The "That cost how much??" game!

I was just quoted $4k - $6k depending on unit & any duct work that might need to be done. That vs $400 for replacement of the dual capacitor. We went with the repair (for now).

I live in Nor Cal and just replaced mine for $8k. Nothing wrong with the heater but due to it being 10 yrs it was cheaper to do both then separate. For the person who asked about a shortage of cows................ with the droughts feed and water is sparse and expensive so a lot of farmers dumping their herds. Looking at prices pigs are cheap. Just bought a lot of hamburger for $2.99lb. Can't even afford to buy produce. Watermelon was selling for $8. This year I am determined to grow my own food where I can.

Everything medical.

I went to the hospital due to a possible heart attack (I was fine) and they kept me for 2 nights/3 days. It was over $30,000.

Dawn

Concert tickets

2 tickets to Paul McCartney = $580

Pretty much any act is more than $100. Then add in Riot Fest, Lollapalooza, Bridge School Benefit, and I Heart Radio - and it seems like a lot of my mad money goes to music.

A can of paint is $43?!?! Seriously??

It amazes me the amount of people sticking their hands into your wallet daily!!

Health insurance - over $20K for family coverage! And it still costs a fortune if anyone is admitted to a hospital.

Property taxes (for our average, not so spectular NJ home) - just raised to $15K. Guess I should be happy - most of my friends are paying $18-20K. :confused3

Every time I go to the grocery store - nothing is under $1 anymore! Years ago, we used to joke and say you couldn't go to Costco and spend less than $100. Now, the average trip is over $200. Whenever I think Costco is getting expensive, I go to Target or a grocery store and realize how much a bargain Costco is (relatively speaking). These prices keep creeping up and the product sizes keep trending down.

15 years ago gas was 85 cents a gallon. Now it is $3.85 a gallon!! So tired of dropping $50 filling the tank!!

The price of Disney resorts and park tickets keep going up and up! Thank God we stayed at the Polynesian 5 years ago - now the price is sooooo high I could not justify ever staying there (same goes for Grand Floridan and the Contemporary). Same for some of the Disney restaurants.

Airline travel is also out of control! Buying airline tickets is like playing the stock market since the prices keep changing. Also, the fees the airlines are charging on top of the airfares are getting obnoxious. There must be a rule from the FAA preventing the airlines for charging to use the bathroom on the plane.

I wanted to get a new minivan to replace our 10 year old Honda Pilot. My husband saw the prices and FLIPPED OUT! The minivan prices have been so inflated by adding 12 cup holders, built in coolers, DVD systems, navigation, power doors and CENTRAL VACUUMING :scared1: Don't get me wrong - central vacuuming might be useful in a minivan but all these features really jack up the price! Whenever I try to look at minivans, my husband wanders over to the similarly priced 2 seater convertible sports cars. Aghh. When I tell him we don't need a 2 seater convertible he tells me we don't need an overpriced living room on wheels. :rotfl2:

Kids birthday parties - my kids are begging for a birthday party at an outside venue (movies, bouncing, gymnastics etc). Kids birthday parties are $350-$500 for a basic birthday party!!

The price of smart phones and smart phone service! Completely out of control!

Ice cream! $6.49 for not even a half gallon. And..who the heck can figure out exactly how much we now get since its not a half gallon any more.

And,rooms at Disney. I priced one night at CBR in April-$231 for one night!
both of these
popped in my head right away

I had that moment when my DW showed me her receipt from Ulta.

lol...but you like the results, right?

Concert tickets

2 tickets to Paul McCartney = $580

spot on

I was going to say gym shoes, nikes or whatever...the days of the $30-40 shoe are long gone

and winter coats..down coats are more than a flight to the tropics

and train tickets...I *thought* that was an economical way to travel

back packs and school supplies, since they apparently include laptops now.

and my BIGGIE?

COLLEGE TUITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:crazy2:

That's a good one. We just got one of those indoor trampoline parks. They charge $600 for a kid's party. :scared1:

An oil change cost me $37.76. :mic: From a place we take 5 cars to be repaired (when needed). And the mgr (who did not ring me up) is a friend of our family.

