The space shuttle

I just know that I would have been one of the ones crying. To see the park stop and see the Space Shuttle overhead, my emotions would have taken over. How amazing that you got to witness this on the 4th of July. Very patriotic. Very moving.

We happened to have been at WDW a couple of times when there was a shuttle launching and we quickly turned on our video camera. How awesome to have witnessed that on the 4th of July! :sunny:

You know, everytime the shuttle takes off it burns a huge hole in the ozone. They won't let people underneath the launch pad for a day or soon because they would get sunburned badly and quickly. Perhaps that was what it was?
Uhmmm, you've got your science wrong there. They don't let people on the lauch pad because you can get sick from the residue of the engines. The "hole in the ozone" thing would occur many miles down range, over the Atlantic Ocean, if it happens at all. Wasn't able to find any solid proof online about it, but did find references on some strange sites.

My husband and I were thinking of you lucky folks down in Florida who got to witness the launch (and on the 4th of July, too).

We've seen it launch twice from WDW (the Columbia in Oct, 1993 and Discovery in May, 1999). Two moments I will never forget. :thumbsup2

On a clear day here in Miami, but the best was when I was on a Amtrak Train coming home from WDW, people were standing up looking out the window, as the train slowed down, and we saw a great view of it. :goodvibes :thumbsup2

It's an awesome sight, isn't it? I saw it in April 1983. I'd just arrived with my mother and grandmother for the week, and we were having lunch. We noticed a crowd of people standing outside, looking up, and my mother smacked me and said, "The shuttle launch is today! Run out there, I bet you can see it!" I'll never forget it.
Smacked'cha, huh? :goodvibes I'm guessing you're my age, and when we were younger you got smacked for being bad, for being good, a-ha moments, when something was funny, eating popcorn, etc. etc. My mother was an equal-opportunity smacker and if your parents didn't smack you, then something was wrong with them!

here's hoping someone got pictures of it from the parks, I've been watching the boards all day looking for one!

We saw it from POR parking lot! It was absolutely beautiful and I cannot believe we saw it live. The most amazing thing was watching it go up and up and up, then poof! It was as if it slipped into a pocket and disappeared. Very cool. Wish the camera was working, but the humidity sent the battery into a cranky mood. Lives in my memory which is more than enough!

Such a perfect day for it too. :thumbsup2 I hope they have a safe journey!!!

What an amazing thought! The irony of coming out of MS and see the shuttle is perfect. I am a HUGE Space Nut and would have gone crazy to be there. I would have preferred to have actually been at the Cape but either would have been a fantastic experience. Happy 4th of July!! :thumbsup2 :sunny:

Trust me, what makes you think that there wouldn't be a hole in the ozone?
Something with that much heat and that much gases...just think about it.
They won't let them on the launch pad because of the residue AND the hole in the ozone. The government just doesn't really make that a super known fact because of enviromental concerns.

Wow, you really believe this? Think about it...how high up is the ozone layer? How far away is the space shuttle when it reaches this altitude?

Even if it did "burn a hole" (it doesn't) it wouldn't be anywhere near the launch pad.

After several years, we've got a system down now.....Watch the shuttle on the tv and as soon as we see that it's off the ground we RUN out the front door to see it go up...then once we can't see it anymore, we RUN back inside to find out the progress.....gosh I love living in Florida!

Does anyone have pictures taken from WDW of the shuttle going up? If so, please post them!! It doesn't have to be of this shuttle launch, just of any one!! :thumbsup2

We were at Downtown Disney the afternoon of the 4th. I was waiting with several others looking to the heavens, when it appeared. IT WAS AWESOME!!

We went to Cocoa Beach on Saturday to try to catch the launch closer. We spent 3 hours traveling back to Orlando on Saturday (60 miles). What a nightmare... So we decided to skip driving to Cocoa Beach again.

I have some pics and will post them to this thread soon!

Well, then, you can't blame me. :confused3
Thats what I was told by teachers and family for all of my life. :badpc:
If you chose to believe just stuff that people have told you, rather than looking it up for yourself, you can be blamed. Educate yourself, and you will be richer because of it.

Yes, a "hole" (for all that term is worth, really) is made in the ozone, over the Atlantic Ocean (as I stated in the first response I made) miles and miles from nothing. This "hole" is naturally repaired within minutes of the shuttle passage. The ozone over the middle latitudes is much thicker than at the poles (btw, the holes in the polar ozone have been shown to be naturally occuring and have cycles) and isn't in any danger of burning away.

Thanks for that tidbit of information then. I usually look things up (Wikipedia is my homepage) but didn't think to look this up.
Oh well, I am still young anyway. :badpc:

Darn... For a moment, I thought we were heading for an episode of the X-Files with a government conspiracy on the ozone etc.... :)

Sorry could not resist... :)
