The Running Thread - 2019

QOTD: Who is looking forward to warmer weather or wishing for it to stay cool/cold for a bit longer?

ATTQOTD: We had what is likely our last freeze of the year last night. I for one would like it to stay cold as long as possible because summer sucks! The truth of the matter though, is it is going to start getting warm by the weekend and our days with the morning low in the 50's is about to be done until late October / November. :(
I am having a hard time being at peace with the current weather. I am thankful it isn't so cold they are cancelling school again, and it is too cold for any snow accumulation so at least I don't have to shovel?
I cannot seem to keep warm running, and I cannot bring myself to smear vasoline on my face to run at work, so I have been trying to log treadmill miles.... which increases the likelihood I skip a run all together.

I like that you know that Windy City fact! People usually don't believe me when I try to tell them that is where the name comes from.

We learned that in high school US history!

ATTQOTD: Bring on the heat! I prefer summer because there are fewer variables and less running gear in play. (Although I don't mind winter on race day.)

Even though it's going to be in the 20s tomorrow morning, spring seems to have sprung here in North Georgia. Trees are starting to leaf out and/or bloom. We'll start our pollen season where everything turns yellow soon.

ATTQOTD: i’m ready for it to get a bit warmer, but it gets to the mid-80s or so I no longer like it. At least on the winter you can always add layers. With the heat you can only do some much.

ATTQOTD: I'm sorta conflicted over the weather. I'm getting very tired of the windy, single digit temp weather we have had here in Chicago the past few weeks, and that's the warmup from the way below zero we had Before that. The trails where I run are snow over ice and are just not fun. Spring will eventually arrive and the trails will turn to mud for a few weeks, and I may possibly hope for cold enough weather to firm them up again.

Then late spring will be glorious with perfect conditions (which to me is morning runs in the 50's). Spring also means rain, but I actually enjoy running in the rain as long as the temps are reasonable.

Yes, then I will whine again when summer comes and we are in the 90's with 90% humidity, and running will not be glorious again until early fall.

But as much as I grumble, running the trails in any weather beats lounging around in my lazy-boy watching some lame TV show!

DH here. February numbers:
84.6 miles of running 15 miles more than February 2018
6800 yards of swimming most in about 6 months
In calendar year 2019, I'm +20 miles for January, and +15 for February, compared to 2018.

My annual Runner's World training journal ended its year on 3/3/19. 52 week totals:
969.7 miles running A 130+ mile PR
34.7 miles swimming Big drop from previous journal; accounts for more time to run

Biggest thing: no injuries that limited weeks of training. @DopeyBadger training plan helped a lot there.

Race Report- "Another Brick in the Wall"
Myrtle Beach Marathon- Saturday, March 2, 2019

Signed up for this race almost a year ago. Fast, flat, very few turns, and it's at the Beach.

Weather forecast was pretty gloomy all week but changed for the better the day before the race: mid 50s, cloudy, light winds. # Winning!!!

Drove 9 hours in the rain to Myrtle Beach on Friday, picked up packet, expo was pretty small with less than 10 vendors.
My hotel seemed to be party central Friday night, as it was wild and raucous all night long.
Got about 2 hours sleep.

Arrived at the start/finish parking area about 90 minutes ahead of time.
Ran a warmup mile and figured out I left my super-elastic-hidden pocket-runner's belt thingy at home. I use the pockets for keys/and cash, but the real reason I love this belt is because the elastic helps to...........um...........hold up my shorts. After loading my shorts with 6 gels, Peanut M&Ms, gummy bears, and Band-Aids, they get kinda heavy. TMI?!!!
Sure enough as I jogged around the parking lot, I had to use one hand to hold my shorts up.

Decided to hold 3 of the gels in my hand and that seemed to solve the weight issue.
Beautiful rendition of the National Anthem sung by a MB local and we started on time at 7 AM.
Cloudy, low 60's, and slightly humid but pretty ideal running conditions.

The course runs right down US 17 , the Market Commons, Grande Dunes, Atlantic Avenue, and many residential neighborhoods. It was really flat.
Slight breeze and headwind for most of the run. Nice volunteer and crowd support. A few DJs and musicians sprinkled throughout the course. One guy played a medley from the
Grease movie, and I started singing along. Hope nobody was looking.

Started between the 4:15 and 4:30 pace groups and determined to maintain my training paces and not go out too fast.
Nice and steady should result in a time of 4:15-4:22.
I was cruising along and slightly ahead of pace through the first 13 miles.
Started getting tired but found a good pace through mile 20.
And then I just hit the W-A-L-L.

I tried to keep going, find another gear, and gave it my all but I was completely out of gas.
This has been a common theme for me at the marathon distance, sometimes I hit the wall at mile 16, or 20, once at mile 7.
But it's always there and I haven't figured out how to climb it, go around it, or break through it.....yet.

