The Running Thread --2025

ATTQOTD: I'm looking forward to it. More daylight in the evening means I'll actually have time to get to trails to run after work and finish my run before sunset. Currently with the earlier sunsets I have to run around my neighborhood and that partly with my knucklelights and in the dark. Although I do dislike the actual loss of one hour of sleep that night - DH and I plan to go to bed one hour early Saturday night so we get the same amount of sleep.

Part of the issue that some folks have with this, especially if you live in the Eastern US time zone is that the time zone is WAY too big....it was stretched out east-to-west when it was created because everyone "wanted" to be in that zone. So now it runs from Maine in the east to include all of Michigan in the west, which is over 20 degrees of longitude, while time zones should span about 15 degrees of longitude. Just saying.

This leads nicely into a QOTD:

Spring Daylight Savings Time Change. Are you excited for it, or dreading it?

ATTQOTD: Also not an early riser but I LOVE having sunlight at the end of the day. The seasonal depression was STRONG this year with a particularly cold and snowy winter so I need every minute of sunlight I can get, as far into the night as I can get it.

Add me to the happy to spring forward crowd. I’m up early enough that it’s almost always dark no matter the month but I really enjoy that evening daylight wether it’s just relaxing in my back yard or working a little bit longer on a project.

ATTQOTD:
I’m neutral as well. Will not enjoy my internal clock being all messed up initially, but def WILL enjoy some extra light at the end of each day. And I like doing summer runs in the early morning DARK before it gets too hot. I feel EXTRA accomplished finishing up my runs as the sun is rising and most people are still in bed.

ATTQOTD: I don't enjoy the transition itself, but I very much appreciate it staying lighter longer into the evening. It's actually the fall transition that affects me much more. The combination of getting dark earlier along with decreasing temperatures is really demoralizing to my late year running. I've got a 3-faceted philosophy I adhere to for running. The three facets are cold, dark and raining. I'll run in any two of the three, but combine them all and I'm out.

Being retired, DST doesn’t make too much difference. I can still sleep/wake at the same time of sunrise/sunset. I prefer more daylight at the end of my day.
I add a fourth facet to @camaker’s list: wind. Lately we’ve had several cold mornings (30’s) with up to 30-35 mph wind gusts. We’ve moved two runs from 6.5 miles on the dam to 4.5 in our neighborhood this week to keep from being blown into the lake! Any mixture of 2/4 facets makes me rethink where/how far I run!

THIS! What is with this incessant wind!? I feel like it’s been either cold or windy or BOTH for too long!

Couple of RD things:

- They just posted a teaser for virtual runs, likely the summer series. Teaser included clips of Pirates, Jungle Cruise, and BTMM.
- I know MW is the big thing and registration is Tuesday so it's going to be the priority but can we get some info on the winter DL weekend? I'll take an announcement of dates, they can do the themes later, but I need SOMETHING here lol.

ATTQOTD: Just pick one and stick with it. It doesn't reall impact me since I will still be up and getting out the door most mornings when it's still dark. So I would just prefer not to have to deal with this sillyness twice a year.
This is the real answer, just stop changing the damn time and we'll all adjust to whatever for the rest of our lives

ATTQOTD: I love the end of daylight savings mainly because it occurs the night before the Wine and Dine half marathon and I get an extra hour of sleep
Except not this year 🫤

This worries me for the future of DL races. I know they've said it IS happening, but this feels an awful lot like the Light Side weekend before they finally just canceled it. I hope they aren't fighting with Anaheim again and the delay is simply due to potential construction plans or something, but a stalled DL race announcement is historically not a good sign.

Hopefully they're just trying to settle on the right weekend

ATTQOTD: I lived in Tucson as a kid and Arizona does not observe Daylight Savings. I was so confused when we moved because I didn’t understand it and I was ready for lunch by 10:30am.

I love the longer days but not the couple of days after the time change. I’m with a lot of people here, pick one and stick with it. If that’s not going to change I don’t want to hear this state or that state is considering making the change. Just make the change already and shut up.

Race report - TOKYO MARATHON (a brief recap!)

I am in pursuit of the 6 star medal, and Tokyo was #5 for me. I got my entry through a tour group that does marathons around the world (also how I got into London and Berlin).
Tokyo itself is a really cool city. The 14 hour flight + the 14 hour time change really kicked my butt though - I never adjusted ,waking up around 2 am every night and tossing and turning. The mattresses in Japan are also very firm!
The expo was insane but the line for bib pickup moved smoothly. I didn't even attempt to enter the war zone that was the official race merch area, but was able to pick up some smaller things from another booth.
The Tokyo marathon is SUPER strict about things - the main issue being that they don't allow you to carry your own hydration. Not kidding - no handhelds, no racebelt, no hydration vest. I usually run with Tailwind, and have a sensitive GI, so I did train with their on course drink (Pocari Sweat) and didn't have any issues. Race day was pretty warm - low 50's at the start but pushing 70 by late morning. The hydration stops were every couple of miles, and things were going ok, until I hit around mile 18 and I started noticing that some of the tables had NO water and/or cups - but I was still able to find another table down the line to grab something. I ran about a 4:40 and later learned that people behind me had absolultely NOTHING to drink for the last 8 miles!! Unbelieveable for a world major!
At the finish - I was handed one tiny mini bottle of water and told I could only have one, and then there was NO food except for a small piece of cheese. I could not believe it!
Tokyo is also SUPER strict about cut offs - they make the balloon ladies look like your best friends - and so many people were swept.
I did get a really nice poncho at the finish, and the volunteers were AMAZING. You could tell they felt awful about running out of water.
I did celebrate at Tokyo Disney after - the weather was awful (cold and rainy) but those parks are incredible.
Overall - Japan is an incredible place, with wonderful people, but the Tokyo marathon needs to get it's act together. Hoping that Abbott steps in to force them to make some positive changes (Abbott runs the 6 star program).

That’s crazy. I saw some videos of the empty water tables and can’t believe there haven’t been more stories about medical issues due to dehydration. If you don’t allow personal hydration, you can’t run out of water!
