The "That cost how much??" game!

dd is moving out on her own-so I know I will routinely hear this for the foreseeable future;). she has noooooooooooooo clue YET:lmao:

for me I'm always floored by the cost of 2 items-meat and otc meds. unless there's a really good sale at one of the local grocery stores we usually only buy meat at Costco every 2-3 months so I'm always taken aback when I see how much meat costs in the weekly ads. same with otc meds-the ones we use I buy big bottles of at Costco-it kills me if we run short in between trips and I have to pay nearly the same price for 1/5 the amount:scared1:

I could go on for days!

Carbon Monoxide detectors...$18 each! We just put our house on the market so we need one for each floor (3).

Cheap plain white twin comforter...can't find for less than $30 so I didn't buy one. We wanted it for staging our home.

$1,300 for someone to dig a 4' deep hole to replace 20' of sewer line, which only took 4hrs tops.

Gas!

...And pretty much everything else. LOL

I'm used to expensive paint, meat, and other household items but that doesn't mean I'm pleased with the prices, haha! Actually, the price of almond butter really upsets me when peanut butter is so cheap.

Is there a similar thread for disney only stuff? I would love to find out what things I should bring myself and not have to buy at outrageous disney prices.

Ummm.... EVERYTHING! If you can bring it from home without difficulty and you think you might need it at Disney... bring it! Advil/Tylenol, Pepto-Bismol, hand sanitizer, sunscreen (bring twice as much as you think you might need), bottled water (although I never feel the need... I'm okay with a free cup of ice water), glowsticks/glow toys, autograph book and pens, camera memory, phone/camera chargers, souvenir t-shirts, snacks, booze (for cocktails in the hotel room if this is part of your vacation), bug repellent, spare sunglasses (because someone always loses/breaks a pair)......that is most of what came to mind immediately.

That might seem like overkill, but I NEVER travel without the full complement of OTC meds that MIGHT be needed. I do NOT want to try to find a 24 hour pharmacy in a strange town while driving a rental car or (worse yet) in a taxi, while my child or husband are back at the hotel feeling icky! And I do not want to take up precious park time trying to figure out where to get an Advil for my aching head (too many rides in a row on Expedition Everest gets me every time...:rotfl: ). HTH......................P

Just happened to me this morning at the grocery store. ;)

Had a coupon $1.00 of 2 for those new wraps called REV (on the go wrap). Anyways they are $1.69 each and small. My son would eat one in 5 bites! No Way.

Also, had to buy ground beef - OUCH!

I got three estimates to put siding on our house. The lowest was $13,000!! I am a do it yourselfer, and have sided several houses, but working 2 jobs, was looking for the easy way out. After seeing these estimates I priced it out to do it myself. It comes out to around $4,000. Now I know what I am doing the rest of the summer. Talk about being in the wrong line of work.

I've been getting too jaded lately.. $120 for a replacement kindle, ~$44 to fill up my car these days, $5 for coffee and a biscotti... I could go on and on. I'm just not shocked anymore I guess. Truth be told, I'm annoyed that my husband and I can't seem to go out to eat anymore for under $30 even though we SHARE at most places. Also, $5 for ONE pint of beer? 6-packs more likely to be $8-10 instead of the $6-7? Yuck!

The last two super shockers I had was checking what one of them fancy Tesla S would run (STARTS at around $61,000!) and checking what Adventures by Disney charges for a week touring through Norway since they happen to have an adults only departure the same week we are cruising the fjords... $5099 per person for ONE WEEK! :scared1: They're true luxury goods of course, but even then!

Needed a pair of clear brastraps. No luck at 2 walmarts or a target.
Go to kohls, $7. FOR ONE PAIR. It probably cost all of 3 cents to make!
It's just a thin strip of plastic for crying out loud!

- every time I have to replace a tire on my SmartCar it's $230.
freaking stupid specialty tires.

Kids have friends over so I ran to Stop N Shop to grab some burgers and hot dogs for dinner. I grabbed the pre shaped burgers...not frozen and it was $5.99 a lb! What the heck! Is there a shortage on cows?

