The Running Thread --2025

However, anyone familiar with this…

It’s been a while since I’ve been there and this may fit the calendar and be a great intro to ultras. Seems like it’s been around a while so hopefully well organized, just wondering if anyone has run any distance there or is planning to.

I have! I did it in 2023 although only the 10K distance.

It seemed to be extremely well-organized all around and, yes, it seems like an awesome intro to ultras. The bulk of the 10K course - at least first thing in the morning - was shaded and extremely pleasant to run on and the aid stations seemed plentiful and well-stocked.

The one thing to know is that it sells out stupid fast. The 10K for this year is already sold out - unfortunately for me since I was thinking about doing it again, but hadn't signed up because I wasn't sure my plans were for the summer. However, if the race that you want to do happens to sell out, ask on their Facebook page as they do allow bibs to be sold and transferred. That's how I got my bib in 2023.

Then my boss, who was from Pittsburgh complained about the lack of insulation in older buildings. That was a light bulb moment for me. Yes, my parents’ house in Boston would be so cozy in the winter!
this is precisely why everyone in Texas had burst pipes during the winter storm in 2021. the pipes have zero insulation so when temps dropped way below freezing for almost a week and power went out for multiple days...

Feels Like was 30º for my run last night and DAMP: misty air and 95% humidity… I realized I was underdressed 2 miles in, as I was getting colder with each mile, not warmer. Thermal tights may as well have been nonexistent- the cold wind went right through them! Ditto for the Buff on my face. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be our coldest morning and I’m seriously considering the treadmill because I’m so sick of being cold and dealing with the hives that come with that… #Floridianwhine

(I’m also sick of all the layering - not just clothes: trying to keep some of the cold out of my home, I’ve got plastic UV roller shades pulled down, woven blinds down over that, thick curtain liners over that, and curtains over that. Four layers of window dressing and it’s still cold everywhere but right where heat comes out of the vents!)

Most of my (west-central FL) pipes are in my attic or interior walls, so insulated enough to not be a problem, but there’s one in an exterior wall and the racket it makes when I send hot water through it when it’s cold! THUMP, THUMP, THUMP. We rarely drop below freezing, and only stay there a couple hours when we do, but I let that sink drip on those nights, just in case. We also used to get rolling blackouts pretty regularly when temps dropped, but Duke Energy seems to have improved the grid and I’ve only had a little flickering in recent years.

Yes, and the external pipes are maybe a foot below the surface, while cold weather states put them six feet or more below the surface with insulation.

I’m running in my first half at princess soon. I’m a 45 year old in probably average shape. So over the last 2 months I’ve been getting some uncomfortableness in my left knee at around 5-7km on my runs. This started around the time it has gotten colder up here in the north. I always stopped running when this happened as when I walk it doesn’t flair up.

I was recently on a cruise and did a run on the jogging track and had no issues. Would this be a cold weather thing? Should I just take it easy till the princess half? Thought maybe KT tape would help but I don’t have a clue on what it is or how to tape it. I won’t have anytime to see my doctor as he is full till March

I am certainly no expert - been running for about 1.5 years and just did the Dopey Challenge with my wife and can relate my experience: We also did the Springtime Surprise challenge and the Wine and Dine Challenge. During the Wine and Dine and the long training runs to prepare for the Dopey Challenge, my knees (especially my left knee) began to hurt after about 7-8 miles. I started doing some PT exercises every day which seemed to help. But the biggest help was after running the 5k and 10k at the Dopey Challenge, we went back to the expo and I bought a new pair of shoes which really made a difference - we completed the Half marathon and most of the Marathon and I had no knee pain. The shoes I got are the ASICS Novablast 5, which are very soft, comfortable and very different from the shoes I had been using.

It might also be the running surface on the cruise may have been softer.

edit: my knee pain was in the front, just below kneecap. I interpreted that to be from the impact of each step.

Like @rick1zoo2 said, first thing would be to check how old/how many miles are on your shoes. That could be the answer.
How long was your run on the cruise? Did you run far enough to the point that your knee usually hurts?
I had something similar happen several years ago. My knee would start to hurt about mile 5, but wouldn’t hurt at all when I walked. I went to a sports chiropractor for a few weeks. She did some dry needling and scraping, but nothing for a while seemed to work. One week I had a half marathon where my knee hurt pretty badly, and I had to run/walk as I could to the finish (I was a continuous runner at that time). I had a half marathon the following week also, and I was worried about it. That week (in between races) she tried several new things. She dry needled and scraped in a new areas, did some cold laser therapy, and put on kinesiology tape. That next half marathon - no pain. It was so weird! From that point on for a while I taped my leg and I was pretty much good to go.
My pain was kind of on the outside, but a little on the back of my knee, I think. She taped it like a half moon around the outside of my knee cap and also a strip that started an inch or two below the back of my knee, and then went over the ligament (tendon??) on the back of my leg (the one on the outside) and continued about halfway up the back of my thigh. I don’t remember the stretch amounts now.
I’m not sure if that will help you. But I’ve also heard to put the tape where it hurts. I can add a picture if you’d like, but your pain may be different than mine.

