The Running Thread --2025

QOTD: What's the silliest/stupidest/not due to running injury you've gotten that has kept you from running?
ATTQOTD: Original injury wasn't silly or stupid - I slept funny and aggravated my back. It happens to me occasionally, I usually just need a few days of rest.
But the silly part was ... stupid me figured "oh I won't run but I can definitely cross-train" so I went to barre class and aggravated it even more and then ended up needing to take about 2.5 weeks off from running. And this was less than 2 months before a half, so my training got cut down quite a bit.

Peachtree Questions for those of you familiar with the race.......

I see it's a lottery for non-members. Is this hard to get into? Also, I appreciate that they seed all runners (although honestly, who would race in July!)--they claim they just want a USATF 5k/10k. Assume it doesn't have to be one of the narrow list they published. I have one from BAA 5k--expect it could work.

Turns out I am going to be at Disney with my sister from Jun 27th-July 4th, and it occurred to me that I could possibly just rearrange things to fly back through Atlanta.

Peachtree has not been hard to get into since Covid took the numbers down. For a few years, everybody got in. I’m not sure about the last couple of years though. You do not have to use the few races that are “official qualifiers” as POT. We would love to see you there! It’s always a huge event!

ETA We always have our bibs mailed. Haven’t been to the Expo in years.

Sorry to hear. The "stupid" injuries can be the most frustrating. I once broke/messed up a toe in yoga kicking back out of crow pose to plank. I mean, I was glad I mastered that at least once in life, but never again!

Given that it's April Fool's Day, maybe this is a good impromptu QOTD....

(Ahem) jumping a fence, and you guys know the rest…

And then Tue on my last run, stubbed a toe on a broken bit of sidewalk. Managed not to trip, but was afraid I had torn a big toenail, plus a shockwave up my leg. Fortunately DS drove by not 10 steps later, so I hitched a ride and then iced the leg, Shouldn’t impact Sunday, but had me worried.

Ditto on all of this. And last year you could still get a bib a few weeks before the race. May or may not be the case this year.

@jmasgat like others have said it has been a lot easier to get into the last couple of years. That being said I can get you in. I get special access since we are a sponsor. I am still on the fence if i am going to do it. I am about 75% doing it. I am on call that week for work, so i cant actually take any type of weekend trip. My only hang up for not doing it is getting up early. I am like an extra day of sleeping in. Unfortunately i won't be in a early coral so i probably wont have to be up as early. The issue with that is running in the hotter part of the morning, but it is kind of like disney the PR is for fun.

I am hoping to race, with my new normal, the 10k at the Dam Run @Disney at Heart . Weather should be better and mostly flat. My running was not so good a few weeks ago, too many things hurt, but i am starting to feel better.

Is anyone thinking about walking away from Garmin after this announcement?

I was all ready to get myself a new Garmin during the Amazon spring sale and now I'm hesitant. I moved from Fitbit to Garmin about 8 years ago for better run tracking and now that I'm not really running anymore I looked into switching back to Fitbit, but Fitbit's paywall kinda soured me on a potential switch. But now Garmin is introducing a paywall and I honestly (like many people it seems) am not convinced that they won't move some of the currently free data behind the paywall so now I'm not as excited about Garmin. I'm kinda torn on what to do.

Update on this:
Garmin got me with the Vivoactive 6. I don't love that I'm giving them money right after this announcement but it's just so pretty...

I've been paying attention to what data I actually use from my Garmin and (right now at least) it's mostly basic stuff - activity tracking, steps, hydration, sleep, and running/walking distance. I can't imagine Garmin would put any of those behind the paywall. I'm imagining this will change if/when I start running/training again but I'll figure out what to do when we get there. Hopefully they'll keep most/all training metrics free but we'll see how things change as the Connect+ product evolves.

@Disney at Heart I'm sorry but will not make the Dam Run this year liked I hoped to. Have to head accross the pond for work and unfortunately that race weekend is the only time that works for me. One year I will make it!

I had really hoped to make the trip down for the Dam Run to be my first race back. Unfortunately, things are moving much more slowly than I had hoped, so I’m going to have to miss it, too. Hope you guys have a great race! I’ll make it one of these years.

Garmin DSW was a threshold run today and I PR’d my mile and 5k! WHAT???? Great comeback from my embarrassing fall a few weeks ago! I have a 5k in a couple of weeks I decided to race so we’ll see if I can beat today’s time with course overage.
Hey congrats !! Don't be embarrassed I have fallen more times than I care to recall. Once when running the Rock n Roll Liverpool Marathon I was running with the 2HR 30 pace group fell and skinned my knee and hand. Later on in the last mile I tripped again and did a comedy stumble and after abut 3 lunges forward managed to regain my balance, everyone cheered cos I managed to stay on my feet 🙈

Thanks! Hoping it holds for my race. My fall was similar to your last mile but the lunges I made were unsuccessful, made worse by the guy on his bike right behind me who witnessed it. 😂 Glad you were able to salvage your race!

I'm doing a 10k tomorrow and had a stress dream last night, which leads me to a QOTD: how many of y'all have stress dreams about races, and what are some of the craziest ones you've had?

ATTQOTD: Mine usually involve some variation of oversleeping. Especially the night before, where I then wake up and realize it's still too early to wake up, but I'm too anxious to go back to sleep. :P I've also dreamt I got lost on the course. Last night's involved me having the wrong pair of shoes (Skechers go-walks), carrying my Stanley instead of my handheld, and forgetting my AirPods. An overall tragedy!

ATTQOTD: No stress dreams - but I totally get the worry about oversleeping - that hits me for every rD race and it results in either not being able to fall asleep or not being able to stay asleep. It used to stress me out more - I've learned to accept it and not try to go to bed until I'm tired.
