The ~Totally Unofficial~ 2008 Half and Full Marathon Thread

I just thought this was a thread for people wanting to do the half or full in 2008, but not doing anything in 2007, so it would be kinda pointless for us to post on your training threads. I don't think there was an intent to splinter any group, was there??

No. I didn't realize there *was* a group to splinter. :confused3

The weekly group is way beyond my training level. I was just hoping for a thread that was at the beginning stages of training for the 2008.

Anyhow . . .. no run today but I did wash my smelly running gear. :thumbsup2

Did everyone get moving today?

Actually, it's called a "club" as there are regular participants who can't do the 07 marathon and we did not want anyone to feel left out. We hope to keep it going so that we all continue to keep each other accoutnable, as well as helping encourage first timers. It's there as a resource for everyone, not just those who can join us in 07. :grouphug:

I can't speak for everyone, but suddenly seeing an "official" thread did seem to apply that the other was "unofficial." Hence the reason several have gone out of their way to invite everyone to the training threads. You'll have truly amazing resources to glean info from and those that have done the marathon before get new insight by hearing people at the beginning of training again. It's just a great combination. I'd hate for others not to have the same wealth of knowledge to dip from. :grouphug:

I spend a lot of time on the CB. I've come to enjoy the word "Official". :teeth:

But really, I was just trying to have a narrower thread for a single race. I asked first (twice) and it seemed like there was no thread for the 2008 marathon.

The weekly thread is great, and there are clearly a lot of experienced runners there but right now the focus seems to be on the 2007 race, with runners who have known each other and supported each other all year and probably longer.

And who knows - maybe I'll just end up talking to myself all year. That's okay - with a five year old in the house I feel like that's what I spend most of my time doing anyhow.

I didn't start this thread. I joined it because I am interested in doing the 2008 half, and I have posted on the other training threads, but felt as though my level of training was no where near any one else who was posting. I am not sure what is going on here, but I feel as though I have done something to annoy or anger some others, and I am totally clueless as to what that may have been. :confused3

Maybe I am just having a bad day, and tomorrow everything will be perfectly clear.

Funny, you were one that I looked up to because you were on teh 06 team. You've done nothing wrong. I just wanted to let anyone here know that all are welcome.

We all started as beginners. Many were first-timers in January. You have more experience already than some on that thread. Some have done more, some will go in 07. Some started in 07, have been side tracked adn some just can't make 07. Just wanted to let you know all were welcome. I didn't know anyone on that thread 2 years ago. MAny of us are the same way or have been there less.

After the 07 marathon, many of us will sign up for 08. Like I said, though. We keep it vague so we don't exclude anyone. If it's not for you, that your decision.

I'll leave you alone now. Didn't mean to step on any toes or make anyone feel bad, but wanted to make the goal of the training threads clear.

This is not the CB. The culture here is really quite different and what works on the CB won't necessarily be seen the same on this board.

Actually, I think several people did mention to you that the folks on the training thread include those who are training for 2008. But I think you made a good point. On first glance, the way the opening to the training thread was worded really emphasized 2007. I've changed that so that we don't seem exclusive to any one year's race and hopefully, our purpose is a bit less confusing and more welcoming to everyone.

As NCRedding mentioned, the WISH team formed for 2005 and has continued on since then. There's no 'official' 2008 thread because the team will just refocus on 2008 after 2007 is over. And there will be folks that participate in other races throughout the year in preparation for 2008...the Minnie, DL Half, and local stuff.

fabumouse, NCRedd...please don't feel like the folks on the thread are too experienced. Most of us started in a similar place to where you are. I still feel (a bit) intimidated by some of my teammates because I'm new to running. I joined in January 2005 and had never run a step in my life!

Before the 2006 races, some of us newbies were considering starting a walkers thread because we didn't feel like we were up to the other folks that were training. I think it was Lily that convinced us to stay with the main team for everything we could learn and the support we all would get from it.

Nah...we're a pretty chatty bunch :) If you still feel more comfortable continuing on separately, just keep in mind you're always welcome on the team threads. But I would respectfully request that you do change the name of your thread so as to avoid confusion for new folks from the word 'official'.

Good Morning all.....what a great day yesterday for my workouts.

Ate great all day.....well 2 jubey jubes...but hey it is Christmas. Didn't cave and have the desserts in the lunch room. Went for a 25 min walk at lunch, DS and I did a weight program and then went for another 32 min walk last night. Our weather is great in Ontario right now so totally taking advantage of it.

How did you all do?

I guess I missed this entire discussion last night...my home computer is fighting a virus right now.....lol

I want to join the entire Disgroup. :grouphug: I have been invited over to your thread which I will do but with you all so close to your race I didin't want to bother you all with my newbie questions I am sure you are all down to the nitty gritty in your training and like I said didn't want to bother you all during that time.

