The ~Totally Unofficial~ 2008 Half and Full Marathon Thread

Bree, congratulations! I know how hard it is to feel so slow and easily tired after giving birth - I keep trying to take each day slowly and focus on what can I do to get my body back to being healthy and strong.

NCRedding - when I feel that way, I make a plan - what thing can I do *today* that makes it more likely I can do better tomorrow? Set out my clothing? Plan my meals? Throw out that Christmas candy that only I am eating?

Hockychic - I am just getting into the swing of public school and the attendance rules, so it didn't even occur to me that it was going to create a conflict. Especially since I'm taking my DD out of school for the MNSSHP. Oooops.

I'm on my way to sign up for the gym again (my membership has been on a maternity "hold") - it got really cold here and I don't want that to be a reason for me not to get my exercise in.

Have a great day everyone! :cool1:

Sorry if this has been posted yet (haven't had a chance to read through all the posts), but does anyone know if there is a schedule for which park/which times they run through?
Thanks!

I'm not sure if the schedule has been posted yet. You can call the marathon organizers - I don't have the number on me, I think I found via allears.net

Which run are you doing?

Good morning all. Wow busy week. Been doing just OK eatting has gotten off track but I am resigned to the fact that until Jan 1st when all the parties are over I just don't have the willpower to do it.

Hope you are all doing great.

Kim

Who else is participating in the full in 2008? I don't know if I can do a full marathon...I've done a couple halfs, which were hard enough, but 26.2 miles???? I don't know.

MOnica - Week 1 of teh full is 30 min SRs and 5 mile LR. If you keep doing 30 min 2 x's a week and 3 to 5 for the LR, you would eb fine come time for the full. Thrhow in a couple 6 or 7 milers and you would be golden. See what Cam, Heather adn Krista say after the full this year.

Thanks Carrie, I am just afraid of going and not finishing. Loved your marathon report, awesome pictures! :thumbsup2

monte - Thanks! I don't recommend this, but we went from zero to marathon in 9 months. SO, from half to full in a year is totally doable.

Monica -- I am going from half to half to full within a year and am counting on Marathoning for Mortals to get me there. I have not been as disciplined as I should be in getting in the mid-week SRs and cross-training. I am really hoping to get better about that over the next couple of weeks. I think you are starting well enough in advance that you are going to do great! :thumbsup2

Bree -- I checked the tricharlotte website for more recent pictures of Lucas, but sadly, I was disappointed. Give him hugs and kisses from all the WISHers. Can't wait to meet him in 2008!

fabumouse - -congrats on getting back to the gym! :cool1:

Thank you! It felt really good to go back - there were a lot of people I recognized (and who asked about the baby) so I felt like I was among friends. While I was gone they replaced the old stairmasters with ones that are real steps - it took a bit of getting used to, but seems like a good work out.

Would you recommend Marthoning for Mortals for preparing for the half marathon as well?

Absolutely, he has plans for full marathons, and for half marathons. His plans also distinguish whether you are a runner, or a run/walker. MFM is very motivating. He endorses that your goal is to prepare for the Starting Line. If you've followed the path to get to the Starting Line, the journey to the Finish Line will take care of itself. I read this book to start out my training for the half based on the recommendation from Carrie, and it's a great first step.

It really is great to read that so many of you have picked a target for 2008 already. That , in itself, is motivating. :yay: Keep up the good work!

Absolutely. I followed his "walk the half" plan to prepare for the WDW 2006 half and the inaugural DL half in September. I also met him at both events and thanked him for his awesome plans.

I think you will find that those plans are very user friendly and effective. :thumbsup2

I'm using the MfM book now for the half in January. I just started training for the training in August. I don't recommend starting that late, though.

If all goes well for this half, I might try the full in January '08. :scared:

Thanks for the MfM recommendation - I ordered it yesterday (I'm an Amazon junkie). I don't think we'll ever try for the full - DH could run it, but he really struggles with his knees. At some point (probably after everyone on the weekly thread has run in January) I'm going to see if I can get some suggestions.

:sunny:

zoegirl: congrats on the new addition to the family. Hope the doctor releases you soon.

As for my training, and my plan: It has fallen by the wayside. I am completely unmotivated, and feel like a big, fat lazy slob. I have a tendency to ignore these threads when things aren't going well, so hopefully, the fact that I am posting now will get me back on track--or at least somewhere in the vicinity of the track!

WTG all of you who are working your plan.

I'm not sure if you have gotten back into it or not as I'm still reading thru but keep in touch even when your feeling like a slug. I had a doctor appt back in October right after finishing DL's Half and my dear Doc brought up how I had put on 10 lbs from Jun'05 to Jun'06 even though in recent visits had been losing a pound or two. I went home and was bummed. It really smarted and at that point I started to 'hide' from the group. What my Doc didn't notice nor had any reason to was that my legs are much more defined than a year ago. That I am now able to do a 10 mile walk without being in pain for the rest of the weekend. That as of that visit had completed 2 Half Marathons and managed to even finish in a few minutes faser (dang those inclines! LOL) AND even importantly finished with NO PAIN. I felt great and could have done it all over again the next day.

Had I not gone into hiding from the group THEY would have told me that but instead I listened to that voice in my head. Thankfully I did continue to do my miles though.

So please KEEP IN TOUCH!!!! I only did 6 miles this weekend (course it's freezing!) but I know no one is going to point and laugh. Life happens but we just have to take the next day and get back onboard.

Happy training for 2008!!!! Can't wait to see ya there!!! Like the others have said, it's in the back of our minds but getting thru the next few weeks is upfront. Though Susan (my racing/training buddy) and are already working on a training plan to start Jan 13th, 2007 for the Goofy in 2008 LOL The focus will switch shortly and you'll see us start to talk of the Minnie and then the Race for the Taste (which I'm actually talking Susan & our DHs into!!!)

Be sure to join in the main group weekly thread. For DL the whole group didn't do it but those that didn't were unbelievably supportive. They were there in spirit with us. And the same went for those of us not able to do the 2006 Minnie and Race for the Taste. Those of us stuck at home for those 2 races were on the edge of our seats waiting to hear how they went. And even non-Disney, I remember the Rock 'n Rock Half Marathon in VA Beach that I couldn't wait for the lady doing it to get home and post her report. You'll find thru the main threads talk of other races that might appeal to you and maybe you'll want to do in 2007 as you train for Disney 2008. So please join in they're a great bunch :grouphug:

And there you have my novel of the day ;)

Happy training!!!!!

Hey everyone how is it going.

SO excited for those doing the marathon in 2007!!!

I am a little off training this week just so much going on with Xmas but getting geared up for Jan 1st.

Kim

I've only been lurking around this thread, but I'm glad to see others using the Marathoning for Mortals book.

I have recently ended a 2 year extended experience as a couch potato and hope to reclaim some of my youthful vigor by setting my sights on the 2008 Disney Half Marathon.

I just read through this thread and it is so exciting to see so many getting geared up for 2008 :cool1:

I have been with the WISH Team since 2006 where I registered for the 1/2 and was unable to go do to an injury. I have been nursing that same injury for quite some time and will be unable to go again this year.

Somehow some way I want to be part of 2008. I love the support and motivation that everyone on the Walk/Run group provides.

I can't wait to read all the reports of those able to walk/run 2007 and to meet those of you getting ready for 2008!

It is going to be an awesome year :cheer2:
