The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: As a West Coaster, “cold” runs are 40-45 deg runs...and I will try to avoid those if possible. I don’t even own a pair of long running pants! I’m just amazed at how dedicated some runners are to go out in freezing weather or snow. I hope everyone stayed warm today/tonight!

ATTQOTD: Coldest I have ran this winter was Thanksgiving morning, temp was 38F, I ran in a pair of jogging pants, dry fit t-shirt, and a lightweight fleece zip jacket, which I unzipped after a couple miles. Today will actually be the second coldest day, predicted 44F with 39F windchill at the start of my run. But with it being lunchtime and full sun predicted, a long sleeve t-shirt and running pants will be enough.

I work at MSU - campus is closed tomorrow. This mean 17,000 students living on campus and 30,000+ more off-campus with idle time. I am terrified and SOOOO glad to not have campus coverage duty this week!

I was supposed to be in Ann Arbor this week conducting interviews, but the school asked is to reschedule because of the weather. I can't say I'm too sad about that, though I'm slightly disappointed I dug out my fur hat & won't get to wear it.

Well no one is actually stopping you from wearing your fur hat now, right? At least for a photo that you immediately post for us all to see?

It is -6 here now, wind chill -25 in Metro Detroit. Fortunately, I am warm inside. Unfortunately, part of that reason is because I have a heat pack on my hamstring. @Baloo in MI I probably should have had you bar my door on Sunday. The 12 miles outdoors on snow seems to have pissed off my hammie but good.

I agree. Definitely be aware of nickel and diming by the discount carriers. But also be aware that they really do serve a purpose for people who do not care about all the extras - like even a carryon bag!! Spirit is now flying non stop from Hartford to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale/West Palm Beach - where we have family. We can easily now go for quick weekend trips to FL on Spirit to visit family or a quick Disney fix for less than it costs for us to take the ferry from Connecticut to Long Island - where we also have family. No checked bag, no seat assignments (really cramped and uncomfortable seats by the way), no carry on - just a weekend bag that fits under your seat which works for a short trip, no free drinks, no snacks, etc. Just gets you from point A to point B. If you want any or all the extras you can still get them by paying for them ala carte or you can get a package that includes everything. And when you add it all up, it comes out to be about the same as flying on a legacy carrier or Jet Blue/Southwest.

I am booked on Frontier for Star Wars in April. It wasn't just the cheap price for me, it was also the only nonstop flight to Orlando from Little Rock. I usually spend $400 plus on a round trip ticket to Orlando and it is 6ish hours with layovers. I can suck it up and sit wherever they seat me for a 2 hour nonstop flight of $80! I will bring my own drink on and snacks although I think I can live 2 hours without eating, lol. I paid the same for checking my bag with them as I do with Delta so I didn't mind that. I would probably pay for a carry on if I was running a marathon but I will just wear my running shoes and if anything happens to my bag I will wear some of DD29's running clothes for a half marathon. So I agree with @huskies90 that if you don't care about all the extras they can be a good deal.

ETA: I have flown them before (to Denver) so I know what to expect and not expect! :)

There is a need for them clearly. I just like Jet Blue. I like the TV, I have always had luck with them running on time (hope I didn't jinx myself for my weekend flight) and the price is good.

QOTD: With the extreme cold weather parts of the country are experiencing today and this week, this seemed like a good opportunity to discuss running in the cold weather. What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?

ATTQOTD: While it is cold here (a high of 47, so cold for us) I've never had to wear long pants of any sort ever to run. Also water freezing while running has not been a issue for me either. My only changes when it is cold is maybe a long sleeve running shirt, gloves, and maybe a beanie. I usually regret having all of those after a few miles though so I normally don't wear them.

The coldest I have run in is 8'. Once the roads have ice on them I am inside though because with my ankles being so weak I can't risk any slipping and doing more damage.

ATTQOTD: Please pray for Florida. The end of the world must be near. I just left Publix and they had a huge display of space heaters, firewood and hot cocoa. It’s 61 degrees.

This talk of cold temps always makes me laugh. You can always tell when you live in the north. My daughter got in the car the other day with no jacket. It was 22'. I said, honey, where is your coat. She says, "Dad, its 22' out, its warm." I said st what temp do you require a cost? She says, "Anything below 15".

There is plenty of parking in north campus this morning, but those spots are still not adjacent to anywhere they do interviews, so that seems reasonable. You can still wear your hat when you make it another time!

Best money spent is my smart wool skirt.
This is the one item I feel I still need to make cold runs more comfortable! I need to start an Internet search...

