hey, was wondering...last time when we went to disney, we get to have dinner before the shamu rocks show, but originally we got a bit confused, and thaught there was something along the lines of actually going backstage and meeting shamu...petting him etc. i am not sure how true this is, only i heard it during our stay at seaworld. what i was wanting to know, is if you can do it...and how much extra is it?. also....does it get booked up early

They dont let anyone pet the orcas. They havent for a couple of years now. And They dont have shamu rocks anymore. They have the christmas show.

ah the christmas show....of course!. well, i am sure it will return next year....seems a popular show. why don't sea world let you pet him anymore

i think they don't let anyone pet/touch the killer whales due to safety reasons and legal issues, as sometimes the whales can do the unexpected and misbehave. Better to be safe than sorry as they say

i remember in the mid90's when a child would be pick to come and sit on the back of the whale.

that's strange, why would have you been able to tuch him years ago, but not now?. here is my argument:

1: he is a trained wale, because he does his shows every night, surely sea world know that and use it to there advantage. my other argument is, if they knew it was unsafe, then why do it in the first place

Maybe their insurance won't cover such a risk.
Maybe there is pressure from environmental groups.
Maybe years ago, nobody envisioned that people would sue people over the silliest things.

I don't think they believe it is unsafe. I think their legal department made a decision.

When you get a chance, check out the "warnings" posted near the entrances of Shamu's Happy Harbour rides. A few state that anyone without 2 functioning limbs should not ride. And other similiar warnings are on other rides. I think someone in their legal department has been working overtime thinking of "potential issues".

maybe you are right, i am sure seaworld think it is perfictly safe. and what ride?. what is it, when we went, all the rides we saw were wild artic, atlantis and some kinda coaster

There are 5 kid rides in Shamu's Happy Harbour over near Shamu stadium-Shamu Express (kid roller coaster), Jazzy jellies (tea cup ride in the sky), and a few others cute for younger kids.

Later today, when I get more time, I'll try and download some pics I made of the signs.

Even though the orcas are trained it doesnt mean they still can't do anything wrong. They are still wild animals. Just like Last year a orca, Kasatka, at SWC dragged her trainer to the bottom of the pool twice during a show. She wasn't told to do it, but because they are much bigger than us and stronger things can go wrong even with the professionals.

Like Ocean Love said, the orcas are wild animals.

I remember several occasions where we waited for the Shamu show to begin, or never begin, due to the 'behavior' of the orcas.

Once, the BIG orca, refused to go back into his 'holding' tank after an earlier show and the next show (that we were at) had to be cancelled.

ah i see, i guess the wale wouldn't do the tricks?. someone told me that happened to her once, she saw the show (or tried to see it) but the wale did not want to do any of the tricks. shame you can't tuch shamu....i think it is a real let down, and change from years ago