We are now having chicken drumsticks on the grill....99 cents a lb.;)

Health insurance. Currently more than my mortgage & you can double that cost if we actually USE it and have to pay all the co-pays & deductibles for anything more than a sniffle. $250 per month used to cover the entire family COMPLETELY.

I have to say fast food and breakfasts out. When Dh and I were dating we would often go out to breakfast because it was so inexpensive. Not anymore.
NO KIDDING! For whatever reason I was wanting a Bacon, Egg & Cheese biscuit from McDonalds. I went in with $3 expecting to to cost $2.69 or something. When the cashier asked for $4.38 I told him "You have got to be kidding me, sorry I am not spending that much" and walked out.

Or as I call it, the "you've got to be kidding me" experience.

Have you ever went to buy some thing, maybe you've never purchased it before or maybe it's been a long time and thought...

YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME! :goodvibes

My first experience was when I had to replace my washer and dryer a few years back. My old set lasted me 19 years :woohoo: and I think cost me 300 bucks for the pair. Good Lord, I had no idea they had gone up in price. :scared1:

Anyway,
Went to Lowes a few days ago to pick up some paint for a painting job....

$43 bucks for a gallon of paint (cue the music) YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!

So has the price of some thing made you jaw drop lately?

Yeah, you basically have to buy paint around Memorial and Labor Days. I got two gallons of paint at Ace Hardware for $30 during Memorial Day weekend. When you buy makes all the difference.

$1200 for 4 tires. Made me cring. Told my husband I was in the wrong business.

Ok...I paid for the tires also. Four of them last August. And then I learned about Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems. Or what goes wrong when your valve stem goes bad or breaks.

It costs $119 for each one plus tax and an additional $30 for installation.

The second one in my Jeep (2009 grand Cherokee) went bad this week. The first bad one is on my spare, so I didn't fix it. They have a life span of 5-7 years according to the mechanic. That means if I want the little light on my dash to go out, and all of these little sensors die, the cost is roughly $750.

That is to let me know if I have enough air in my tires....

A regular valve stem costs about $2-$3. That's what I installed and I will ignore the flashing light and the message about my TPMS each time I start the jeep. I will also keep an eye on my tires and use a pressure gauge every so often to monitor them myself.

Oh, and you have to have a good one on your spare.....or the light flashes - the computer knows......

I say that every time I look at the prices of the rooms at WDW.

A driveway! We have stone right now. Got a quote for asphalt with a concrete walkway. Almost $9000 . You've got to be kidding me. Hey kids, do you want to go to Disney World this year and next year or get some asphalt? :rolleyes1

That tire pressure monitoring system is required because of those Firestone/Ford Explorer issues about 10 years ago. One of the root causes of the tire failure was low air pressure. Yes...........if you frequently do a visual check and a pressure check, you can stay on top of the issue in all cases except when you get a puncture will driving down the road. I understand your reluctance to dish out the big bucks for 4 (or 5) sensors!

Ice cream! $6.49 for not even a half gallon. And..who the heck can figure out exactly how much we now get since its not a half gallon any more.

And,rooms at Disney. I priced one night at CBR in April-$231 for one night!

Eating out...anywhere! We are a family of five, and had a foreign exchange student staying with us for the last six months, going out to a sit down restaurant we can expect to pay $100 each time.

Coming from rural/suburban Michigan and moving to the Chicago Suburbs, the question seems to be more like what am I NOT shocked by!!! Housing prices are ridiculous, taxes are crazy, there is tax on FOOD, grocery prices are high, gas is high, and we actually have to pay close to $1000/year for our kids to go to public schools. We used to pay $150/ea for our kids to do club football and cheer, out here we pay $475 per kid, not counting cleats, competition shoes, and extras like pink socks and hairbows for October Breast Cancer Awareness games.

My recent, unexpected, crown on one tooth. I thought it might be about $1000, it was over $1600. EEK. Thanks to insurance that paid back $719 of it.....only out $900ish.

My DDs flight to/from Germany...just over $1600. That's crazy.

Ouch! Husband is going Monday for a crown, $1700.

I pricing out flights somewhere for my entire family. It was over $2500! :faint: Now I know why we never go anywhere! I was also just complaining to DH about the price of food today. I swear every time I step into the grocery store I am out at least $40!
