The things you see at Wal Mart

I wonder if it depends on regional management?
-----------------------

Based on the kinds of bashings that go on here, I would definitely say regional management has a LOT to do with it.. My DH (in the supermarket business)had to go around and whip stores into shape and was able to do such a good job of it he actually received rewards from the "higher ups".. One of them was a diamond ring for me!! :flower: )

Poor management can create havoc in ANY store - not just Walmart.. The store is only as good as the people who are running it on a day-to-day basis.. Keep it nice and you will increase the number of people who take pride in how they dress and behave inside the stores.. :flower:

I don't think management really has anything to do with the type of people that shop there. Unfortunately this Walmart is on the bus line with a link directly to the city. This Walmart tends to be messy but it is nothing compared to the people it brings in.

Which goes back to what I said.. If these stores are located in a bad area, then the larger number of shoppers will be from that same bad area.. Still - I don't believe that "all" poor people are bad and/or sloppy.. They're just more noticeable when people go out of their way to notice..

Cindy - there are no Walmarts in the city of Chicago - where are you going to shop?

For the record, I do not go to Walmart unless I have no choice.

It makes me depressed. Poor people in the richest nation in the world. I feel ashamed that people have to shop there.

I'm visiting the states at xmas and am looking forward to visiting Walmart, i know u guys might think thats weird, but compared to England, the prices are alot better...whether its ipods, makeup etc! Wish we had those prices over here.

I just can't imagine what kind of areas that these poeple live in that run into the experiences that they claim here.. I don't think I have EVER been in a Walmart that is described like the ones I've seen on the Walmart bashing threads - and believe me, I have been to MANY in numerous states..

Well the head lice incident took place at the Wal-Mart on Route 1 in North Brunswick, NJ, Middlesex County. Midlessex County is listed as one of the most expensive places to live in the US. North Brunswick is primarily upper middle to upper income. Median household income during the last census was $66,000+, that number was expected to rise steadily. Per Capita income was in the mid $30,000 range. It's hard to find a single family home for under $400,000, townhouses generally run $275,000-500,000. We are not talking impoverished areas.

This store does seem to attract people from other areas that are not as wealthy, but I do'nt think that has a lot of bearing either. In this store I think the problem is pure and simple with management (thus the INS raid) who just have lost control.

"It makes me depressed. Poor people in the richest nation in the world. I feel ashamed that people have to shop there."---i agree about the poor people in the richest nation in the world!!

I usually get depressed when I go there. We have a Super Walmart and a regular Walmart. The Super one has less of the trashy people there. (when I say trashy-I mean screaming swear words at your 2 yr old son who is only wearing a diaper in a store) I'm sorry if it makes people mad, but it is so true that you don't usually see those type of people at Target! I feel so bad for those little kids- flame away

I was at the Wal Mart in Pensacola, and it is a very nice and clean one, and I was returning something. A woman came by pushing a bicycle, she had on what I would call a cocktail dress, and knee high boots, then she turned and to say the cleveage was low cut would be an understatement. I'm sorry I just stared at her, I mean it was 10:30 in the morning. Later I thought maybe she was a lady of the evening. It was just the strangest thing to see.

I don't think that Wal Mart has any stranger people than other stores. I lived in Greenville, NC and the Wal Mart there was just not well run, and I don't think the people who shopped there were any different from the ones who shopped at Target. But when I lived there I went to Target most of the time, until they built a new Wal Mart in the next town, about a 20 minute drive.

As a smoker 1st and a mother second, I am proud to say that when my children were 2, I was able to put my cigarette down long enough to dress them, lucky for them that I never really grasped the concept of talking with a cigarette in my mouth so I really didn't have much opportunity to cuss at them too much because I'd rather smoke than talk to them. :rotfl2:

No flames here. I worked at a Target that was about 1/4 mile down the street from Wal-Mart. Not the same clientel AT ALL. And it wasn't a case of just noticing it at Wal-Mart more. I was 18 at the time and not at all political or aware of the "Great Wal-Mart Debate" so this was a neutral observation. I worked as a cashier, so if you shoped at Target I saw you. And I did not see un-kept people at Target. If lower income people shoped at my Target (and I'm sure there were!) you couldn't tell by their outward apperance.

Now, I'm not saying that only poor people shop at Wal-Mart, or that poor people are inferior or any of that junk. You shop were you have to shop to get by, and Wal-Mart is generally less expensive than Target. I did see perfectly nice people at the Wal-Mart (including myself). But there were other people that shopped at Wal-Mart that I did not see at Target.

CindysMom: I removed the cigarette comment because I didn't want to offend anybody--what I meant was they were buying cigarettes INSTEAD of things they need for the kids. I know incredibly judgemental. Your post made me laugh though!

No problem - I'd get ticked off too if I saw people buying cigarettes instead on essentials.

We have 2 Walmarts here about 5 miles apart. One I won't set foot in as it's filthy and filled with filthy people. The other is ok. A lot depends on the area of town it's in. I go to Target whenever possible and the nicer Walmart when I have to. I wish we had a Super Target here. I'd never have to go to Walmart.
Why is it necessary to go to either of these stores? Everyone here makes it sound as if you MUST shop in one or the other. I can count on one hand the number of times that I have been in Walmart and Target COMBINED. I don't get it.

Where I live we have no other choice of discount store (except one Kmart). When we moved here, there was Ames, Jamesway, Caldor, Lechmere, etc...all gone now.

There are some things that can be difficult to find elsewhere that are easily found in those stores.

If I need a small houseware item, lets say a shower curtain liner, I can usually find something suitable at Target. To drive to Bed Bath & Beyond would be about 45 miles r/t. Now that I have a Kohl's, I'll shop there instead, but they don't carry everything that Target does, for example a laundry basket.

Ahhh..my palce to vent about the zoo and the walmartions

ok now let me start by saying this...not all people who work/ shop at walmart are walmartions....just the people who follow you around like a stalker, keep on asking you the same question and you keep on giving them the same answer, and the people who just attack each other with random products in the middle of the store.

my town just expanded the wal mart here...i have witnessed
-people wacking each other
-kids running away from the parents
-stuipid people pulling the VERY LAST POSSIBLE CAN ON THE SOUP PYRAMID SO IT FALLS!!!!!!
-people throwing products at each other...and hitting other people *cough me!!!!!!! cough*

so yeah...now it has a giant food court in the middle of it...which does nothing....

honestly...our wal mart is a hazzard....my friend was almost hit by a car, my classmate was close to being killed (or so we thought) by a light falling on him....its sad...now i relize that its also the people who shop there..yes i am grouping people but its only some and the scuzzy ones who feel that its ok to cause a hazzard to others from their neglegence of their kid to the fact that they CAN NOT drive and then take it out on us makes no sense.....I have refused to shop at wal mart for reasons such as that.

If you want to see a lion go to your local zoo....now...if you want to see a zoo...come to my wal mart!

go ahead...flame me

Actually the store itself is located in a very nice community. It is the folks coming in 40 miles from the city that make up the trash that shops there. I know quite a few that live near that Walmart and they wouldn't dare shop there.

I get all of DD's tights at Target. They have a great brand there that I can't find anywhere else.

Well, when I go to Walmart, which is about once a year, yes, I see the _______________________________ people.

I'm not saying anymore. That's one of the reasons I go to Target.
