My name is Alexis and I love food. And Disney. They are both necessary in order to sustain life. (I am pretty sure that is factual. Check it on Wikipedia or something.) This is my first Dining Report, so hopefully I am not too confusing, and provide enough detail of the experience. If anyone has any questions regarding any restaurant, menu item, or shoddy description- please do not hesitate to ask! :rotfl:

Lunch at Chefs de France, Epcot

As I mentioned in my TR, I just barely arrived on time. But once I got there, they seated me very quickly! I was placed at a table on the left-hand side of the restaurant, right at the windows, with a [restricted] view of the lagoon. My waiter was sweet and cute and very attentive. I snapped a picture of the table setup.

6bf87cb6-5e90-4497-81ae-375533cb5583_zps7ab49969.jpg

Paper place mat...eh, but people are messy. So I get it.

Then I ordered some iced tea and headed to the restroom to wash my hands before my meal. (No bathroom pics- sorry. :rotfl2:)

When I came back to my table, it looked so adorable, I wanted a picture of my wonderful location.

6179152a-b8b3-477e-9a77-df4def9ca474_zps736d23a7.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality, I had to use the illuminate tool so you could see the table!

I had already planned my meal before I arrived...but when I got there and had this cute waiter...I was less inclined to really pig out! I decided to ask him for recommendations.
His suggestion for a starter was the Plateau de fromages de France, aka a cheese plate. I really love cheese, so I decided that was a good idea over the flatbread. Sadly, what I REALLY wanted was the Macaroni baked with cream and Gruyère cheese as my entree. But I couldn't justify a cheese plate followed by some mac and cheese! My waiter, Tom, said something about the chicken being good. To be completely honest, his accent was nearly undecipherable, so I just said 'sure!' and took a breather after that extraordinarily difficult ordering ordeal. (The dish was the Demi poulet fermier roti Pommes rissolees et broccoli.) :faint:

After a few sips of extremely bland tea (sorry FL, I love you, but your tea needs help!) Tom came back with a baguette and two pads of clearly labeled 'salted butter.'

b9828e58-f28e-4a49-bc1e-a2f390e78e88_zps33221140.jpg

I took it out of it's sleeve and made it look pretty for you!

The bread was fine, nothing crazy. Perhaps a bit too hard for my liking. I don't believe eating should be difficult, so when it is, I am normally a little put off. Also, maybe I should have paid more attention to that butter's packaging- because it was very salty. So be warned, the salted butter is SALTED!!!

Well, I didn't have more than a bite of that bread when my plateau de fromages arrived, presented appealingly like so:

e86c3d90-7cec-4884-838c-be2379844733_zps509e7ca0.jpg

Cheeses: Bleu, Goat Cheese, Gruyère, Brie
(Unfortunately I could not understand the name of the the first cheese on the plate...and I asked him to repeat it 3 times. :confused3)

My first impression of the cheese plate was obviously that it was presented well; also that it was quite plentiful. I'd say you are most certainly getting your money's worth if you pay out of pocket for this treat.

And a TREAT it was.

Let me RAVE over this cheese plate, folks!!!
The quality of the cheeses featured on this plate were remarkable. Each one was creamy, but sharp. None left an offensive taste in your mouth (can happen with poor quality) and each one was better than the last. The grapes were clean (clean fruit is important to me.) and plump. They were not soggy, but firm, and practically popped when you bit into one! The bread featured on this plate was whole wheat with plums and walnuts. Whole wheat has a tendency to be dry, and this one was no exception, but the fruit retained it's moisture and helped the bread tremendously.
My favorite pairings on the plate were the brie with the grapes, the goat cheese on the whole wheat, and the unknown cheese on the baguette.
I had several bites of the gruyère, but I was not overly interested in it. And I honestly just....straight up ate bites of the bleu cheese. As much of it as I could, at least. It was VERY potent.
The unknown cheese, brie, and goat cheese were all totally gone along with the grapes and the whole wheat.

