The Running Thread--2024

AQOTD:

I’m currently frustrated by the size creep in men’s clothing. Right now most running shorts (e.g. Nike) have small sizes at a waist of 30-32”, medium 32-35”, and large at 35-38”. I’m technically a small, where in the past that same size was a large. Getting the right fit is tough because the clothing manufacturers I guess assume the people wearing that size have no butt.

If you’re looking for an old-school mesh running short that has smaller sizes, I’d recommend the Tracksmith Van Cortlandt. It’s a 4” short made out of 2:09 Mesh, which is anti-microbial so it doesn’t stink.

It’s like the designers are shocked athletes have butts. I bought UA leggings that were designed by Lindsey Vonn and I thought “finally a woman with a butt and thighs is designing clothing for women with butts and thighs!”

I hope someone has ideas for you. I gave up on that style of shorts years ago. I see a lot of elite runners in split shorts these days. I wonder if those are less likely to bunch? My thighs demand fabric between them so I’ve never given them a try.
The one pair I’ve tried that does work well enough for short runs is a split short, so your theory may be right!
Baleaf 5 inch running shorts on Amazon work well for me.
I LOVE Baleaf’s 5” shorts for non-running! Alas, they wind up being too much on my short legs for running, though. I feel like I need to find some hybrid 3” inseam with, like, 5” outer sides lol!

THANK you for confirming the size creep thing! Though I’m annoyed that it’s happening in men’s clothing, too, now. Once upon a time at the exact same height and weight, I wore a women’s 6. Today that’s a 0?! It’s insane. But those Tracksmith shorts look nearly identical to what I once wore and loved, so that’s worth a look - thanks!
Looks like you're going to have to check out the kids' department :duck:
My DS age 24 has a similar problem, it's hard to find pants for even a 28-29" waist these days. When it's not athletic wear, you can at least cinch a 30" with a belt.
That’s actually a great idea - thank you! My running tops are all from Target’s girls department, so I have no shame there. :rotfl: But I hadn’t thought about looking at boy’s shorts. And yep, my 22yo son has the same problem with jeans - and the same belt solution. I’ve also taught him the fine art of an initial wash in hot after with a high heat dry for anything cotton. ::yes::

That and petites. Like, does Des Linden have all her Brooks clothing custom made to her measurements? Because I assure you nothing they’ll sell to me is made to fit a 5’ tall woman. :rotfl:

@DopeyBadger I feel silly that I did not look through the entirety of the Jack Daniels' 5K training plan before starting out this block. It's the same attitude as starting to bake or cook without reading through the entire recipe. I have learned that you should always read through the entire recipe before you begin the actual process. Same here.

I was rather surprised that Phase III has two hard workouts on back-to-back days. Is it me or is that a really bad idea because you're not giving your body any time to recover from the hard sessions? In my humble opinion, it's even more important for the Masters runner (God, I hate that term!). Perhaps this is appropriate for a teenage cross country athlete, but it seems like a recipe for getting injured. What are your thoughts?

I just tried to find the passage in the book but didn’t. My recollection was that it was about DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). Some athletes perform better in training/racing with a workout that day prior and others do not. This is a personal physiological thing you’ll have to determine for yourself. But personally I added in east days between these hard bouts when I ran through the plan. But when I did the Ironman training cycle the pro plan I followed had multiple morning/evening back to back hards and day/day hards. Both were accomplishable, but hard on the body. When I write Daniels esqu plans for others, I typically add in 1-2 easy day between hard bouts.

I use Lululemon hotty hot.
AQOFD - agreed lululemon hotty hot and track that shorts are both good options.

I normally waer a 4 in lululemon tights and pants but choose a 6 in the shorts so that they have a little more space in the thigh.

As far as size creep goes it is WAY worse in the US market vs the canadian market. Its still bad though. It is driven by the fashion industry standards and unrealistic beauty standards that say you need to be a small size to be beautiful. So fashion companies make the "number" on the tag smaller to make us "feel" like we fit the beauty standards better. Dumb and annoying especially if you are small framed or petite.

This is the section of Phase III that I was referencing. Personally, I plan on having a rest day and an easy day in between the two speed sessions. For Phase II, I’m doing a speed session on Monday, rest day on Tuesday, easy run on Wednesday and the second speed session on Thursday.

Sponsored runners get shoes and gear tailored to their bodies and whims. Parker Valby just won the NCAA title in the 10k at 30:50 running in Vaporfly spikes that Nike made special for her.

Happy Fathers Day!
What can I say about this race? We know it, we love it, and bike rentals had the medals…

No rumors of a 5K at the new island but they are working on a bike path so it’s definitely possible.
Island to island challenge anyone?

So fun! We are doing our first Disney cruise in almost 6 years in 2025. Totally looking forward to running this again!

It’s completely changed, and not really a race anymore. You used to be the first off the boat, had a bib, there was a start/finish line, and it was an actual organized race. Now you walk up the bike rental place and tell them you did it, and they hand you a medal. It’s still incredibly hot and humid though, so that hasn’t changed!

