The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: High here today is 39 which is cold for us. I brought warm leggings to go under my Sparkle Skirt, a long sleeve running top under my running hoodie. I may add gloves and a buff if it windy.

ATTQOTD: (The Floridian response...) "Really cold" where I live would be temps in the 30s - we get a few of those each year. No risk of water freezing, so that's a non-issue. But I really cannot handle the cold well, and I have Raynaud's Syndrome and cold air-induced asthma, so I have to be careful with those. Gear would be: thick, thermal running tights, short sleeve shirt or tank, long sleeve shirt, thick tech half-zip or wool-tech jacket, brimmed hat with fleece ear cover, SmartWool socks (but I wear those for every run), Buff neck gaiter over neck/nose/mouth, knit gloves.

It was 49* last night and a bit windy, but I ran after sunset, and I froze in thin running tights, long sleeve shirt, wool-tech jacket (to be fair, my torso was the only part of me that stayed warm), hat and thin ear cover. Shoulda worn the thicker tights, Buff, and gloves.

ETA: I didn't used to own any cold weather running gear. 2017 WDW Marathon, I layered a bunch of my thin, FL-weight stuff and stayed reasonably warm, but hated the feel of all those layers. But I also thought that day was a one-off. Cut to 2018 WDW Marathon weekend... so. many. layers. The morning after the marathon, I ordered some real winter running gear and I've had exactly NO regrets! I'm so happy to have those options on cold days, even if I only have a few of them each year. Fellow Southerners, trust V: go ahead and buy some winter gear when it goes on sale - you'll be happy you have it some day!

ATTQOTD: When it’s really cold out I will dress up nice and warm. I’ll wear a longsleve tech shirt and pit over it a Under Armour zip up hoodie. I have a nice warm pair of Nike dry fit pants that I’ll wear (if it’s extremely cold I’ll even put on a pair of long underwear. I also have a running beanie, a lot of gloves with the mitten flip option and, again, if extremely cold, I have a Seires neofleece combo scarf I’ll wear. I’ll also put on calf high socks

ATTQOTD: It is cold here. Today is 21* with a real feel of 14* and it is only going to get colder as the week goes on. I wear fleeced lined pants from L.L. Bean that I absolutely love. They keep me so warm, even when running in rain and sleet. I wear a short sleeve shirt and then a long sleeve tech shirt over it or a fleece. On top of that, I have a Northface jacket, which is not bulky at all and keeps me very warm. I also wear a hat and gore tex gloves. The gloves some times get stuck in a pocket after a mile or so. And my feet are never cold. I am pretty comfortable as long as the real feel is not below zero and windy. After that, I'll head to the treadmill. As awful as the cold is, I much prefer this over the heat and humidity in the summer.

ATTQOTD: I'm in the really dangerous "arctic blast" part of the country- current windchill is -24 and is just going to get worse. My running strategy is to rest on the couch tonight with a hot drink :)
I don't usually go out if it's <20F, but as always, appropriate layering does the trick- must have my ears and hands covered!

QOTD: With the extreme cold weather parts of the country are experiencing today and this week, this seemed like a good opportunity to discuss running in the cold weather. What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?
ATTQOTD: Here are my clothing guidelines:

Always: Shorts and tech shirt
Below 45°: Add a warm “cold gear” compression shirt under my tech shirt – I have several with different levels thickness, lining and/or warmth to match how cold it is.
Below Freezing: Add running tights under my shorts and hat/gloves
Below 20°: Add a warm tech sweatshirt

Note, I rarely go outside if it is below 20°. I would usually just skip that day or run on the treadmill. We have only had 2 days like that so far this year and one coming up on Thursday. If we get a string of days below 20° like we did a few years ago, I will go out but if I can avoid going out, I will. I have also been lucky that almost all my runs this winter have been above freezing – mainly because I go out in the afternoon when it is relatively warmer, so there have been only a few days of wearing hat and gloves. I have a feeling the rest of the winter will be much colder but we will see.

As for the temperatures in the Midwest, I am very nervous since both my kids are going to school out there. In Indiana, the forecasted high on Thursday is -12° and low of -22° with a wind chill of -45°. That is so crazy and I know my daughter has never experienced anything that life threatening before and I hope she stays safe. Luckily her school (Notre Dame) canceled classes this week through Thursday. I hope everyone affected by that extreme cold stays safe!!

Most people have answered how I would. Layer. If it’s windy, I make sure my outer layer is a wind proof type of layer (wind pants over tights, and maybe fleece pants also if it’s really cold - or fleece lined tights, lots of options). If it’s really cold (maybe 15F or colder and windy), I’ll wear my snowboard mittens. My hands usually end up getting too hot, so they come on and off.

To help keep my water from freezing, I will use my insulated water bottles (same ones that help keep my water cold-ish in the summer, Orange Mud type). And depending on how cold it really is, I might put lukewarm water in the bottle(s).

When it's this cold, with negative windchills I won't go outside, it hurts too much. I'll just workout inside, no treadmill, but I don't have a race anytime soon so no big deal to not run now. Otherwise, I just wear lots of layers (including my Skirt Sports Toasty Tights) and have good thinsulate mittens, something for my face/head/ears. My feet freeze easily but the nuwool Injinji toe socks help a little bit. I don't bring water on cold days, I'll go back to the house if I need to drink or I'll have it wrapped up to stay warm at the end of the driveway.