Tom returned, impressed by the dent I made in that cheese plate. (Honestly, I was already very full thanks to the bread and cheese...) A cute older couple next to me also took notice. From that moment on, we spoke the ENTIRE meal. Like, honestly, Tom asked them 3 times if they wanted to scoot the table over, haha! They were very cool. They were from Canada, had been married for 30 years, and were at Disney World for 30 DAYS! They were staying at 4 different resorts: Beach Club, AKL, Poly, and finishing out their trip with a week at GF! I was so jealous!!! (Oh, AND they were planning a vow renewal at Disney! This couple was like a dream!)

Somewhere in the middle of our conversation, while waiting for our entrees, a woman at the table in front of me, who was eating with her daughter, came over to my table. I will preface with this, because she could very well be a member of the Dis, and I do NOT mean to offend: I love the gift she gave me, it was very kind of her, and I wore it the WHOLE rest of my vacation! (Even taking it back with me this time!) So I thank her again. But her approach could use some work. Especially since I was in the middle of a conversation, and it was very awkward for me to cut the couple off to speak with this other lady.

7cd44de2-9740-481f-9728-5536599c86fd_zps2dd95c93.jpg

She told me I looked like I needed this gift from her... Maybe I look like an unpleasant person?

'Random Acts of (Sweetheart?) Angels' this is called. She told me all about how she makes these bracelets and sells them in packs of 3 online. I remember they sounded pricey. But I still appreciate the one I got. It looks very sweet with my pink MB.

So that happened. The couple I was talking to was very confused by it. Again, not trying to sound ungrateful...I guess you just had to be there because it was kind of strange how it happened. :confused3

After that, they received their entrees. I knew then, that mine would be out soon. I looked around hopefully- when I saw something that made me uneasy. Someone else was being served the chicken dish...and it was not what I should have ordered. I cannot, for whatever reason, eat meat off the bone. It freaks me out. And, because I did not even read the description of the chicken, that was what I was going to be served. I felt like I was going to pass out. (Maybe the lady knew I was about to lose my mind over chicken, so she gave me the angel bracelet! :scared:)

As if on cue, Tom arrived with my plate. It was even worse when I saw it up close. It looked like half a chicken sitting on my plate. (Oh wait, that's exactly what it was.)

21c6f8e3-1802-4b07-9862-db59de5ff989_zps03f1e986.jpg

Demi poulet fermier roti Pommes rissolees et broccoli... What my nightmares are made of.

The couple, for the first time, noticed me taking a picture of my meal. They asked if I was doing a dining review of the place, and I said yes! They graciously provided this info about their dishes: The husband tried the Quiche Lorraine (ham and cheese) for the first time, and he said it was incredible, though too much to eat in one sitting. He left with half of it. The wife said that her favorite meal in all of WDW was the Macaroni in this restaurant. (That REALLY made me mad.) So she said all good things about her macaroni, but again, it's so rich and so filling, she said she always eats a little of it, then takes it back to her room to nibble on for a day or two! I just barely kept myself from begging for the rest of her dish so I didn't have to eat mine...

But folks, it had to happen! Their eyes were on me now to see what I thought of my meal, so I fiddled with the napkin in my lap while eying the bird. I didn't even know how to start eating it! So I didn't start there, but with the broccoli. Naturally, like most vegetables at Disney World, they were far too salty, and a tad overcooked. I am not a fan of feeling like someone pre-chewed my food. Still, there were only like...4 pieces of broccoli on my plate. So I ate all of it.
Another factor of the dish that I immediately noticed, was that it is like, covered in gravy. I like gravy, but this was far too heavy for lunch. And only made everything saltier! The potatoes were my next move. In the photo, they look like pretty average fried potatoes. The picture is fooling you. Their consistency was unlike anything I had ever encountered before. They were fried, and I believe baked as well. But the potatoes...if I had to guess were of the Yukon Gold variety, as they were VERY sweet, very yellow, and very mushy. It is not what you are expecting! The first bite, because I didn't expect it, was sort of weird. I decided I would revisit the potatoes in a minute.
So on to the bird I went.
I did not personally touch the chicken at all. I refused to move, lift, or literally do anything with the wing, and instead went towards the breast area. It was beautiful cooked, and, as I guessed, it was rotisserie, which I really enjoy. The meat was so tender, and well seasoned. I do not eat the skin, so I have no comment on that, but the meat itself was not too salty. (FINALLY!) I honestly felt that the gravy took away from everything on the plate. It did not compliment the chicken, it did not go well with the potatoes, and definitely not the broccoli! Speaking of the potatoes, now that I knew what to expect, I tried them again, and I liked them. I doubt they are for everyone, but they were different, so that was kind of cool.

