed our hands prior to eating, wiped down the table and chairs, ect FOR THE FIRST DAY. Then I realized that I was taking some of the fun out of Disney and I stopped. We let the kids be kids and touch handrails, touch their faces, eat at buffets, ect... We washed our hands only after using the bathrooms and prior to eating. I think we had a better trip for it. Don't let fear of sickness ruin your vacation.

Not this year- but last Jan. 4 out of 7 of our family got sick- including me. Thankfully, we travel with all kinds of meds (been there/ done that with small children!). We had phenergan and suppositories for the kids and diarrhea medicine- this time, it all came in handy! Thankfully, we were sick mainly at night- I missed 1/2 day at MK and my mother missed 2 days in the parks. But dh and ds were only sick at night and better by morning. The maid at POFQ was wonderful!!! She brought all kinds of extras to try to help and really, really cleaned our rooms twice- I mean sanitized the places! Anyway, the maid said a lot of it had been going around then and they had had many many guests sick. That was last Jan. I'm just wondering if it is becoming more frequent since WDW is such a large place. We will take hand sanitizers when we go Thanksgiving!