Whatever happened to the $25 oil change?

I'll add bacon to the list. I go to a small local meat market and at the first of the year I was paying $3.49 for a pound of bacon. Last week it was $5.99! For bacon!

We wanted to do cabinet refaceing and new counter tops the price quoted from home depot was $26.000!!!!! Dh and I almost fell over:faint:

I'm an apprentice(newbie) electrician and tools kill me. Only buy top of the line stuff like Kline and Fluke.

For the folks shocked by pint/home improvement stuff look for a local building recycling place. I have one locally and paint is under $100 for a 5 gallon bucket. They also have all sorts of stuff people brought in. Pretty much like a Goodwill but for hardware.

Clothes I hit TJMax/Marshalls pretty much factory seconds/close outs.

Oh and the biggest shocker was Disney. Doing out of pocket for food, staying offsite and still it shocked me at $1600 per person for a week for flights, food, lodging, tickets and rental car.

Is that what you had to pay or was it covered by insurance. We have health insurance, but I had to take my kid to the ER due to severe pain on a Saturday night. Our insurance only pays 20% of ER care, so we just got a bill for over $800. Now we have to get follow-up surgery. I have no idea what that will cost.

We paid $1,500 roughly of the $30,000.

Health insurance. Currently more than my mortgage & you can double that cost if we actually USE it and have to pay all the co-pays & deductibles for anything more than a sniffle. $250 per month used to cover the entire family COMPLETELY.

No kidding, where I live the cheapest private policy for husband and wife $600 per month. Then there is the $12,700 deductible for both coverage and deductible that's $1658.33 per month. Then they will cover your medical costs. Even if the ACA paid all the policy cost, for the poor, it is still $1058.33 per month before you can get medical care paid for. Death is the doctor of the poor.

I know the pain. I'm an ER nurse. We have crazy high healthcare in this country. Plus my DH checked in at work one night. We just got the $2600 bill. Insurance only covered $736.

A driveway! We have stone right now. Got a quote for asphalt with a concrete walkway. Almost $9000 . You've got to be kidding me. Hey kids, do you want to go to Disney World this year and next year or get some asphalt? :rolleyes1

Holy crow, how big a driveway? I had mine done in concrete this week, $2400.

I can make everyone feel better instantly. I went to the store yesterday and paid $11.99/Kg for chicken. I know that's waaaay more than you pay. So, imagine me saying that's HOW much??

Kimblebee, you lost them at Kg! lol

$5.45 per lb

Health insurance - over $20K for family coverage! And it still costs a fortune if anyone is admitted to a hospital.

Glad to be Canadian - in my province Effective January 1, 2014, monthly rates are $69.25 for one person, $125.50 for a family of two and $138.50 for a family of 3 or more, unless you are 'low income' then it's a sliding scale from $0 to the max listed above.

It covers pretty much anything medical related, Dr's Visits, Specialists, Urgent Care clincs, ER visits, Hospital stays, childbirth, lab tests, x-rays, ultrasounds, CTscans and anything like that.
NOT Eyes for adults, or Prescriptions, Dental, Chiropractors, physio, ect for any age ( unless you have private extended medical coverage - which many get through work benefits)

My 1400sqf home on 1/2 acre is under $1000 for the year with the homeowners grant taken off

15 years ago gas was 85 cents a gallon. Now it is $3.85 a gallon!! So tired of dropping $50 filling the tank!!

Gas here just went to 146.9 per liter. There are 3.785 liters in a US Gallon.
I am paying $5.56 CDN for a US Gallon of Gas (5.25 US$)
It costs me over $80 to fill my Dodge Caravan if I am anywhere near E

Ironically much of your crude oil (that will of course become gas) is exported FROM CANADA!
Of all the foreign oil the US imports, the largest percentage from a single country, comes from Canada, and yet I pay a LOT more for gas than you.

I can still get a $20 oil change from Merchant Tire in VA. Of course they give you a list of 10 things wrong with your car, but I ignore it and take it to a good mechanic for anything more complicated than an oil change.