At that point, as if I wasn't full enough from the bread and cheese, I was starting to think about dessert and wondering if I should give up on my entree. I thought, "Maybe one more bite of chicken..." but when I stuck my fork in it, I hit some small breast bone and went, "NOPE!"
Tom had good timing and showed up to take my delicious, but scary chicken away.

My cute fun couple of friends' dessert arrived. She had the Fraisier, sorbet et coulis aux fruits rouges (a strawberry cake with sorbet) and he had the Creme Brulee. Her dessert looked SOOO good. Again, she said she gets it every single time and couldn't leave Disney without having it. He claimed the Creme Brulee there is the best on property. (Not sure if I agree with that one...but I didn't try it, so maybe!)
I was almost persuaded to get the Fraisier once I saw her dessert...but after I had changed my order for EVERYTHING else, I knew I could not do that to myself with dessert! I NEEDED the Profiterolles au Chocolat!!!

Now, Tom was a good waiter! But other than, ya know, being my waiter, we hadn't interacted much during my meal. I was really occupied with that couple next to me. Granted he was serving all of us, so he was around often, but we just hadn't spoken much after ordering.
So...when I got my dessert I was a little surprised.

8768dc60-ad83-4325-91ec-8e2d351cff84_zps8ecd4255.jpg

Edited so nobody will try and get with my man.

I am a very giggly person, so when I saw this, I immediately started laughing! He wasn't offended, thankfully, he thought it was cute and started laughing with me.
I just sort of looked at him and was like, "This is your number??" and he was like, "Yes! Yes! I had to share with beautiful girl!" I rolled my eyes and gently inquired about how many times he had done this before. He INSISTED that he went back and begged for the favor, and that I was the only one. He seemed sincere, so I giggled a little bit more and let him watch me put his number in my phone. What was even funnier, was then after that he told me his ENTIRE schedule for the rest of the week. And before walking away he finished with, "I get off at the 5 p.m.!" :lmao:

But back to the real focus here...this fabulous chocolate masterpiece.
The shock of the number kind of took the initial, "Wow this dessert is amazing!" moment away...and after I laughed for a few more minutes with the couple next to me about the situation, I looked back at this delicacy with my mind set on the pool of chocolaty pastry goodness!!!

The presentation, even without the added digits, is pretty straightforward. But I wouldn't want them to change a thing. Two cream puffs swimming in a pool of rich chocolate sauce and covered with white chocolate shavings. Who needs to spruce THAT up?? This baby sells itself!
I dove right into the chocolate sauce first. (And no, I wasn't lapping at the plate, despite my desire to.) It's perfect. What were you expecting? It's amazing chocolate. Nothing cheesy like what you'd buy on the shelf of a grocery store. But chocolate they melted themselves with care and love.
I then moved onto a cream puff. The pastry itself was on the dry side, but that is how I prefer them, especially when they are covered in a sauce. It's too easy for them to get soggy, and these were far from it. The cream inside was frozen. That was somewhat of a surprise, but I liked it. The only complaint I have is that the cream was quite frosty, whereas it should have been, well, 'cream'-y. I'm not certain they made the cream puffs themselves. Just because I don't believe the cream would have that consistency if they were freshly frozen, but I still enjoyed them. I was so glad I stuck to my guns and got this dessert. I ate 3/4s of it, then had to call it quits.

Dessert was pretty silent because I was very much enjoying myself, and after I finished, my new friends had paid their check and were heading out. We all shared some big (stuffed) hugs and wished each other well. Even though I knew I would never see them again, I was so thankful to have met them. They really made my experience at Chefs perfect.

Tom came back with my check, unsure if he should linger and talk about seeing me again. I could tell he wanted me to say something one way or another, so I said he would hear from me later that day, but that I was on vacation and intended to spend my time in the parks. He took that as good news, because I didn't say, "EW GO AWAY!" so he was content.
It was very weird to tip someone who was trying to take you out on a date! But I was generous, mostly because I knew we more than likely would not be going out. (Nothing against him, just keeping it real! :o)

I sat at my beautiful table and sighed while looking out the window. I didn't want to leave, but I knew someone else needed to have the experience I just did- so I gathered my things and blew all the cute waiters air kisses.

