DAY 6-part 3
So after Spaceship Earth we headed back over to Soarin’. Everybody was pumped up because they saw how quickly the fastpasses ran out that day and they were very curious to see what all the hoopla was about. Here’s the sign heading on up to it:
Ok….this is the part of my trip report that everybody is going to jump ship because they are going to think I’m insane or something. I’m prepared to lose all my loyal followers from what I’m about to say: Soarin’ is not really that great at all.
Ok, I said it. I’m sorry. I mean it’s different and unique but I am flabbergasted that it is so hugely popular.
I did this ride one time and that was back in Feb when I went with my friend. She’s been all over the World and has been to Disney tons of times and she is completely impressed with this ride. When I saw how excited she got about it, I was intrigued to do it because Julie has done everything and been everywhere (versus my country bumpkin’ self) so if she’s impressed, it must be good! Well….once we did it and finished, I was like “huh? That’s it?” I don’t want to say it’s terrible or that I’d never do it again, not at all. I’m just saying that I am shocked that people will wait in huge lines for this.
BUT…..I did not tell my family at all or let on in the tiniest bit about my Soarin’ opinion because I wanted them to go into it with no preconceived notions. So…we hiked on over to it and since we had the fastpassses we zipped right in. We did get held up in one area for quite awhile I thought and everybody was getting sort of antsy but compared to the giant stand-by lines that went on forever, we were very grateful!
I remembered that when I rode this with Julie we got stuck on the very bottom and I took a mental note to try to request to sit on the top row when I took the family. Well, I froze up and was too chicken to ask because the CM seemed very busy and I didn’t want to bug her. And wouldn’t you know…we got bottom row. Ugh. Not loving those feet dangling overhead.
The best part of this ride is the scents. I do like that and Allison commented on how cool that was. I don’t think Ian and David even noticed. I looked at Ian while we were on the ride and I saw him looking all around and looking down at the floor and trying to figure out how it all worked. He’s not supposed to do that because he’ll see the floor and ruin the moment! I swear I’m not a diva and a picky person but the rumors about the screen being dirty and having lines in it is very true by the way. I hate to admit it though.
After the ride, the fam was like “that was neat” but none of us 4 had that pumped up feeling like you get after so many other attractions. I think most of us thought it was just like watching an IMAX movie. I’m sorry….I don’t mean to be negative or tick any Soarin’ fans off. Like I said…it’s unique and fun but the popularity and hype boggles my mind. And for all those waiting to find out what David’s most favorite thing on vacation was…..Soarin’ was not it.
So….we then headed over to Captain EO. Dave is a huge Michael Jackson fan so I figured “hey why not”. There was no “wait” exactly but we did have to kick around until the next show started. The kids went bonkers playing in this water attraction!! They went nuts and loved it! Funny how some of the things that I didn’t even plan for or know about ended up making such good memories (water fountain thing and dolphin show, etc etc). As a matter of fact, after EO, Ian begged to play at this fountain more versus getting over to Test Track!
Well, we got into EO and well…….what can I say? Words can’t describe this train wreck. I remember this from the 80’s so I knew it would be cheesy but I guess I’d forgotten just how cheesy it was. Ian doesn’t really know anything about Michael Jackson and afterwards he said “I thought he was a boy, not a girl?". Poor kid didn’t know what the heck we just watched.
David ranted a little about how George Lucas helped produce it and he was upset that George would be a sell-out on something like this. I don’t know exactly what he was ranting about……something like that. Anyhoo…..once again, I wouldn’t say we regret seeing it because I want to see EVERYTHING at WDW one time or another but if we had skipped this and the Ellen snoozefest, we would have had maybe another 1 ½ in World Showcase darn it! So….if you guessed that David was WOW’d and blown away by EO…….um no.
Ok…enough of my negative ‘tude..
It was probably around 5 pm at this time (I’d know for sure if I had set my clock on my camera, duh) and it was time to get to Test Track. We had our passes and zoomed right on in. The whole attraction is done very well, even the line and pre-show stuff. All 4 of us really liked it! I never did this ride when I was here in Feb. so it was even new to me. The only thing is that the ride felt much shorter than I guess I imagined it would be. Dave and I were in the backseat with maybe a 10 year old single rider boy. It was hilarious because that kid yakked in David’s ear the entire time. He talked non-stop about what was coming up next, what was cool, “just wait for the end”……yakity yak yak. David is so nice and polite that he kept talking with the kid so he wouldn’t hurt his feelings but it was funny because Dave isn’t a talker and I know he felt weird the whole time. I wanted the kid to zip it because apparently he’d done this ride bunches of times and he was spoiling all the surprises in it for Dave. But…even with the Jabber Jaws sitting next to him, David still enjoyed it.
When it was over, we all were pretty excited and liked it a lot! Except for the part where my sunglasses fell off and I stepped on them when I got out. Anyway….David said this was his favorite WDW ride on the whole trip or maybe tied with ToyStory Mania. Yay!! He really liked it. BUT…THIS IS STILL NOT HIS BIG “WOW” MOMENT for all you that guessed it would be Test Track. It was his favorite ride maybe, but not the “magical” experience that he got enthusiastic about. That’s all coming up very soon, I promise I promise. Hint…It’s a Day 7 thing and not even something that happened on our Epcot day.
The kids loved TT too and even had a great time checking out the cars on the display floor afterward. I liked TT of course but I’d honestly have to say that Epcot to me is not about the “rides” anyway and I could probably go there all day and not need to do a ride. I’m more of a World Showcase kind of girl.
I did feel a little sad after this ride though because I had this horrible feeling that this was the last “ride” on our vacation.
All we had left to cover was World Showcase. We still had a full day tomorrow but not any specific park plans so I just wasn’t sure if it was our last “ride’ or not, but I had a feeling it was…..boo hooo. Was this our last November ’11 WDW vacation ride or not??? You’ll see as I finish up the report on this day and our final Day 7 segment.
After TT and my little episode of feeling sad, it was time to get on over to World Showcase since we had an 8:30 reservation at Rose and Crown. It was only 6ish so that was good because we could “work” our way around that direction and check out the countries. Even though I was a little sad since we were on the tail end of our vacation, I was really excited to see Illuminations this night so that cheered me up!
Next segment will be about what we got accomplished in World Showcase and dinner at Rose and Crown and Illuminations!!!
