The "That cost how much??" game!

A PP mentioned ground beef. Yesterday I decided to pick up steak for us and thought that eye of round would be good enough. This is a cheap cut of beef and it was $5.99 a pound! I decided that we would just have chicken.

That tire pressure monitoring system is required because of those Firestone/Ford Explorer issues about 10 years ago. One of the root causes of the tire failure was low air pressure. Yes...........if you frequently do a visual check and a pressure check, you can stay on top of the issue in all cases except when you get a puncture will driving down the road. I understand your reluctance to dish out the big bucks for 4 (or 5) sensors!

Yes. Since I posted I have been reading up on this.

I've also priced out various replacement systems and they are considerably less expensive then the Goodyear installed prices.

I also discovered I still have low tire pressure monitoring despite the presence of the dash light in the form of a dash message read out....but I'm not sure whether it is reading that I have a problem or that an individual tire has a problem.

Since my 50K mile tires only have around 12k on them, I am now going to look for a fix that is less expensive for all 5 tires.

Also, since Goodyear installed the valve stem knowing the sensors were broken - first one when I bought the new tire set and again yesterday when I did my walk around and found another broken stem, does this mean that only the tire manufacturers are bound by the law? Not the consumer? I am not clear on this.

Also, regarding tire blowouts - the low pressure indicator is required to react in 20 minutes - my experience with the blowout was that I had no time and very little control. I was able to get over and get stopped safely but ...wow....that could have been a disaster in heavier traffic at my interstate speed. I guess the experts can explain how this system actually helps - I'm not so sure.

The price of iPhone/iPad cases in China. I thought that since they are made there surely I'd be able to pick up a case at a cheaper price than here. I was wrong. They were the same price as in North America if not more expensive!

Judique--

You are correct, the TPMS on many cars updates from about one time an hour to a couple of times an hour depending on the vehicle and its speed.

Obviously, even in the best of circumstances, the system can't really help you if you have a sudden blowout.............. but why did the blowout occur???

What is really does, is tell the driver that one or more tires has low pressure.

It was driving around with low pressure (and therefore flexing the sidewall a lot) that caused the tires to fatigue and then the tread to peel off the carcass in the cases involving the Firestone tires.

The only case where the TPMS system is of no help is if you strike an object that causes an immediate release of all the air in a matter of a few seconds.

But for things like a slow leak caused by a nail...................the TPMS can actually give you enough heads up and get the tire repaired before the tire is ruined. Driving on a severely underinflated tire can ruin it in just a few miles.

For many, even a visual inspection of the sidewall while parked is not a true indicator of whether the pressure is correct. 26 psi looks an awful lot like 32 psi from a sidewall perspective.

I hope this info helps a bit.

Outdoor furniture.

I'm supposed to pay thousands of dollars for stuff that gets rained on and animals poop on? No thanks.

Even simple little beach chairs that you know won't last a season are more than $20!!

I'm also always surprised by the price of kids pajamas. I don't know why they seem so overpriced to me. I tend to stock up on PJ pals when Disney store has them on sale, but if I do need to buy a pair, I'm always shocked by the price.

You're not kidding! Even the dumb outdoor furniture cushions are sky high. $30.00 a cushion and up?! That's crazy high.

Our dog chewed the cushions of our set. We got a nice outdoor chest to store new ones in now and still probably need another chest. But there is no way I'm paying that much for outdoor cushions/pillows. Most of them are not thick enough and I'm skeptical they have the quality to last one season. We need a bunch of them!

Prices like that would add up to almost as much as to replace the set, metal frame and all. I didn't see any great sales pre-season. I'd really like to replace them but not spend a fortune to do it.

----------------------

As a pp mentioned, a fast food tab for our family now rivals what used to be a moderate restaurant tab. That is a shocker. We aren't going out to eat quite as much as we used to. We don't drink sodas anyway, so that helps keep the price down and it's healthier. We often share ff just because we only want a few anyway.

