The Running Thread --2025

Don’t look at me to talk you out of it -that’s the route I’m taking. Honestly the package wasn’t much more than doing the race and hotels anyway.
Logically we already have a trip to Brazil in September, then Disney in December and for Marathon Weekend. Do I really need to add another one?

I'll talk to my husband when I get home, and if the packages are still available, I'll take it as my sign to do it!

Rejected by both the primary and the NYRR 2nd chance drawing.

To second @marty3d, I looked up the international travel packages out of curiosity and MAN are they cheap. Seriously, bib and hotel that way is equal to what you'd be paying anyway, and significantly less than you'd pay for a charity bib.

Another rejection over here. I said I was letting the lottery gods decide my fate this year, but now I'm invested and considering one of the international tour operators...

Someone needs to talk some sense into me.
I had won the lottery for 2020 but by 2023 DH wanted to join so we ended up with ITO to get him a bib. It was a great package for us, especially since it included the bus home to/from the NYC hotel and to the race start. Plus breakfast was also included and the diner was opened 24h.

Sounds like I need to graduate from just pretending I'm Canadian when I travel...

Too late now, but I just sold property up in Canada. Now I'm wondering what proof the travel agency would've needed for the Canadian packages. 🤔

The lengths we go to put ourselves through 26.2 miles of "fun"!
Canadian Mailing address and a Canadian credit card. That’s all I needed. They didn’t ask for any other proof. Though that Canadian based card seems key because I wasn’t able to use my US Amex that I usually use for USD purchases. Disney does the same for the Canadian resident discounts - need a Canadian cc.

Someone just shared this with me: a race series in the national parks! Does everyone else already know about this?
I am sooooo into destination running now [holds thumb over his punch card showing exactly 2 destinations....], and doubt that I'll get to do even one or two of these, but I love the idea. That said, I have told the DW that I'd like to do more destination runs, especially in places we'd like to visit anyway. She rolled her eyes and harrumphed, so I'll take that as support for the idea....

These look amazing !!

For those wanting to run NYC, don't forget about the Virtual Marathon Guaranteed Entry option. They will announce the signup date for that usually in early June. It is essentially another lottery and if you win a spot, you will need to run a marathon during their designated dates this year, to earn entry into NYC next year.

This is how I got in after being denied in the general lottery multiple times. I snagged a spot in June of 2023 and ran the Indy Monumental marathon in the fall of 2023, which I picked because it fell within their designated dates, and I earned entry into NYC for 2024. They have you link your Strava account to your NYRR account at signup, so that's what they use for proof.

I heard they got rid of that option this year, but could have been bad intel.

I don't think they got rid of it, they just changed how you enter. When I signed up, it was like signing up for a runDisney race, where everyone got online at noon on a certain date and tried to get a spot. Now I think it's handled like the lottery and not first-come, first-serve.

Oh okay thanks, good to know. I'll definitely look into that option then.

Yeah, since people know about it now it’s hard to enter. Last year I would say it went faster than a runDisney race. I was not successful.

They just sent an email (or social media post??) saying that there are three more ways to enter, and it did not list the virtual option so TBD if it comes back this year.

That could also be because you can't get into this year's marathon with this year's virtual option - it's for the following year.

I did the lottery for the virtual + guaranteed entry last year but didn't get in. 😕