Are you able to get an appointment with a PT? My previous knee issues have been a result of my quads and my hips, respectively. Basically, often pain in your knee comes from a weakness or imbalance elsewhere, but it's hard to know where without a professional looking at it.

My inspiration:

Just 12 days after breaking her (Erika10021) wrist between mile 19-20 of the Marathon doing the Dopey Challenge, we went out for our first run. She got the go ahead to run from the doctor on Tuesday, but today was the first day that the temperature got above 20.

Only four weeks to go until the Princess Challenge…
The sweetest thing anyone has ever said about me!! Thank you!!

Ya mine is more on the outside and a bit towards the knee cap. I wouldn't even call it pain but it just felt uncomfortable. I've got some new Endorphine Elite 2's coming but its not looking like they will get to me in time before princess. I don't have a ton of miles on my winter ones, but they definitely aren't the same cushioning as my summer pair.

Ya this sounds like it is a similar pain and that KT tape should help. Do you know if people at the medical tent will tape your knee for you, or is this something I will have to learn in the next month. I would imagine there are youtube videos out there, but as suggested I probably should just go to physio and get them to teach me.

Yeah, going to a PT would probably be the best thing. KT Tape usually has a booth at the expo and will tape you. I’m not sure about the medical tents.

You can only KT tape for so long (not that long!) in roughly the same places and your skin will start getting upset and peeling off. Ask me how I know. (it was also around the knee area) So use it sparingly.

Have not done it, but the 50k has only about ~1000 ft elevation gain, which is definitely "easy" in terms of the vert for such a distance. I hiked on some of those trails a decade or so ago, and I remember them being mostly packed dirt and not too rocky or rooty, which would also put it on an easier level for the distance.

From the sublime to the ridiculous (although some might say vice versa), I went from running outside in subzero temp to joining my DH for his mall walk--excuse me, his "Somerset Collection" walk (When your stores include Jimmy Choo, Hermes, Louboutin, Gucci, Chanel, etc, et$$$c you call yourself a "collection"). He's trying to stay active while he deals with an A Fib situation.

I had this overwhelming urge to yell "But I'm a runner!" to all the seniors walking (even though, technically, I am one of them). More power to everyone who gets out there, but I felt weird.

Yes, and the external pipes are maybe a foot below the surface, while cold weather states put them six feet or more below the surface with insulation.
So many builders install cabinets and tubs before the sheetrock. And right before the sheetrock is the insulation installation. So many houses, like the one I'm in, have little or no insulation behind the tub, shower stall, or cabinets. Usually not that big of a deal, but with temps in the 20s, I can feel the cold coming out of the kitchen cabinets and from around the dishwasher. So if you have a way to get behind things and drop in some insulation or spray foam, it'll make a difference.
Oh, and the other night when the wind was blowing, and I realized I was feeling a cool breeze. Turns out one of the den windows wasn't firmly seated and latched, allowing cold air to come in. Grrrrr.

It was in the mid 40s today, and I got my walk in, but it was still not fun when the wind was blowing. That ground hog better keep it to himself if he sees anything....

KT tape is not magic. It is tape and it will not fix anything. To quote Wikipedia: “No convincing scientific evidence indicates that such products provide any demonstrable benefit in excess of a placebo, with some declaring it a pseudoscientific treatment.”

KT tape settled a lawsuit in 2017 for untrue and misleading statements. I was not shocked to learn that it was first marketed by a chiropractor in the 1970s, and has no evidence-based research to support its claims. To the contrary:

“the journal BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation which examined the effectiveness of different colors of kinesiology tape, as well as reexamining general effectiveness of kinesiology tape against a placebo. Describing the conclusions of the study, they write: Nothing mattered. Tape color didn't matter. Color preference didn't matter. "Proper" placement of KT with tension didn't matter. No effect on performance, strength, or function was found in any experimental round compared to the control round for any of the subjects”