Re: the "masters" stuff. As someone going into order age less than gracefully, I'm a little annoyed at what is classified as "masters", but I guess it is better than "Geritol Division" or "Old Farts"...

I did a 10K with my son on Saturday morning, and he was amazed to see runners significantly older than I am. Checking the results, there was a 73 year old that finished in 57 minutes, or 4 minutes faster than 58 year old me! And an 82 year old that finished 1:11:09! As I've told him, our bodies are for the most part use-it-or-lose-it, so stay active. Longer writeup will go in the training journal.

Shorts: I have a mix of womens and mens tights to wear under my running shorts. I have large muscular thighs and get serious, painful chub-rub without them. I've used the barrier gels and sticks, but a physical barrier seems to be the best option, especially for longer runs. The mix of mens and womens was due to casting about for what worked and that had side pockets for my phone (no more waist belt or arm pouch). FWIW, I will still use my running belt on a full marathon just for all the gels, sunscreen, etc that won't all fit in pockets.

Here's what I've come up with on Amazon and that I have bought and use:
Running shorts: Mier Men's training shorts, 5". Love these because they have an option for zippered pockets to keep stuff from falling out. Both left and right pockets are zippered, and IIRC, there is a small zippered pocket in the back of the waistband. I use that for things like a key fob so that it isn't swinging around in a side pocket. These are now my go-to shorts for nearly everything (not just for running) because of that. They don't have a lining, which to me is good since I always wear something under them.
Tights:
Lovesoft Women's workout cycling running yoga shorts with side pockets. These are made of a very thick material, so it holds everything snugly. For my wide beam, size 2XL seems to work, and I have to get the longer length inseam to make sure they go down my leg past the rub area. The only downside (for me) is that I could do without the higher waist since that doesn't work so well with my still-too-large gut, but they otherwise work great. I will use them for maintenance runs to save wear and tear on the Sanke shorts.
Sanke Mens Compression running shorts with phone pocket, 3 pack. Search for that on Amazon and in the picture you'll see "PRO" in large letters on the waistband. Love these! They aren't too thick, have a side pocket on both sides, a mens waist, and long enough inseam to do the job. If I'm going to spend the day walking around, I'll be wearing these under my shorts, as they are all-day comfortable. I need to order more of them (and just did). $18.99 for a 3-pack.

It is my finished two weeks of running update. I was worried because last time i tried i did not make it past run 6. I am ready to do run 7 tomorrow. I think I will have to keep my 1 run 2 walk interval though. I noticed on Thursday my knee was more sore than it had been, but saturday was ok. I will add another interval though. I will be up to 10 intervals so 10 minutes of running. I see PT next week. I was hoping to increase run time after that but i might need to just keep adding an interval. it is progress.

The midwest is having a heatwave. On a whim, I hopped onto the costo website to see if liquid IV was "on sale" and it IS! $8 off per pack (so the usual discount) but it's only today and tomorrow??? Not sure if it'll be on sale longer in stores, but I'm definitely buying a couple of packs since DS2 is looking at a pretty hefty summer running plan (starting at 34mi and working up to 55mi weeks), DS1 is doing a lot of umpiring, and I'm going to get back to running.

Also, the "firecracker" flavor is my new favorite. Basically a cherry-lime. But not the gross "golden cherry."

Glad to hear your review of the firecracker - my order just arrived and I haven’t tried it yet - but had high hopes!!

Short rec - love my Oiselle long rogas!! Loose running feel but don’t ride up, have a pocket, etc.

So, the weirdest thing has happened to me. I could swear that I signed up for a 5K this coming Saturday. I added it to my race spreadsheet, my training plan, my phone calendar, and my upcoming races countdowns app. I even bought a new Sparkle skirt for it!

But I have no record of actually signing up. No registration email, no transaction record, nothing. When I google the race, it comes up on all sorts of websites, but when I click the links on those sites to go to the page for this specific race, the page is not found, and the organizing company isn’t showing it on any of their socials.

So I guess I’m not running a 5K on Saturday, which is a bummer, because there was supposed to be ice cream and bomb ops, and American flags handed out at the 3 mile mark so everyone finished carrying a little flag 😭😭

So the no nicotine has affected my sleep the way it did last year, which is great for running earlier in the day, although I would have liked to sleep passed 1:57 this morning

I am kind of let down, though, that there will be no precipitation with this morning’s cold front…

What some of us would give for that temp right now!

To everyone who gets out there (safely) to get their workout done, I dedicate this piece of cold juicy watermelon. It was T+D of 145 and rising before 7 am this morning for my run --the "coolest" it will be all day.

You're unfortunately preaching to the choir. When I went out for my speed workout yesterday morning at 5:30 it was T+D of 148. I looked at my watch and it actually reads "Oppressive" for the dew point.