I will pop over and try and catch up on your thread.

Kim

Kim - We love to give advice. :teeth: And, we firmly believe that there is no such thing as a dumb question!!!!

Hello to everyone!

You might consider keeping this thread for the specifics of the 2008 event, but as you train please consider the weekly thread.

The weekly walker/runner thread is a wealth of information. We are not all speedy. I'm a back of the packer still! Although I must take a moment to boast that I am improving and I am amazed that I am doing this.

Please don't be intimidated by any of the goings on with the weekly thread. Come on over and jump in. Everyone is welcome and we do need each other as we go through this. We were all beginners and really appreciate everything everyone is going to face.

It makes it easier to help if we don't have to jump threads. As you get to know the group, you too will laugh and cry with us as our accomplishments change. Training with the group WILL make your event experience one very memorable time. The training is like riding a roller coaster and we all share the ride. Come on over please! We need you.

:cheer2:

HI

I am one of those that probably intimidates beginners on the weekly thread. But I have three small children and I was a beginner myself just a short while ago. Getting my runs in takes tremendous effort before I even get out the door.
Personally, I think you guys should hang out here until after the 2007 race. Why? two reasons:

1) Right now, the weekly thread seems to be loaded with injuries and tremendously long runs so that could be discouraging.

2) The pre-race excitement is building and if you aren't going to be there it might be depressing.

We want you to be part of the team next year. We are excited that you are here. You are way ahead of the wave by setting your goals now - it gives you a lot of room to build up slowly so you won't be one of the "walking wounded" next year. Anything that helps you get the steps in is okay with me!

Well put, Lily.

I am the person who considered breaking off the weekly training thread last year to start one just for walkers/beginners and I am so glad I was encouraged to join the weekly training thread, instead.

I have learned so much there and received more support than I ever could have anticipated. AND I have asked more than my share (and that of about 10 other people) of what I thought were stupid questions. And yet, it turned out NO ONE thought any of my questions was stupid and I've never asked one that wasn't answered very quickly and knowledgeably. Every day, I appreciate the support of the entire WISH team. We all bring something to the table.

I for one am so glad you didn't start a new thread (thanks, Lily for that advice)! I have a hard time checking more than one thread, so I often miss things going on outside of the weekly thread. I would hardly know you, Cam, if you were on another thread :scared1: Plus, I absolutely love the unique mix we've got of walkers/runners, newbies and vets. I've checked out several different running message boards and there is absolutely nothing else out there on the web that compares to the WISH team :grouphug:

I agree, there's no such thing as being too new, or asking to dumb a question.

Sunny

Good Morning all.

Just checking in. Stinks not having my home computer working so much to catch up on when I get to work.... :surfweb:

Had a another good walk last night, felt good. Ate great only down fall was I had 2 cans of pepsi. I am trying to get off the stuff...my only addiction but sometimes by habit I just grab one and have drank 1/2 before I realize what I am doing.

I know it is super early but has anyone given any thought to where they will stay? We will stay at one of the values...not sure yet which, the only one we haven't stayed at is Music so it might be there.

Well off to work, one of the girls brought in pecan tarts and it will be hard to pass these up, they are soooo good.

Have a great day all.

Kim

Hey Kim! I got my slog in today - 1 lap more than I did yesterday. That felt good (baby steps, baby steps).

I am going to stay at the Polynesian because it's on the monorail, and I've heard that it's easier to get to Marathon that way (and the girls will love the birds and waterfalls if they still have them). But I've also heard that the busses are very organized (guess they would have to be!), so it may just be a matter of 20 minutes of extra sleep. :)

Everyone I know loves Pop Century for values. I think we'll stay there our next trip.

And I'm a Diet Pepsi addict. I had to cut wayyy down once I made the connection between not being able to sleep at night and my heavy caffeine consumption. :teeth:

Congrats on your slog yesterday. I am still just walking. But last night did a 45 min quick paced walk and felt great.

OK, now you have a new 2008 race thingy....I gotta figure out how to do this.

I didn't eat so well yesterday but not too bad. Also took my measurements this morning to see if I lose inches as well as weight.

Have a great day.

Kim

No problem! Glad it worked!!!!

I'm glad it worked, too! I try to explain how to do this and somehow, I'm always missing a step.

Arkmom made the art for us. But I don't think she's willing to train. :teeth: I keep working on her, though.

I didn't have a babysitter today, but I did force the 5 year old to take a good walk with me and the baby after school.

Right after I gave birth, that walk was fairly tiring for me, and today it was lovely, so I feel that I'm gaining some of my stamina back.