We used to go out and get milkshakes as a treat. Our local place has reduced the size of the cup and increased the price. So maybe we'll get them once in a blue moon when we are out. Maybe. But I think for the most part, I'll just make it at home now. I priced it out. Even with the increase in ice cream prices I can get about two milkshakes for the price of one if I do it at home.

Everything has gone up!

---------------

I think the most shocking, "It costs how much?" thing for me was how much the Photo Pass has gone up. It was an additional $25 for a family sitting the first year. I have to say it was a bargain. It went from being a bargain to not so much. Every year since then it went up considerably. I don't know if they even do the family sitting now. I have seen the Memory Maker, but it doesn't look like the same thing. Is the Memory Maker an additional $199 (or $149 pre-trip buy)? I don't know.

THIS!!!!!
And yet I broke down and bought all new patio cushions full price last summer because I wanted to spruce up the deck and they looked nice. Then the resident stray cat sprayed one, and the dog ate another. I give up. Y'all can sit on the ground for all I care.:headache::rolleyes1

Talenti Gelato Pops ($4.99/3). Felt bad telling the kids no, but that's almost half our daily food budget for a gelato pop.

Kid's speedo competition suits. $70 or so. Fast suits are closer to $200 and only last a few meets. For 9 and 10 year olds.

My daughter's hair products. She has super curly/dry hair and needs good styling products. The cream she puts in post-shower is about $20/5 ounces. Then she needs another product for styling it when it's dry which is about $10 for 8 ounces.

Jack Rogers sandals. $110. I just attended my DD's 5th grade graduation and it seemed like half the girls were wearing them (all in the same color). I have three pair that I've acquired over the last decade but I wouldn't buy them for a child with growing feet.

Oh, and my stairmaster is acting up. I bought one 16 years ago for $2,200. I use it daily for over an hour. I went to see how much a new one would be. Over $4500:(

YES to all of the things mentioned so far!

Outdoor furniture! Kids pajamas! Tires! Food!

I'm going to add insurance (house, car, etc.) and . . . . PLASTIC WRAP!

I just went to Target the other day. $4.79 for plastic wrap?! What?!

Not just kids PJs...adult PJs are super expensive too! Even with a coupon at Kohls they can run $40 a pair. I will not pay $40 for something to sleep in. Last time I bought some I stocked up when I saw a $12/pair sale at Kmart. They have held up better that some of the $40 ones! I always ask for PJs for Christmas because I know I won't spend money to buy them for myself.

Paper towels.

Wegman's wanted $5.99 for a Bounty 2 pack. I bought a store brand single instead and it was still $1.69. Now I keep yelling at my kids when they tear one off to dry their hands. Use a cloth towel!

They are high. We bought Bounty "Basic" thinking it would save some money. What a waste. So thin it takes extra sheets to dry off or wipe up a mess. Never again.

I ask for PJs for Christmas for the same reason! We just bought tires.... 610.00 for the mini can but all our one tire needed that caused the TPMS to flash was a new battery. The mechanic did warn me that if the sensors go bad they are required by law to install them. Discount tire is 70.00 for a new one.

Central air conditioning units. 10 years ago I installed a whole central air system ductwork and all for the price of replacing just one condenser and air handler of an existing system today. I have multiple quotes and I'm blown away by the prices.

We have an area next to our house that is too shady and the sod didn't take. We thought it would be great to put in a patio there. had three guys come and give us a quote for a brick paver patio (I don't want a slab). We had used an online calculator that supposedly quotes based on your zipcode- we were expecting $3k-5k.

Nope, the estimates were between $14,000 and $16,000.

We decided a picnic table on the grass would work just fine, and did some DIY flower beds along the house wall (where the sod didn't take) for $150. We'll put in hostas, which grow in shade.

Cost to replace burned out Prius headlight: $250

My Prius is 6 years old and I've had them each replaced once. Not looking forward to one going out again. :crazy2:

I was just quoted $4k - $6k depending on unit & any duct work that might need to be done. That vs $400 for replacement of the dual capacitor. We went with the repair (for now).
