At the Haunted Mansion, the portrait room where the paintings seem to stretch has mystified guests for years. People wonder if the ceiling is rising or the floor is lowering.
In Disneyland, the floor actually does lower since the ride part needed to take place somewhat outside the park perimeter. the Haunted Mansion ride was too big to fit above ground in the park. The portrait chamber is actually an elevator that takes you underground to continue the ride. So an elevator takes guests down to that extra area.
Conversely, since Disney world has extra room to spare, the ride and the entrance area are on the same level, so the portrait room is just a holding area and the ceiling rises