Ended up taking some lengthy walk breaks at water stops and to walk off a glute muscle issue.
Had a nice view of all the runners jogging by during those last 5 miles.
I did rally for the last half mile but the damage was done.

Final time 4:41:30 (2:09 first half, 2:32:30 2nd half)

Finish line festival next to the MB Pelicans baseball stadium. Announcer calls your name.
Nice Finisher Medal (about the size of a CD), finisher shirt, and mylar wrap. Why do I keep saving the wraps?
Krispy Kreme donuts, Hershey's cholocate milk, sun chips, apples, bananas and pizza available to all finishers.
medal.jpg
Massage available, and REAL bathrooms at the stadium.
Parking lots were less than 10 minute walk.
Got in the car and drove the 8 hours back to Virginia.

It's a nice event, especially for those looking for a flat course or maybe a giant medal.
I think we caught a break with the weather and not much wind.
Myrtle Beach has a lot to offer if you have the time to stay all weekend.

Now it's time to train for Spring Half Marathons and kick some butt.

Great job and great report! I might have to run this one -it pairs two of my favorite things: big medals and donuts at the finish. :D

Wow that sounds like a really good race. I've done the Myrtle Beach mini in the fall but never the full. If you want giant beach medals the Big A.. Medal Series along the Carolina coast is pretty interesting. https://coastalraceproductions.com/2019-big-***-medal-race-series/
In the past not only have the medals been huge, but if you do more than one race the medals have magnets in the sides so they connect together. I wish Disney would do something like that for Dopey. It looks like this year they've moved away from that though.

ATTQOTD: not looking forward to actual heat, but mid-50s to mid-60s with low humidity would be heaven. It was 10° this morning and my school had no heat. I'm done with winter.

I don’t want to talk about weather, it’s so depressing here today, so how about a Paczki meme?

View attachment 386607
I really wasn't going to have one today. So I didn't. I had 2. :sad2:

ATTQOTD: I am very much looking forward to spring and some warmer weather. It warmed up to the freezing mark on the weekend for the first time in several weeks. I took advantage for my first outdoor run (excluding WDW during Princess weekend!) since mid January. I have been a fair weather runner prior to this winter and have tended to stick to running indoors once the temperature dips below about -5 C (~ 23 F). Much of the past two months has been between -15 and -20 C (0 F). We have a huge amount of snow and ice on the ground, including sidewalks and trails. We need some sustained above freezing temperatures, but they are not in the long-term forecast. I am not looking forward to the slush and mud season, but once we get past that it will be great to be able to enjoy long runs along park and forest trails again.

ATTQOTD: I do not mind the freezing weather that much, winter can be nice. But the road/trail conditions these days I can do without! So yes to warmer weather... That ice needs to melt. And loosing the hat, mits, neck warmer will feel good.

ATTQOTD: I need the warmer weather! 15 degrees with a negative wind chill is not enjoyable for anything, especially running. One of the most frustrating things is taking longer to get dressed for the run than the actual run itself. And speed workouts on the treadmill are really the work of the devil! At this point, I would be happy with at least 30 degrees and a peek of the sun.

ATTQOTD: One of my five year olds decided to puke right beside my bed at 2:30 this morning so for sure no celebrating for us.

Question for any of you that have had Plantar fasciitis. I got new inserts for my shoes and even bought KT tape. I’m doing all the stretches they recommend to do online. The pain isn’t bad at all just a little nagging and annoying at times. I don’t feel comfortable shutting running down right now becasue I have a 5k and half this weekend then Star Wars Challenge next month. Is there anything I am missing to help with it? If you’ve have had it, how long did it last? Thanks for any responses!

I had a bad case of PF a couple of years ago. I bought one of those socks that keep your foot flexed while you sleep. I forget the name but I called it my torture sock. :). It wasn't fun to sleep in it but I did feel like it helped quite a bit.

I'm way behind on this thread so I'll just jump in with yesterday's question.

I'm not looking forward to the heat but single digits in March here is getting ridiculous so I'm definitely ready for some warmer temps.

ATYQOTD: Well, given that my scheduled day of cross training now involves shoveling the snow that fell overnight, I say warmer weather, and to quote Veruca Salt in Willie Wonka.......

I’ll probably make the decision in August. There’s also a flat half marathon in New Hampshire I am looking at too. I am in FL so I don’t have hills and I’m that weirdo who looks forward to the ramps during Disney races.

Which half are you looking at in New Hampshire?

QOTD: Keeping with yesterdays theme a bit, Sunday daylight savings time begins. Who is looking forward to having a little sun in the afternoon to get your runs in without having to worry as much about cars being able to see you?

ATTQOTD: I am looking forward to it while its still nice outside, but will hate it when its a billion degrees outside. I do look forward to getting the majority of my runs outside starting soon though!
