The Running Thread--2024

I thought that this might amuse the Garmin users and potentially annoy the Apple users, however I always adhere to the motto of "To each their own." After too much time wasted researching the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and comparing it to the Forerunner 965 and then considering going over to Coros, I went to the Apple Store on Saturday to try on the AWU2 and ask some questions about it. Needless to say, I was disappointed but not surprised that the initial sales associate hardly knew anything about the technical details for this product. Nevertheless, she asked for help from an associate who is a runDisney runner himself who knew about the watch. When I started telling him about my needs for a running watch, he stopped me and told me that he would recommend against the AWU2 and showed me his Garmin Forerunner 955. I was rather dumbfounded that an Apple representative was slamming their own product!

I used to work at the Apple Store and they train for customer service above all else. If a product isn't a match for a customer, DO NOT sell it to them. If you have knowledge of a better alternative, even a competitor, give them the info they need. That was ingrained in us from day one. So this doesn't shock me at all, though if he actually slammed the AW I'd be surprised. We definitely were told to discuss their needs and solutions, framing the Apple option(s) as fitting a need for someone else or another time.

Thats so interesting. I am currently deciding between updating my apple watch to the ultra 2 or becoming a two watch tan line runner with a coros and apple watch on each wrist (I like having the apple watch for communication while out on runs) I'm planning on stopping by the apple store at some point to see it so will be interesting to see what their response is.

QOTD: As I just wrapped up my spring training block with a very warm 5K, I started thinking about the random things I do before every race. I'm not talking about the obvious things, like eating a pre-race dinner and breakfast that you're used to or hydrating or laying your clothes out the night before. I mean the kinds of things you didn't intend to become habits but now are. What are your weird pre-race rituals?

ATTQOTD: Before every time I race, I:
  • paint my nails
  • do this one stretching/yoga/Pilates video the night before
  • don't drink alcohol
  • plan to go to bed early and then don't (this is less a ritual and more perpetual poor planning 😂)

Attqotd: As an introvert, just previous to a race, I will mill about awkwardly while listening to music, then attempt to strike up a conversation with a stranger and give up when I realize that they also do not care to socialize.

I don’t think anything I do the night before is anything different or weird. Or even superstitious. Set out my gear, and try to sleep. Back in high school I had some more routine pre-game/match, but that was mostly so i didn’t throw up on the field/mat

FWIW, the AWU2 is a great Apple Watch. However, if you want a running watch first and smartwatch second, you’d likely do best with a Coros or a Garmin. I personally like the buttons available on the Garmin.

ATTQOTD: I have a foam roller + stretching routine, but I do it before and after every run, so I’m not sure it qualifies. The only special thing I can think of for race day is re-tying my shoes. For years now, shoe makers have made laces stretchier and stretchier and I always end up needing to tighten them up after doing the rD Big Walk from my car to the start. I don’t even bother trying to tie them tightly when I first put them on, and don’t bother with the double-knot, because I know I’ll need to re-tie them in a couple hours, anyway.

Maybe not-so-weird, but I pin my bib to my race top the night before. (Put on the shirt, pin the bib [because fabric stretches], take shirt off.) There's no forgetting it that way, because I am the queen of going back into the house/room 2 or 3x for things I forgot.

ATTQOTD: I lay out everything I'm giong to need for the race. My full outfit is out, with my bib pinned to my shirt, fuel and inhaler are in my running belt, things all the way down to the headband I'm wearing. I don't want to forget anything. I always have a dream or two before big races that I forgot something. I also make sure my Garmin and headphones are fully charged.

ATTQOTD: I will pin and re-pin my bib about a hundred times because it has to be perfectly straight!! This psycho behavior always surprises my friends. I'm normally a really easy-going person, but for whatever reason, a crooked bib is absolutely unacceptable on race morning! :rotfl:
I am so bad at pinning the bib onto my shirt. Thank god my wife helps me. EVERY time that I have raced without her being there, it was crooked to some extent no matter what I do. At this point, I have basically given up on having a straight bib...yet, I still try to re-pin it in an attempt at getting it straight.

Can I ask for some help from the Garmin runners with creating a workout. I was able to create a relatively simple repeat workout, but I cannot figure out how to do a repeat with multiple runs within each repeat (if that makes sense at all):

2E + 4 sets of (200 R + 200 jg +200 R + 200 R + 200 jg +400 R + 400 jg) + 2E.

UPDATE: Never mind. I was finally able to figure it out. It was not straightforward, but easy to do.

Not sure what you figured out for a solution, but I'll make a comment....
Did you program the runs as "run" and the jogs as "recovery"?
I find that even if I add the line of more specific directions to myself in the workout on the app, once I'm actually executing the workout on the watch it only tells me the main direction. So I would want to program it as 200 Run with Note: Sprint, then 200 Run with Note: Jog, but if I did that I'd only see 200 Run, 200 Run and I would have to know which effort I was supposed to be on.

I started by adding a Repeat of 4 Times with my first interval of 200 R + 200 jg/Recover. Then, I clicked on "Add Step" to integrate the remaining 200 R + 200 jg and the 400 R + 400 jg. So, I clicked "Add Step" and changed the distance to km with .20 and set my target pace. If you press and hold down the "Run," you can move it into the border of the Repeat. I did that again and changed the step type to Recover. Then, I did that two more times to add in the 400 R and 400 Recover. I hope that this makes sense.

I always had trouble creating structured workouts in the Garmin environment so I have switched to using TrainingPeaks to do it and then they automatically snyc into the Garmin environment (assuming you give TrainingPeaks permission to sync of course). I subscribe to TrainingPeaks but think that feature is still available on the free version. Sounds like you were able solve the problem but something to consider for the future if you keep having issues.

For me, because the R interval is short, I don't use the GPS. So instead of programming it around distance, I'd program it around time and then use the lap button to denote early finishes. For example,

In the above workout, I'm doing 5 x (30 + rest + 30 + rest + 120 + rest). But let's assume my actual start/finish lap goal was more like 25-28.0 seconds. So then when I start my interval, I'd hit the lap button. Then once I hit my predetermined finish, then I'll hit the lap button to stop the rep. This occurs before the 30 seconds are up because I've hit it in 25 seconds. Then I jog back to the start to do the next rep and repeat.

Alternatively, you can just set everything to lap button press and just start/stop and ignore any time presets.

Lastly, you could set everything to a pre-determined time length (say 30 and 120 seconds) and just run fast from the same start line for that duration period and then compare where you finish. This option makes it less comparable post run on an interval to interval basis.
