The Running Thread - 2021

November 2021 totals
Distance: 152.6km (95mi)
Average pace: 6m43s/km (10:45/mi)
YTD: 2060km on 2021km… Challenge completed 🥳
LIIFT 4 workouts: 10

November marked the beginning of the off-season with a plan focused on reintroducing weight training and on some running. We built in enough flexibility to account for inclement weather and holidays celebrations. I am grateful that Winter arrived suddenly to give us some enjoyable runs ❄️627397

November miles:

Running - 108.4
Avg pace - 9'23"/mile
Walking - 152.6

The downside - with Wine and Dine recovery and a Thanksgiving vacation, the running miles were down a little the past month.
The upside - with Wine and Dine and a Thanksgiving vacation, somewhere around 120 combined run/walk miles were at WDW.

Looking forward to a great month and marathon weekend.

November started out with the return of races at Disney with the Wine & Dine Challenge. I loved the villains theming and thought RunDisney did a fantastic job running a smooth race weekend despite the long layoff.

After W&D, it was back to Dopey Training. I always struggle a bit this time of year as the change in time and season leads to progressively colder runs in the dark. Nothing to do but push through it until it becomes normalized, though. I missed one run due to discomfort in my knee, but fortunately that little break was all it needed to right itself. The combination of work and holiday hit my walking miles hard, though.

Now it’s on to the final push to Dopey!

November Training Summary
Running Miles: 163.06
Running Time: 27:29:36
Average Pace: 10:10/mi
Average HR: 143/min

Extras:
Walking Miles: 58.93
Rolling 12mo Running Miles: 2,013.26

November Running:
Distance: 101.8 mi
Average pace: 11:08/mi

This included my marathon and then time off after my marathon. Was up & at em this morning to start training, such as it is, for Goofy. I won't be at peak performance for me but that's very ok. This month will be a challenge fitting much running in.

November Running

Miles: 109
Time: 18:33:00
Average HR: 143
Average Pace: 10:17/mile

Back at it to prepare for the WDW Marathon! Woo!!

Feeling good, just on the treadmill more as the weather gets colder and the snow sticks to the ground. Boo!!

As long as my training goes according to plan, I will hit 2,021km run in 2021!

Running miles in Nov: 37.28 slacker miles compared to what you guys are reporting. Less than I'd like, but actually a slight uptick over Oct and Sep.
Avg pace: 10:18 But this is with most runs being on my course with two hills. It looks like I am now consistently getting below the 10 minute mark for a flat course. (Woo-hoo!)

Been fighting congestion issues with the very cold air in recent weeks, plus what may or may not be a muscle pull in one leg.
Air temps in the 60s this afternoon, so we'll see how things go.
Eyes on bling, er, finish lines.....

November Totals:

Run - 44 miles
Swim - 8.2 miles
Dog Walking - 16 miles

This is the first full month back from injury and I'm feeling good with base training. In December I'm hoping to add more running miles, maintain the swims, and be more consistent with strength training and yoga. Short term goal is to get back to half marathon shape so I can run the Groundhog Half on Feb 5th.

Also, on November 20th I ran a Trail Turkey Trot 5K and placed 3rd in my age group! It was a small race and nevermind that there were only 8 women in my age group... :-)

Total Training Time = 19:50 hours

G miles = 3.9 miles

November was a good month. Made a triumphant return to six days a week run training, and capped it off with a second best marathon of 3:15:13 (link). I was very pleased with the effort. I continue to make strides not only in the physical realm of racing, but the mental realm as well. A majority of the month was spent tapering, then racing, then a week off, and then a nice easy return to running. Both of my shins protested the return to running after a week off. Similar feelings to my Lakefront Marathon 2016 injury where I seem to have extra bone growth on both shins. Thankfully, as of yesterday things have calmed down and I feel more normal again. Eyes are on the 2022 Princess Weekend now. I detailed the new training plan here (link). Despite the HM being the longest of the three races, my focus is on the 10k. I've never trained exclusively towards the 10k, so I'm excited to try that out. I'm also excited to try out five new to me workouts: Rat-a-tat, Vigil Miles, (Fast, Steady, Blast), Lumberjack, and Descending Special Ks. Several came from McMillan's data base of workouts. Since AG awards are gone at runDisney weekends, I've shifted my 10k goal from a Top 3 AG award to a Top 3 Overall finish. I'm more likely to fail than succeed, but that won't stop me from trying. My PR is 39:55 (which is my highest Daniels VDOT race making it my best performance ever) and the last six 3rd place male times were 37:41, 39:30, 38:41, 40:00, 40:47, and 40:09. But despite the PR, I still feel like a 10k in the 37-38 is attainable.

G's training got derailed a bit due to two colds, and my own time off from running. But she's ready to get back into the swing of things. She offered to bump her run training up a mile today because she's missed so much time (gotta make up for missed time, right?). But we talked about how it's better to ease back into things, and if anything we'll do a little less than we were doing and work our way back. We've got our eyes on the prize.

Teaching some good habits early! Maybe she won't fall into the same traps the rest of us have as we started running.

Looks like I need 174 miles in December to hit my goal of 2021 this year. It might be close. I am running my first Dopey next month, so should get some decent mileage weeks in before end of year.

November started by tapering for Indy Monumental Marathon. It was my 3rd time running this and I recommend it to anyone in the Midwest looking to PR that enjoys cold weather marathons. The roads tend to have a decent number of pot holes, but otherwise it is a good fast course. I was able to PR with a 3:25:04 this year in the race.

I did this 26 days after running Boston so wasn't really sure what to expect. Indy was supposed to be my "A race" in 2021, but then I got a late entry into Boston and had to do some cramming because I wanted to do my best there as it was my first time getting to run there. I probably went into Boston a little fatigued. I think I backed off my effort during Boston when I realized it wasn't exactly my day... however it was probably too late and it was a rough last 6+ miles... but a great experience.

After the race I wasn't exactly sure what to expect in Indy. In fact, I considered downgrading to the half. I was able to get in a few workouts between the races, but no more real long runs.

A couple days before Indy I decided I'd keep with the marathon. On race morning I decided I'd sorta hang with the 325 pacers and see what happened. Part of me wanted to run with some friends that were pacing the 345 group, but some other friends of mine were encouraging me to go for it. The first half didn't feel real easy, but I hit the midway point in what was a "pr" for me in a half. At that point, I figured I was invested enough to keep plugging away. I let the pace group get a bit away from me after about 17 or 18 miles as I was not really targeting 325, but just hoping I could best my prior PR of 327:35. The last few miles was really tough, but hung on. It was really a surprise when I finished with that time.

The point of all this is that you just never know. I guess Boston ended up being a really tough long run 26 days before my Indy race. I doubt this is the ideal way to train but for some reason it worked this time. Maybe I had a relaxed approach and not so much pressure on myself?

Any thoughts on Aftershokz? I know they were a sponsor of W&D, but I was perfectly happy with my AirPods. Well, as my runs have gotten longer I’ve realized that my batteries are shot. They died on me as I was ending my long run last weekend after a fresh charge. Amazon has Aftershokz on a Black Friday deal (cheaper than replacing my AirPods), so I’m wondering if I should take advantage.

I've been running in Aftershokz for 4 years and love them so much! I'm a huge fan!

Another happy aftershokz user here. Specifically the aeropex. Just bought a pair for my wife too. I’ve used the least expensive pair they make too, and those were also good… just not as thin/light.
