The Running Thread - 2019

1. Without a watch or without music/podcasts? Without music. I don't wear headphones unless I am on a treadmill or elliptical. Sometimes I will bring it to a marathon in case I get into a "dark" place, but can't remember the last time I raced with music. I find I get complacent with music and lose focus.

2. A race with 20 people or 20,000 people? 20,000 people. I love big races--so much more to look at.

3. In a cotton tshirt or cotton socks? Cotton shirt. Last week I had a blister on my toe that got so out of hand I had to seek medical treatment and I am still on antibiotics. I will spare you the photo.

4. In 110F or -10F temperatures? Doesn't matter, because I will be on a treadmill with either of those temps. If I HAD to choose, I would pick 110F. It would have to be a short run.

5. In high humidity or high winds? Humidity. I hate wind.

ATTQOTD:

1. easy, no music, since that is the way I always run.
2. 20000 folks. give me the bigger races. I get bored when running by myself in smaller races
3. ugh. not sure. shirt I guess, since I can remove it during a run...
4. -10F. Layers baby, layers!
5. winds. I am so over the humidity this summer. Winds I can handle.

Thanks, and yep: without anything else to go by, I just let Garmin figure out the calculations. So last night, since the Feels Like was over 100*, I tried running by HR, trying to keep it in Zone 3... and was ready to lose my mind, it was so slow and boring. I got fed up and decided to try a Max HR test: ran 3 minutes at as fast a pace as I could, rested 3 minutes, then did it again and took the highest HR of that second 3 minutes - but I didn't really give it full effort because, again, it was 100* and I'm not a total idiot. It was around 85% effort, I'd say. Garmin originally had my max HR as 172, but I hit 175 in my test, so I think my actual max HR in normal conditions is likely 185-190, possibly more. I will, however, concede that my ridiculously slow pace did handle the extreme heat really well, and it was nice to finish not feeling overheated, so there's some knowledge and value gained there. But I manually adjusted my max HR in Connect and will see how that pans out over time!

I was going to suggest what others have suggested about setting your own HR zones.

A big thing to remember with the optical HR sensors is that there is a lot of time lag compared to the chest sensors. Your 3-min test may not have been enough time for the sensor to detect your max HR (assuming you got to it).

Also make sure that your watch is pretty snug on your wrist, above the wrist bone. When I get sweaty during a run, I have to tighten the band a notch or two. If it slides around, you're going to have inaccuracies.

I assume the HR is not a cadence-lock, since you are seeing changes in the HR for different paces.

In the end, it's probably what another poster said...the heat and humidity affects you way more than you realize. On some days with high T+D, my breathing is pretty normal and easy for an EA or EB run, but my heart rate is still a lot higher than I would expect. See how your HR detection goes as you get into fall and winter, if you can call those seasons that in Florida. :)

I thought I’d share a cautionary tale from my run this evening. Maybe this is just common sense and showcases my lack thereof. If so, feel free to just laugh at me.

I run in wicking hats to keep sweat out of my eyes. Headsweats, to be exact, although I don’t think that’s necessarily relevant here. They’re great at soaking up the sweat and facilitating evaporative cooling. I never really gave much thought to what happened with the other sweat components until this evening, though.

I got caught out in a downpour in a thunderstorm during tonight’s run. That was bad enough, trying to race the storm home before it really caught me and got dangerous, but what made it that much worse was that in addition to fighting the rain on my glasses obscuring vision, that rain was hard enough to flush the salts dried into the hat down into my eyes. By the time I bailed into a church entryway my eyes were on fire from the salty solution flowing steadily into my eyes. It took 5-10 minutes to get my eyes clear enough to text my wife to come pick me up.

Don’t make my mistake, wash those running hats and visors regularly to prevent salt buildup in the fabric.

Information for life!

QOTD: Would you rather run...
1. Without a watch or without music/podcasts?
2. A race with 20 people or 20,000 people?
3. In a cotton tshirt or cotton socks?
4. In 110F or -10F temperatures?
5. In high humidity or high winds?

Great question @run.minnie.miles.
1>without music or podcast. I rely on my watch too frequently to give it up.
2>A 20 person race would give me a chance to finish in the top 20, so there's that. But I would go with the 20,000 people and the energy that comes with it.
3>No idea what material my socks are made out of (swiftwick, smartwool?), but it works and keeps my feet from hurting or blistering. Out with the cotton shirt.
4>I'll take -10. Been running in extreme heat all summer and just can't get comfortable.
5>Neither. Both can really suck the energy out of my run.

As Jacques Peppin-

"About an hour in you are going to want to baste the thighs in body glide. Don't feel like you have to, ummm, run to the store to buy it. You can use ooolive oil or baaader. maybe not margerine, as the flavors will be, mmmm, not so good."

Now I'm trying to imaging how Julia Child would say it...

‘There was this restaurant in Nice, that I loved, great classical Niçoise salad. I would get it in the warm summer months when the fresh oil poached anchovies could be had and, It was run by this absolutely wonderful man, by the name of Guy, and he used to tell me that, “Julia, there’s two things In this life that I was made for, Salade Niçoise, and running long distance.” I never understood, exactly, hwat, he meant by that, but never the less he was a darling and I would like to share his recipe with you today...”’

Now I'm thinking of the Seinfeld episode when Kramer decided to use butter as suntan lotion.

Hats - I usually wash mine every Sunday after my long run (when I wash the rest of my running clothes), though sometimes I go a few weeks without washing it.

It has worn out the Velcro over time, though, so I really need to buy a new hat!

I know we did something similar long ago, but how about a little round of "would you rather" for today's QOTD?

If anyone has been "lurking" or hasn't participated in the thread for a while, be sure to jump in today!

1. Without a watch. Definitely need some music!!!
2. 20,000 people for the energy. there's something very different about big race crowds!!!
3. cotton t-shirt. I can toss that quickly on the side of the road and run in my sports bra.
4. 110 degrees. I can't stand the cold.
5. high humidity. Ii feel like I'm getting nowhere when I'm running into the wind.

*Lurker emerges*

1. Without watch. Currently don’t have a watch and just have phone and music.
2. 20,000. Introvert in me wants only 20, but I like the energy of those big races. Only have done wine and dine 10k and half in 2018 and CowTown half in 2019.
3. Shirt. No way I would run in cotton socks.
4. 110f. Currently approaching that in north Texas. I turn blue in the cold.
5. Toss up. Will say wind though. Humidity just takes the life out of me.
