The Running Thread --2025

I was curious what the fundraising minimums are so I clicked the link. Those are actually way better than I was expecting lol. My only other experience has been fundraising for the Boston Marathon in 2013, which was $4,000. I think its close to $10,000 now. There is almost zero chance I could pull that off these days lol.
The average has become $8000+ but some still have lower amounts. For example, Boston children's only requires $3500.

Here's a new one:

did an incline treadmill walk last night, and when I went to calibrate it on my garmin it wouldn't let me put in the distance, and forced me to put in a lower distance. Now, this was only like a 0.25mi difference or less between what I wanted to enter and what it *allowed* me to enter, but that's not the point. Anyone else had something like this happen?

We are three days out from a local race - the Garden Spot Village 10k and Half Marathon. We are signed up for the half along with my 24 year-old son, who will also be joining us for the Wine and Dine weekend. I am hoping he gets a POT, he is certainly able as he did his own half marathon a month ago in about 2 hours. I am thinking of trying for a personal best better than my Princess half time. I understand there is a significant hill on the course and there may be rain too. It is in Lancaster County, PA, in Amish farm countryside, so looks like a nice setting for it.

So there is also a companion race in September - the Bird-In-Hand Half Marathon. If you complete both races, you are presented with the highly coveted Road Apple Award:

Bird-In-Hand is the actual name of a town, along with Blue Ball and Intercourse makes for an interesting set of driving directions through Lancaster County.

EXCUSE ME? Faith Kipyegon is going to attempt a sub-4min mile in June?

Her PR is from 2023 and was 4:07.64.

"Nike has partnered with Kipyegon, already the world record holder in the mile and 1,500-meter run, to create a holistic system of support that optimizes every aspect of her attempt, ensuring the most ideal conditions for her moonshot." Are we going to see wind-breaks like Kipchoge used for the sub-2 project? Will the shoes be legal by international track and field standards?

DH and I have decided that it might be a good idea to invest in a treadmill. Anyone have a recommendation or a good strategy for researching options that won't break the bank?

@Disney at Heart i have bummer news. We won't be at the Dam race. We are taking an unplanned trip to ohio, leaving this weekend and hopefully coming back home on race day. My FIL needs to have a procedure done. Bert is an only child so we are going up to help out.

I am bummed as i wanted to race since i have not raced a 10k since my knee issue (ran it at MW but does not count not official time). Plan for next year.

a used sole. I got mine off marketplace.

you can see how many hours are on it when you first turn it on. they don't have a ton of extra bells and whistles (aka monitors/screens) but are generally very durable.

Definitely curious about those logistics, though.
yeah their whole "hype page" for it talks about clothing and shoes, but if they're talking optimal conditions that means it's probably gotta be early in the morning or at night (late June in Paris?!) to keep the temperature down, and there for sure has to be some wind-breaking stuff being employed.

I got a cheap one almost 10 years ago from Dick’s. I don’t put a ton of mileage on it, but I haven’t had any problems with it.

Got my proform at Costco online several years back for half what they go for. Been very good and delivery was free

Did anyone hear about the Atlanta marathon being too short and won't be certified?
Inexcusable! And so soon after Atlanta Track Club ran out of Thanksgiving Half and Triple Peach medals in November!

So sorry to hear. I was looking forward to seeing you both. Prayers for your FIL’s procedure and for travel for you and Bert.

Anyone have any recommendations on wide running shoes? Doing Dopey for the first time, which includes my first marathon. Goal would be to average about a 10 minute mile.

Hmm... I almost never "calibrate" my walking or running on the treadmill. When the activity is done, I just edit the activity in the Garmin app and change the distance to match what's on the treadmill. It updates the average pace appropriately. I'm not sure what it does to lap times, but I don't really care about that.

If what you’ve been using is working well for you, there’s no real reason to change shoes. All of the big brands offer their shoes in a wide (although generally in fewer colors….except for new balance from what I can tell) so it really comes down to what fits your individual foot well.

If you’re looking to change shoes, I recommend getting fitted at a reputable running-specialty store (fleet feet, fit2run, or similar, even a local running-focused shop) that has a good return policy.

Thank you! I was using Asics Cumulus 25 but the newer ones didn't feel the same to me. I was fitted at a Road Runner's store so have tried on different shoes. Just thought I would see what people recommend.

While there’s nothing wrong with asking for recommendations, everyone prefers different things so your best option is to go try things on yourself. For example, lots of folks love the max cushioning shoes but I find them extremely clunky and prefer shoes with less.
