...scheduling one.

Why not make an appointment, today? If you feel you are too young, and also in between mammos, please remember to do BSE's.

An EXTREMELY important reminder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A daily reminder may save someone's life. Thank You

Dan, thanks for the reminder, but that is not the hardest part of a mammogram. Trust me I know ;)

LOL! Luckily I haven't had to have one-no problems I'm aware of and I'm not at the age where I need to have one. But I do the BSE's when I remember (I know, I know, I should do it every month, especially since my g'mother had BC, but I forget sometimes:o ).

Thanks for the reminder.

Also, you men should do BSE also (on their own chest;) ). Women aren't the only ones that get breast cancer.:( Men are often overlooked in these reminders.:(

This morning I heard on the radio that they think BSE isn't worth a hill of beans.

I am glad Lady M did her BSE's back in '97.

Study author Dr. David Thomas, a cancer researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, said women should not stop examining their breasts but should have realistic expectations about the value of the exams. He said self-examination should not be a substitute for mammography.

Other experts, however, said the study will not affect their continuing recommendation that women perform self-examinations between their regular routine breast screening tests.

SUPPORT FOR SELF-EXAMS

“It remains important for women to be familiar with their own anatomy, and certainly teaching signs and symptoms of cancer is of value,” said Dr. Benjamin Anderson, a breast surgeon and the clinical medical director of the Breast Care and Cancer Research Program at the University of Washington. “We will continue to recommend monthly self-examination as part of routine breast health care. We will not be abandoning that aspect.”
Anderson said many instances occur in which self-examination by women picked up cancers and “got the process (of treatment) started.”
Dr. Kimberly Van Zee, breast cancer surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, said the study did not determine self-examination to be of no value, but teaching the procedure as a broad public health measure may not be useful in countries where mammography and other breast cancer screening exams are not available.
“Among motivated women who do regular breast self-exam and are very proficient at doing it, it might make a difference, but this study did not test that,” Van Zee said.
“My approach is not to discourage a patient from doing breast self-exam,” she said. But she said a woman needs to be told it “is not the be-all and end-all. She needs to have other screening done on a regular basis.”

For SOME of us, it IS, Debbie! :) I had no discomfort from getting the mammogram, but when I get a script to GET one, it takes me MONTHS to make the call. There is just something about not wanting to know...stupid, I know. :(
But for ME making the call IS the hardest part.
And the second hardest ? Waiting for the results.

Thanks for the reminder and little push Dan. I missed last years Mammo and this year it picked up a lump. They biopsied it and it was benign. Even if it wasn't, it was so small my chances would have been very very good to beat it. I'll never skip a year again...

As far as the right age, Today on Oprah she interviewed several women with breast cancer all in their early thirties. I don't think 20 is too early to start BSEs.

I had one scheduled for next week, but had to reschedule it. The earliest date they could give me was New Year's Eve. Why bother advertising it in October if you can't get an appointment in October?

Deb, that's why I missed mine last year. I have to schedule now for next September! Since my Mom and Aunt died of Breast cancer I decided I wanted the best to monitor me. They have the longest wait time of any medical office I've ever seen. The good part is, once you're there you don't leave until they know exactly what's going on. Everything was done in one visit. Even though I was there 6 hours, at least there was no endless waiting at home.

yikes, I'm going to ask my doc for one next week....do they really have that long of a wait?? my out take on this is....SBE's are not a waste....maybe a couple of minutes of my time, that's ok!

Beth, you describe my Mom exactly!

Now, I turn 40 this month and, well..... I haven't even seen ANY doctor in about 2+ years. :(

I know, it's time to maybe think more mature. :(

Thanks Dan, always great reminders! :)

Something I have not saw on the CB is that you should try and have your MAMM done at the same place every year also. The Rad. can look at your last ones to see if there are small changes to breast tissue. I could help detect it even earlier becasue cancer is around years before it is large enough to detect.
Get a friend to call and remind you at a certain time of the month
to do your BSE to and you call her the next time. My aunt and I do this. We make a joke out of it ,so its fun. Also I am seeing younger and younger pts. with Breast CA. I had a woman 23 yrs old with Breast CA. and thats not the first I have saw young.
O.k. I will get of this soapbox. sorry I got long winded but I see sooooo many No, to many people getting this CA. and it makes me mad.