Final verdict on Chefs de France: Unmissable.

Next up: Dinner at Coral Reef!

Enjoyed reading your review. We have not been there before, now thinking about it.

Great review, I keep wanting to eat there but just never manage to squeeze it into our plans. Overall sounds like a good meal. shame you didn't spot the chicken was on the bone, although it looked good.
Sounds like you had an interesting experience ;)
Look forward to reading more :)

Ooooh la la! Some cute French waiter has a major crush on you!!! ;)

That's one thing (of innumerable) I love about Disney... You can find friends everywhere! People who really "get it" often feel like long lost buds and it sounds like the kind of experience that you had with that nice couple. Sooo jealous to learn of their 30 day vacay! :rolleyes1

Your dessert looked amazing!!! Even without the digits! ;)

Wowie, that was an eventful meal!

I know what you mean about cheese. I just love it soooo much, but if I eat too much, I will live to regret it ;)

So, did you go out with Tom?

Loved the review! I want to try Chefs on our next trip and I'm very glad I saw your review about the chicken because that is more than likely what I would have ordered but like you, I HATE meat on bones:confused3

Guess I'll check out the menu again though it will be at least a year until we return to Disney so I'm sure they'll have new items by then ;)

Can't wait for the rest of your report! You're off to a fantastic start :)

Thank you so much! Clearly I'd recommend it ;)

Thank you so much! There are a lot of good restaurants so I know that it can be hard to go to all the places you want, but I'd definitely say you have to eat here at least once! It was most certainly an enjoyable meal, and I ended up happy with all of my choices. Hope you make it there soon, and thank you for following along!

TRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACYYYYY! :hyper:
My girl is back from her world traveling adventure! :woohoo:

Yeah that waiter definitely knew how to make a girl feel good about herself! Or maybe he just knew how to get a good tip? Either way...kudos to him.

I also completely agree with you about connecting with others at Disney. It was especially nice this time because I was alone and felt more comfortable doing so. I LOVE chatting with people at theme parks, but normally everyone I go with makes jokes about me. "You should have seen Alexis talking to this guy in line, it was like she was doing a background check on him or something!" I'm just friendly!!!! :headache:

And don't even get me started on that dessert...I am sitting here thinking about those few bites I left on the plate...I was so foolish!

So, did you go out with Tom?

From one cheese lover to another, do me a favor and at least try their cheese plate!!!!!!! YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

Sadly my whirlwind romance with Tom the French waiter ended as quickly as it began. I'm sure I'll rehash over this in my TR... but basically I texted him, got no reply. Then he called me later in the week and to be completely honest: I could hardly understand him! The accent was so cute...but I have a hard enough time hearing people as it is, and I definitely felt uncomfortable asking him to repeat himself. It just wasn't meant to be!

But don't worry...that wasn't the only number I got. ;)

Thank you! I hope you enjoy it even more than I did!! And I know, we are just different I guess! Honestly, if you can stomach looking at it, and would be able to at least get some off like I could, or even have someone else do it- the chicken really was worth it. Like. Really worth it if you are a fan of chicken. (I definitely am.) But you are right, you have plenty of time to check the menu for changes and additions! There were a lot of good things on there...hence why I was a little intimidated once I arrived!

Best of luck to you planning your trip, and thank you so much for following along with my report! :goodvibes

Wednesday, April 23rd
Dinner at Coral Reef, Epcot

I'd certainly eaten a lot at lunch, but after strolling around for several hours, I was more than ready for some dinner!

IMG_6391_zpsf5618769.jpg

IMG_6379_zpse7d52e27.jpg

I thought the lobby was gorgeous!

I arrived at Coral Reef at 6:50, thinking I had a reservation at 6:45, and was upset I had arrived late.
When I walked up to the counter and gave them my name, I specifically said, "Hello, I have a reservation at 6:45 for one!" they said my name and told me they were running about 30 minutes behind. I kind of shrugged it off and figured that I couldn't complain, after all I was 'late' to begin with. But then they suggested I find a place to sit in the lobby, and they handed me one of those things that vibrates when your table is ready.

dbbb7898-c9d4-4dc7-8b4c-f144f32d96d0_zps4d10ad86.jpg

Needles to say, I laughed at their suggestion. It was clear they were running behind.

