i sent my 28-135 lens in due to purple fringing end of april...still hadn't gotten it back so last week i called, got the usual they are still working on it routine so i asked to speak with customer relations( evidently the poor guys who deal with crabby customers such as i am;) ) he was nice said it was crazy my lens has basically been in the shop or in transit since the end of Jan. and he'd see what was up...called me back, played phone tag for a few days, long and short, i guess i have caused some big uproar at canon and they want a cd of raw shots so they can send it to some place up the line from the repair place to examine my poor lens and see what is up with it...so how long do you think THAT will take, at least till the end of my warranty..so Jan - at least June= no lens....cuss relations has no idea what the big guys think is wrong or what they are looking for...so what would you do in this case? they again asked for the camera, i again said no way. i don't mind sending the cd but this is ridiculous imo. i bought the lens July 18, it started having problems around Oct or Nov so i mostly stopped using it ( i assumed it was something i was doing or that the f stop was really limiting for some reason)and it totally quit working in Jan so i basically used it for 3-4months and that is it( they replaced the is, some key, motherboard, adjusted focus, cleaned it and now i don't know what else). i asked for a refund after i sent it in the second time and it was still bad and they said they don't give refunds. i mean fine if they are trying to figure out what they need to improve but where does that leave me? basically lens less!

Tell them you'd be happy to send in your camera if they will send you something to use while it's in the shop :)

BTW, which repair center did this go to? I hear the on in Irvine is the best (I think the other is in NJ).

At this point they will not even just give you a new lens? Not having much faith in my Canon products now!

With as much effort as they have put in to it, they should have just changed it out for a new one by now. They replaced my A70 with an A520 and then my S1 with a S2 with no questions asked. They were under the sensor recall though. They may say no refunds, but if you make enough noise, things could change. Write a letter to a vice president or something.

Kevin

Would you be willing to accept a refurbished replacement instead a refund? They might be willing to do that. You couldn't be any worse off.

the thing with a refurbished is i have read where some have soft copies of this lens and mine is sharp now, just purple:rolleyes: ..so who knows what problems i would have with a refurb or even another copy of the same lens that is new...it's the New York or New Jersey one, don't remember the address since they keep send me labels to use.they want to send it somewhere else in new york( sofco or something he called it) I think i will send a letter in to one of the big guys because even if they do eventually fix this one, it's crazy i have had to do all this...so basically they expect me to check through the exif on all my photos around the date i got the lenses back to see which ones are from that lens...course maybe most people are not as photo-fanatic as me...but that is hundreds of photos! good thing i have no life:rotfl2:!

speaking of which any with the cr2 on the end rather than jpg or tiff or whatever would be the original raw files right? but would they be already converted in the converter? would that have to have tiff on the end( or jpg) if i had converted them right?

CR2 are the RAW files. When you make changes with Canon Digitla Image Pro it saves those as a seprate file (the settings applied, not the entire image and I wanna say its an XMP) but it does not save over the RAW file. The Camera RAW plug in for Photoshop does something similar. Lightroom works a little differently, but is still non-destructive editing. IF you exported them out it would be whatever you exported out as.

thanks i thought that was the original but i also have xmp, tiff and jpg and wasn't sure about the xmp but that file was smaller than the cr2 so figured that must be "messed with" somehow:)

Jann, what you are going through with that lens really stinks and you have every right to be put out. I've experienced some really poor customer service this week as well. On the upside, I really appreciate good service when I do receive it! I hope you get a positive resolution to your problem soon. Hang in there. Jen

Sorry to hear about your continuing problems!! :scared1:

Was thinking about this and it might be a good idea TO send the camera in as well. There might be some additional issues???? I'm sure you don't want to be without for an extended length of time, but it might be the best approach.

well, i just got the lens back ???????????????????so it must have already been shipped when i talked to the guy yesterday and so far see no change whatsoever. i'm just going to get rid of it and get some other lens. they win, i give up

Bummer!! This doesn't happen with other lenses??

no, every other lens i have works fine...they all focus fine and even my cheap phoenix one has less purple than this one...it's always had a little fringing( the 28-135) but now this is really noticeable, to the point i won't use the lens in the wider end which is where i want it for... it's gotta be the lens but they can't seem to figure it out. i do think it bugs me more than others since when i posted a photo of it that wasn't cropped most on here didn't notice it...sooo i have to assume some of it is my "detail orientation" but it's still there and drives me nuts!:rotfl2: at least it's still sharp( since they fixed it time before this last one) so i don't feel guilty about selling it. i don't know what actually causes the fringing so maybe to a degree it's the nature of the lens and mine just didn't do it cause it wasn't working "right" ie according to specs. when i got it.. i am going to call the guy i talked to and just see what he has to say...

See if you can get it sent to the Irvine center, worth a shot!

That's a shame, I'm sorry to hear that.

I found one of my shots that I wanted to look really good had a little purple fringing (it was of my freebie Yashica rangefinder, which I can now leave on the shelf since I found my father's old Kodak rangefinder the other day)... just a few spots around some very contrasty lettering, black next to silver, that kind of thing.

I did a little hunting and found a site that recommended using Photoshop's "sponge" tool, which basically desatures the spot to black and white. What do you know, it works great! Generally, where you're getting purple fringing is going to be a spot with high contrast so you won't be affecting any colorful areas. You can try this trick to see if you can "save" any of the photos that you had taken before.

Anyway, I had a feeling that you'd end up getting rid of this lens sooner or later... you'd had so many problems that you'll always be looking at it askance and pixel-peeping every photo, looking for any flaws... better to move on and get a lens that won't make you break out in a cold sweat every time you mount it!