Sorry, I'm going to throw a block on that theory: I grew up in WNY and was cold for 10 months of the year - always wore a down jacket in temps under 50! There's a reason I migrated to FL after 20ish years. ;)

QOTD: How often to you have to drive v/s walking out your front door for a run?

ATTQOTD: I would say its currently about 50/50 right now. When I can I run from home except the weekend long runs I always drive to. Some midweek runs I drive to my office after things settle down at home to run on the treadmill or just stay after work to run on it. I'm looking forward to the longer days coming up, but not the heat that comes with it.

QOTD: How often to you have to drive v/s walking out your front door for a run?

Only for a race. Otherwise, all my training runs involve walking out the door and starting to run. Unfortunately, my neighborhood lies in a little bit of a hollow, so I have to run uphill within the first 1/4 mile to get out of the neighborhood to more level terrain. There are times when I wish I could start on a more level surface to warm up, but I'm too lazy to change it.

Attqotd: I used to just run on the street if it wasn’t a treadmill run at the gym.

Now that Gantu is old enough to be my running partner for short goes (2 miles and less), I will be driving to the places we usually do long walks so we can run safely without worries from cars and such.

ATTQOTD: 100% drive. Totally unsafe to run where I live so every run involves driving somewhere, even if it is just driving to work and running from there. I would love to be able to just walk out the front door and get my runs in and it would probably mean I would run more often. But there is no chance of us moving from this house and no chance they will improve the roads where I live so it is what it is and I make the best of it.

ATTQOTD: In the summer, I walk out the door and run. In the winter, though, I drive about ten minutes and use an indoor track.

ATTQOTD: Right now it’s 100% walk out the front door and onto the neighborhood streets. We have discussed driving to different trails for our upcoming long runs, so that percentage will change in the next couple of months. And races of course, but those are a given.

ATTQTOD: During the week, out my door onto the neighborhood streets. Weekends I mostly drive to another community for the Running Club runs and/or run with friends.

ATTQOTD: I run mostly at work (walk out the door and go), but at home, if its a long run I drive, a short run I will run in my neighborhood (about a mile loop).

ATTQOTD: I live in PA so the coldest I've run is probably 3 or 4 degrees. I wear a sleeveless baselayer, turtleneck baselayer and a zip up shirt. For bottoms, I have two pairs of New Balance Siberius tights that are amazing for cold weather. Do an amazing job of keeping you warm once you get moving. Gloves, hat and neck gaiter too.

ATTQOTD: I drive to runs on the weekend for the running club I'm in. There's a paved trail right behind my house that I run on during the week so it's probably 60% right out the door and 40% driving.

My first time posting in this thread! After intermittently posting in 2017, and posting a grand total of once in 2018...

I seem to have caught the running bug again well and good over the last couple of months so hopefully will be popping in here more often!

QOTD: How often to you have to drive v/s walking out your front door for a run?

ATTQOTD: I always walk out from my front door for a run! I live somewhere where cars are ridiculously expensive due to taxes so I don't have a car (on the upside, public transport is cheap and good here), thus driving to a run isn't even an option for me! And there is a really nice park nearby, so I just run there and then run around the park (park has a 2+ mile loop)!

QOTD: For my morning run folks out there. How early do you start your runs? How much time do you give yourself from waking up to starting your run? What is your routine?

I'm almost always a morning runner and lifter. Occasionally, I will opt for an afternoon run if it means I can lengthen the distance. But for the morning runs, I'm usually awake around 4:40 and out the door by 5:00, back by 5:30/5:45.

What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?

Keep in mind, I am thinking New England cold, thus it is usually Sub-zero to 25 degrees. During those temps, I usually wear long compression pants and a pair of sweat pants. I long-sleeve tech or short-sleeve t-shirt. I wear a Nike all-reflective jacket, gloves, and a tech-style ski-mask. If it is REALLY cold like singles or sub-zero temps, I switch to fleece gloves.

During the REALLY cold runs, I usually limit my runs to 6, maybe 7 miles. I almost always carry a GU incase dizziness starts. *Knocks on wood* I've never needed thus far.

Except for my strength training warm up runs, 100% are driven to currently. During the summer it will drop down to probably 50%. A year ago it used to be 100% at the gym in winter, and 1.5 years ago 100% out the front door, but now in summer I’m into finding new nearby trails or I have an objective in mind for vert.

Looking forward to running up Timpanogos and Pfeifferhorn this summer. I’ve been eyeballin Timp for over a decade now, and would love to go for a winter summit, but will be fine with a summer solo run.
