Not really a "spoiler" but interesting as Ford has said in the past that he disliked playing the role of Han Solo.

Ford could make up to $34 million for reprising his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The salary includes a $25 million upfront with a slim share of the film’s gross earnings.

Notably, Ford is getting paid 56 times the $450,000 flat fee received by British newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley—who each play new leading characters in the film. His salary is also far above the $1.5 million reportedly paid to Carrie Fisher to return to the franchise.

I agree that Captain Phasma was kind of underwhelming...they built her up to be such a big deal but she felt very superfluous. I believe it's been confirmed that she will appear in the next episode, so maybe she will be more important then? Not sure. I also think Kylo Ren is a super lame villain. Why even bother wearing a mask if you're going to take it off all the time? He just came across as a really angsty, snotty teenager going through a rebellious phase.

However, I LOVED the movie and can't wait to cosplay as Rey! I think she's awesome. I'm not quite sure what I think about her parentage, though. I don't think she's Han's daughter--wouldn't they have addressed it already if she were, as with Kylo Ren?--but she might be Luke's. Either way, color me intrigued!

Now that we've gone full on geeker here...

The prequels threw the whole question of "where do Jedi come from all out of whack". Forgetting the lunacies of the immaculate conception...

Old Georgie made them an order of celebrant monks...and while not 100% explaining where "Jedi babies come from"...they implied they are found, not bred...which means the Jedi didn't pass along a family tree...

The anakin with kids thing was made to look a
Little scandalous (if they manage to pull of any feelings of anykind)...

So now if you accept Leia had a Jedi kid...who of course goes murderous rogue to get ford off the hook...because she's just your run of the mill descendant from the most powerful Jedi ever...

Then does that mean lukey can too? Because he is the only one powerful enough to defeat true evil...being that he is the only one who did.

There's also this kinda weird "kenobi tie" that popped up here and there the last few days.


Will they try to explain this mishmash on film? Go along with part of it? Or go off the map and tell everyone to just go with it?

Im ok any of the ways. Kinda hope they just move on and try to not tie all of Lucas's dead ends together.

I think you have to look to the soundtrack for the answer. John Williams may have given us some operatic foreshadowing.

Yes, this! It is one of the main things I noticed as a give away. Several times in the movie.

As for Kylo being a "weak" villain, that is purposeful to show his training is incomplete (as referenced by Snoke at the end). He is pulled between wanting to pay homage to his grandfather (hence the mask and voice to emulate him) and his parents and the light side. His behavior made sense to me.

And as long as we are speculating. I walked out with some distinct thoughts on the major plot lines for the next 2 movies. I'm not a super fan and there may be leaks of the next 2 episodes out that I haven't seen, but here are my thoughts trying to take 2+2 and make 9. First, Rey is Luke's daughter. Ep 8, she is trained by Luke as a Jedi. The major plot line will be Kylo being brought to the light side by Rey while dealing some sort of blow to Snoke and the New Order.

Remembering Lucas always planned 9 movies, the major plot line for the final episode will be Rey and Kylo (and maybe Luke) joining forces to defeat Snoke, forever defeating the dark side and providing a nice "ever after" finish to the whole series.

Just my thoughts. Feel free to slash away.

I agree. I actually think at this point he was played/acted/developer perfectly. His emotions are out of control. His anger dictates his decisions. He idolizes grandfather who wore a mask. It's intimidating. But - he's not fully developed. He isn't in control. So off comes the mask. He's still struggling with Kylo Ren vs Ben.

9 movies? This is the Golden Goose that Disney (now that Lucas is no longer providing input) will cash in as long as they generate revenue. I see this phenom go on for generations to come. I see them celebrating Ep 100 eventually, since the galaxy is so big
As far as I am concerned, lather me with as many of these, and keep the stories as good as they have been. Great job so far.

Personally, neither I nor my DH was impressed and we have been watching the Star Wars movies since the beginning. All Finn did was run around most of the time. Like the Rey character. My son kept shouting out "where's Mark Hammil?" during the movie, so he was disappointed that he didn't see Mark until the last 30 seconds of the movie. I was just expecting more/something better. Have no desire to see it again until it comes on TV.

Well...he's the kid of two of the three main characters...some of the most recognizable characters in film/pop culture history...

I don't think "masked Jerk wagon" was what they were going for completely.

I couldn't agree more.
I think this is a case where people are expecting the wrong character - darth Vader - and it will take the next Movie to bring many around. I think they did a near perfect job so far.

The Hayden Christiansen comparisons/complaints that immediately popped up are off base IMHO

I'm genuinely curious as to what your review is based on?

Is it the rehash of story? Or that they didn't tell a complete one?

I have to say that initially I had some mixed emotions coming out of the theater...but it has grown on me since...

Loved all of it. Absolutely gutted with the major part of the film; genuinely felt emotional about it. In fact, I felt emotional about quite a lot of the film but it felt like after all this time, we finally hear that introduction music and see the rising text and then see exactly what happened to characters I have grown fond of since my days as a child some 25 years ago.

I'm sort of the opposite. I walked out thinking OMG!!! THIS IS GREAT! And a perfect setup for the next 2. Now that I've had a little time to think (and I watched Episode 4 when I got home) it feels like a remake of Ep 4 and some of 5 and 6. There were several scenes I was sure they lifted out of Ep4.

All that said, I am still extremely excited about the movie. It did exactly what it needed to do. Assure a tight connection to the original trilogy while introducing new characters and setting up the next 2 movies. It did it in a spectacular way that has created excitement in nearly all segments. (Fan boys, SW generation and the new generation that never saw the originals in a theater). Great job to J.J. and Disney.

Star Wars has always been about what is old is new again right?

There were 2 Death Stars in the original trilogy. So why would the Empire/First Order stop? They think the way to rule is to have the single ultimate weapon. It's in their DNA.

Droids have always been central. The empire/first order rejects droids as anything of value (see Clone Wars) so they are a safe partner for the rebellion (R2, Chopper, BB8). So the fact BB8 carries a secret makes sense.

Rey being dumped on a desert planet - if she is Luke's daughter - he'd put her in a position he knows.

I know I won't change your mind, but the reuse of family story and a recall to the past is very common. Star Wars is a huge universe with a simplistic story. To make it anything else is what the 'Stories' are for. It's bad guy seeks power through superior weapon to rule universe. Rebels seek to win through small groups of dedicated fighters who achieve more than they should through luck and cooperation and belief. Families are torn apart and orphans make choices between evil or good and the cycle repeats.

Yeah - the whole point of the prequels was almost the Catch-22 of great power (in the Force). "We have rules against love/marriage to protect everyone involved since there are people with this mystical and great Force power. ...but of course human nature will not be held in check, so they pair up sometimes anyway - and look what a disaster it creates (Vader)! See why we have rules, Anakin??? But it ain't all bad (Luke & Leia).

The BIG question for me is the whole "balance to the Force" idea. Anakin was supposed to bring that, but what does that mean? "Balance" meaning perfect peace? ...or balance meaning a stalemate between two super-powers, the dark and light? What Anakin achieved was WIPING OUT the Force. Is that balance? At the end the only thing left was his son. Then the absence of a great power for good in the Galaxy created the mess we have now... so we're still mopping up from Anakin's love affair.