ATTQOTD: Our lows here aren't that bad. It usually doesn't get much below freezing and it's a MAJOR event if we get a dusting of snow (which melts off in about 5 minutes). Even on the coldest early mornings when we run, I'm still in a short sleeve tech shirt and capris. I have been thinking about adding gloves lately though.

ATTQOTD: While it is cold here (a high of 47, so cold for us) I've never had to wear long pants of any sort ever to run. Also water freezing while running has not been a issue for me either. My only changes when it is cold is maybe a long sleeve running shirt, gloves, and maybe a beanie. I usually regret having all of those after a few miles though so I normally don't wear them.

Currently looking a little flurries at 7 °F and -13 with the wind chill, and I am thankful it is that warm as I know many others are worse off- it is still warm enough for snow! Unfortunately we have an inch of ice under our gorgeous new snow so I called it quits and walked carefully back to my desk to eat lunch and will hopefully escape to the TM before cutting out of work early. My clothing was a bit chilly for walking outside but would have been ok for a quick 3-4 miler. Gear for this failed attempt included a lame hat (I had one I really liked, but my kids lost it, the current is insufficiently thin and REI seems to have sold out of balaclavas in the last week!), a thin long sleeve tech shirt (I have a version of the saucony freedom shirt I got at Sierra trading post, so it is a few models ago) a heavier (the thickness is >2x the under shirt) hand me down unclear branded fleece lined turtleneck top, a windbreaker jacket having pockets stuffed with tissues- I pick one with a hood until I get a new hat, a buff for my neck, dutch mittens, my new favorite leggings (the North Face Winter Warmer tights), smart wool socks, and sunglasses- not because of the sun so much as the wind. I would consider one of those quilted skirts as my butt is always still chilly, but I do not want to pay for it.

The rest of the week is going to be a disaster as Wednesday or Thursday are supposed to be negative temps and very windy, so I am hopeful but doubtful I can leave the house and hit a treadmill at the Y and work for half a day before swapping childcare with DH. I am supposed to be on a business trip to Chicagoland on Friday, but I think I am just going to bail on that as the weather does not look better, and I have no idea at what temps the airports start having challenges. I think I am going to fall just short of my arbitrary monthly mileage target as I am simply not running outside the rest of the week.

nuwool Injinji toe socks
OMG I did not know this was a thing! Thank you! I just keep reordering my same Injinji lightweight socks and never looked any further! Now I can stop doubling up a pair of other socks over them! :)

ATTQOTD: Cold here is 30s for the most part. I still haven't mastered dressing for it. Under 45 I always wear full length leggings (just regular ones. If it's in the 30s I wear a long sleeve 1/4 zip shirt. Today I wore a fleece lined one due to the wind and then got too hot. Once I wore a tshirt and leggings in the 30s and when I lost the feeling in my hands I had to go back to my car for a jacket. Clearly I have not mastered this. 45 and higher it's usually capris and either a tech tshirt or a tank. (yes I get funny looks)

As far as discount airlines, I've flown Spirit a couple of times. They do nickel and dime, but round trip on spirit to Orlando with nonstop flights, checked bags and choosing the larger exit row seats was still $200 cheaper than regular economy on United. I can not eat for 2 hours.

Well I just got done with a lunchtime run with a temperature of -8 and windchill of -24. I wore pair of leggings, shorts, a tech shirt and a long sleeve cold gear shirt. I also had on a headband to cover my ears, balaclava, and sunglasses. The shirt and leggings were not the ones I thought I had packed and were thinner than I would've liked. After the first mile I did warm up pretty well though, and they were fine, still would go warmer though.

Tomorrow morning they are forecasting an air temp of -24 with windchills as cold as -50. If I decide to get up for a run, I will certainly put on more layers, but I'm thinking tomorrow might be a rest day, though how often do you get the chance to say you ran in those extreme colds? So who knows, maybe I will run.

Attqotd: the coldest I have run in this winter is 12, not so bad. When it has been below zero I have been too busy at work. For teens I wear thermal top and bottom, extra 1/4 zip thermal top, shorts, normal socks, lightweight gloves and hat. If there is lots of snow, I’ll throw on snowboard socks to keep the snow off my bare ankles. Shoes are Solomon speedcross 4 gtx. Anything above the teens it varies on wind and sun.

Liquids I only have for long runs which I keep in my car at the trail head and do yo-yo laps.

They definitely help in the cold weather. I was skeptical at first, but I'm super glad I got a couple pairs for this winter. They are thicker (even then my normal midweight) but not where you feel like you have a giant sock on at all, which is nice.

Wanted to give a S/O to our DIS runner @canglim52 who doesn't post much on the Running Thread but does in my journal. He ran the Celebration HM this past weekend and finished in 5th/1333 finishers with a new PR of 1:24:33. I can attest he's come a long way from Oct 2016 when he was gearing up for his first 10k. His fitness then was around a 50 min 10k or a 1:50 HM. It was fun to go back and look at his 5k repeats of 400-1200 meters at 7:43 pace where he was absolutely struggling. And now, a HM in 6:25 min/mile pace. Well done man and keep up the hard work! You've earned every bit of it.
Thanks Billy!! I actually ran my first half at Celebration too, back in January 2017. Last time I ran it at a 1:52, I’d say I’ve made some progress!! Thanks again for all your help and guidance :-D

I ended up living somewhere that basically never drops below freezing - the worst we get is some frost on the grass. So, "cold" is as always a relative term.

When it gets cold enough, I switch to a long-sleeve running shirt. "Cold enough" depends on how intense a run I have planned. If it's a casual one with my younger son, it's below 45F or so; if it's a long solo run, below 40F.
