The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD - for summer, I'm planning on staying consistent with running between my 5k this Sunday and when I start training for my 10 miler at the end of September. I'll also give my usual "strength train" answer, but somehow I never manage to keep that up

ATTQOTD - what are hills? I checked Garmin to see what the elevation gain is on the "hill" near my house that I always run downhill since I hate hill. It's only 22ft 😂 It's less than a 3% incline 🙈

ATTQOTD Summer running plans: I have a Half in July and then a 10K end of September, this is a first for me training in the summer heat, I usually just do conditioning running in the summer leading to training for the 10K. So for this half I'm running every other day with long runs mixed in and speed added every other week. Once the Half is ov

ATTQOTD Hills: Currently I don't have many options to include Hills in my workouts, I'm staying at our summer beach house, so it's flat or slightly inclined. But once I got back home, yes I do try to add a hills workout into the mix of training. Especially for the 10K September race which starts out uphill.

I'm running my first 5k for time on Sunday and I'm terrified 😂 My current unofficial PR is 26:33 during the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler last year. My race equivalency time would be 25:47. My original goal was to do it under 25, but that might be the stretch goal now, with the main goal being 25:30.

I need all the advice I can get for running a 5k. I feel like it's going to suck. Should I eat the same thing I do before a longer race?

I just raced my first one last month. It IS going to suck but in the best possible way. I just kept reminding myself it was only 3.1 miles and held on for dear life! You’ll surprise yourself, I promise. As for food, I ate my typical daily pre run oatmeal and then just a packet of fruit snacks about 15 minutes before the race. Anymore and I thought I’d feel sluggish running that fast. Good luck!

I am also in a 5K block now. 5Ks are awful. 🤣 So far I have run one 5K quite horribly and one okay. Advice:

- Yes, 5Ks are fast, but DO NOT go out too fast. The first mile or two (or 2-3K) should be hard but still relatively comfortable. If you're hurting in the first mile, you will be in deep doo-doo by mile 3. 😬
- Second the warm-up advice. Running a very easy 1-2 miles before your race will only help you. Even better if you can throw in a few strides at the end.
- Eat whatever sits well with you. You don't need to carb-load for a 5K, but you definitely don't want to be racing on an empty stomach. My go-to pre-race breakfast for any distance is yogurt with apple and granola about two hours before the race.

Pacer running has some HOKA Cliftons on sale for $99. For some colors, there seems to be only one size available, but I managed to find a pair in my size with a color that suits me.
I have had good success with the shoes and nice to pick up a pair at a discount
Thanks for the info! I ordered a pair and added one packet of GU to put the total over $100 for free shipping

Question for anyone who runs at the very end of the day, how much/what do you eat after? The vast majority of my weekday running is done after everyone in the house bed. Right now if its an easier run I will usually do a glass of milk after, for longer runs or workouts will add a small bowl of yogurt and some granola.

I'm under the impression that may not be enough calories right after, but I also don't really like the idea of eating a lot right before I go to bed.

Thank you

I don't. It's probably not the best for me, but I'll usually just wait until the morning to eat.

I tried doing that for a bit in order to run when it was cooler and I wound up too amped up to go to sleep. Which is why I now wedge runs in between work and dinner. But if I were to do it again, I think a bowl of cereal is about all I'd want or need.

I find that training in the evenings actually causes me to eat less overall. I'll grab a glass of chocolate milk afterwards, but by the time I get done with everything and am ready to eat it's usually after 9:00. Less time before bedtime means I'm not sitting around snacking as much.

It's been awhile, but I used to run in the late evenings when my kids were little too. My go to was a big glass of chocolate milk.