I went outside, after all it felt wonderful, and watched some kids play around with ducks in the grass. It was very cute. Plus I got to watch the gorgeous sun set behind The Seas building.

IMG_6388_zps09ef9e7a.jpg

Well...what I could of it, at least. (Still pretty!!)

And so time passed.
And then some more time passed.
And then I checked the time again...and it had been an hour.
It was now 7:50 and I was a little upset that I hadn't been seated, when EVERYONE else who had a reservation near my time had already been taken inside and seated. So I went back inside, somewhat huffy, and reminded them that I existed.
Well, I was quickly shut down by the person at the counter when they informed me that I had a reservation at 7:45. And that they were still30 minutes behind. So basically, my 30 minute wait had JUST started.
I sadly went back to my seat outside. So much for being late!

Well, at around 8:15 my buzzer went off and I was probably more excited than anyone who had ever been seated at this restaurant in WDW history. I skipped inside and happily presented my buzzer. They appreciated that I was now cheerful...a big change from before. :rolleyes1
They grabbed me a menu and I was lead further inside!

So. Believe it or not, somewhere between when I made the reservation online, and the time it took me to actually be seated, I had completely forgotten the real draw of this place: the underwater view!
When the host walked me inside, I actually GASPED!

IMG_6381_zpse703089a.jpg

AHHHH!!!!

I was trying not to be obnoxious, but you guys...I was so impressed, and soooo excited.
Everyone said THE place to sit was at the tank, so of course I wanted that, but when I got in there I saw all of those seats were taken. Fortunately, it seemed like any place you sat offered a nice view! (I don't know that for a fact...it just seemed that way.)

My table was PERFECT!

IMG_6394_zps06a148ea.jpg

I was on the 'second level' just above the floor seating!

The mosaic wall/barriers were so beautiful. I was happy to be able to inspect one closely!

20140423_201125_zps95a27fb4.jpg

And one more of my view!*

*As it turns out, I am very glad I did not get a table near the tank, and I'm not even sure I'd recommend it! Each window was continually filled with children...and in some cases, adults. Very annoying! I had a perfect view and remained uninterrupted.

20140423_200735_zpsa0404ae6.jpg

They leave a Fish Guide at your table so you can identify them as they swim by, I love that!!!

It took a while for the waitress to come to my table, but it didn't bother me. I'd been waiting forever anyway, and it gave me some time to soak the place in.
When she did arrive, she took my drink order ('sweet' tea) and brought me a basket of bread (pretty standard floured rolls) with a pad of butter feat. black sea salt.

20140423_201916_zps02ff025d.jpg

Not a great photo, but I was so hungry I almost forgot!

Speaking of forgetting...I dropped the ball on grabbing a photo of the menu, which I meant to do because I noticed some new items. One of those new items included the appetizer I decided to order.

20140423_202726_zps482ad070.jpg

Sriracha Crispy Fried Shrimp...over...like boring lettuce or something.

When I got my appetizer, I finally started to dig in to everything. Before there was a lot of activity in the aquarium!
The bread was very average. Brushing a standard food service roll with flour doesn't make it special! Nice try though!! I'm also just really not one for putting butter on bread, but I had already tried it at Chefs so I figured I just needed to give it a try at these other places. Well, the black sea salt was...just sea salt! And the butter was very cold, not desirable when you are trying to spread it. So, altogether, definitely skip-able. Especially when I had a big meal ahead of me.

The shrimp was another story! I love shrimp, regardless of how it is prepared. But with sriracha? Ohhh, sign me up! The shrimp was cooked well, but the breading was on the heavy side. I know most people prefer it that way, so that is why they do it. Ah well. At least it wasn't too salty! The sauce on the shrimp was similar to a hot mustard, but with a distinct sriracha tang. It was very good, but I wish they put more on it! Or provided it for dipping...maybe I should have asked!

Right as I finished my shrimp, my BEAUTIFUL entree arrived...

20140423_205056_zps375db832.jpg

Grilled NY Strip Steak served with horseradish smashed potatoes and market fresh vegetables (green beans)

My oh my. What a juicy presentation! When she set it down, I was basically swatting her away from the plate I was so ready to try this steak.
First of all, I ordered it rare, (The ONLY way you should order a steak), and had to check that it was seared to my liking. The butter-like cut in to the steak confirmed what I had hoped, it was cooked perfectly and a nice quality cut of meat. And of course, it was flavorful!
Also on the plate, they had offered some sort of peppercorn sauce.....something. Sorry that I can't remember! I did NOT like it! I prefer the natural taste of grilled meat, with the exception of a red wine reduction/sauce/accompaniment. So, putting this acidic, seedy sauce on this perfect steak...it was just questionable.
After several bites of the steak that I just couldn't get enough of, I moved on to the green beans. They were very fresh tasting, as you would expect, considering they are called the 'market fresh vegetable!' And they were also plentiful; they did not scrimp on the beans! I was very thankful because they are my favorite vegetable. (And I felt cheated by my broccoli at lunch!)

Before getting to dig into my potatoes, my phone started dinging over and over again. To my surprise my good friend, and previous history teacher, had messaged me on FB. We hadn't spoken in...around 4 months, and the last time we did- we said we'd go to lunch soon! Well, he called me out on the fact that we hadn't gone, and I responded, "Sorry! Let's do it when I get back from Disney!" Of course, the struck up a whole big conversation (he loves WDW too), and I was so happy about that...because truthfully, I was a little lonely at dinner. I sent him tons of pictures of my surroundings, and he gushed about the fact that he was going on a Disney trip of his own in just over a week. I was super sad I was going to miss him on his trip, and he was upset he hadn't planned his sooner! And from that moment forward, we dubbed the name of my trip, 'The D. Smith Guilt Trip: He Should Be Here.'
We kept talking for the rest of my dinner, while he graded papers. (He is now a college professor.) I would have felt rude (I was at a dinner table!!), but I was on my own, and my waitress insisted she was fine with me hanging out and taking my time because I was nice and a lot easier than any other table she'd had that evening.

Anyway...back to those potatoes! I dug into those babies soon after he and I started talking, and wow were they delicious. The horseradish is noticeable, but not overwhelming. Anyone who is not crazy about horseradish shouldn't have a problem with these potatoes. They are tangy but not offensive, and the consistency was like a dream. Unlike my steak and beans, I devoured the potatoes in a matter of seconds. They didn't stand a chance.
With a lot of determination, however, I finished every bite on my plate. It was too good to leave. I'd rather be miserably full!

Buuut..maybe that wasn't the best idea. My waitress brought me the dessert menu, and I knew better than to order one...but I was on the dining plan! So, of course I did! :rotfl:

The Chocolate Wave with Raspberry Sorbet...minus a bite

I saw several times on here that people had warned others that this is rich. I SHOULD HAVE LISTENED! This dessert is incredible. It's so small...you don't think it can pack that much of a punch, but boy was I wrong. Maybe, if you hadn't eaten ANYTHING else, and you had a gallon of water, you could possibly finish this...but I don't know, dude.
The 'chocolate' part of this dessert is a dark chocolate lava cake meets chocolate ganache. It's intense, and supremely fudgey. It's topped with overly sweet confectioners sugar to only further put you in a coma.
Under the 'cake' there is a raspberry puree that they artfully scrape across the plate, leading you to the other half of the dessert, the raspberry sorbet surrounded by chocolate shavings. The scoop of sorbet itself is very tiny, but the flavor is SO concentrated (TART) that, again, I couldn't dream of eating the entire thing. This dessert would definitely be better for two, or even three.

After scanning my band (and continuing to be confused over if the total is supposed to be JUST the tip, or the tip ADDED...) I left this beautiful place, to go take pictures of the EMPTY Epcot park!

Next Up: Breakfast at The Crystal Palace!

Loving your report and *awwwwww* at the French waiter! Just FYI the paper placemats are a French thing, pretty much EVERY restaurant in france use paper placemats :) so its less to do with the high turnover and the fact that its more authentic. (useless fact number #73446 :rotfl: )
