The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: In North Georgia, we get lows in the 30s, sometimes 20s, and maybe once a year, the teens. I hate running in long pants, so I usually do compression shorts and compression calf sleeves. For tops, I just layer tech shirts, both long and short sleeve. Headgear is a running hat and maybe an earband. I have a pair of running gloves with pull out mittens for additional warmth. No special socks, other than crew length instead of 3/4 tops.

I peel layers as I warm up. Earband and gloves go in the waistband of my shorts and extra shirts get stuffed down the back of the inner-most shirt. The shirts down the back sounds uncomfortable, but I find it oddly comforting.

QOTD: With the extreme cold weather parts of the country are experiencing today and this week, this seemed like a good opportunity to discuss running in the cold weather. What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?
I haven’t run since the marathon. It’s just been way too cold. -50 here tomorrow with wind chill.

Layers, I wear a head mask type thing. I don’t like gloves but will if I have too. If running outside in very cold I don’t run long enough to need much hydration.

If I had access to a treadmill I would be doing that right now instead of going outside.

I am supposed to be on a business trip to Chicagoland on Friday, but I think I am just going to bail on that as the weather does not look better, and I have no idea at what temps the airports start having challenges. I think I am going to fall just short of my arbitrary monthly mileage target as I am simply not running outside the rest of the week.

Friday is going to be warm in Chicago; it should be about 20*F. That is going to be a heat wave after tomorrow and Thursday, -25 and -6 respectively and those are pre wind chill.

Yikes! Stay warm! Did your classes get canceled?

I had a vendor to my east tell me yesterday "at least it won't be as cold there." If he can tell the difference between -35 and -50F, good for him! ;)

Yesterday’s attqotd:
I work graves so morning runs for me is getting up at 3:00 pm. In the summer I run after work just as the sun comes up. Weekend runs are harder in the summer trying to get in before it gets too hot and still getting sleep.

Today’s attqotd:
Layers including fleece lined leggings and hoodie. Best money spent is my smart wool skirt. I got that after winter last year on clearance at Rei. I wear that in the 30’s and below.

ATTQOTD: Another Floridian here, so a relative answer. About 55deg when I ran today so I wore non-lined capris, long sleeve tech shirt, and a tech zip jacket. Ended up tying my jacket around my waist about half way through my tempo run.

I do keep some thicker running clothes. Don't need it much, but it makes for great base layers when we go on snow skiing trips.

ATTQOTD (yesterday)- I typically run in afternoons/evenings during the winter and early mornings during the summer.

ATTQOTD (today)- I wear hat and gloves, windpants, and jacket for temps under 35 degrees. I ran in the snow a couple of weeks ago and tonight I ran in the dark, snow, and ice to get in a run. Trying to avoid the treadmill but tomorrow is another day when the running forecast will be a "1" with temps in the teens and winds in the twenties so I may have to bite the bullet and go to the gym. Would have treadmilled tonight but the weather was so bad the gym closed early!!

I don't drink water on runs less than an hour. Longer runs I have to stash it in the car to keep from freezing.

ATTQOTD: I am extremely cold natured until I get about a mile or so into my runs. I live in central Alabama so luckily our temps don't get that cold. Gloves and ear warmers are must for me if it is in the 40s or below. If I ever saw a temperature with a negative sign in front of it I would probably faint and hibernate like a bear until summer. Give me 80 degrees and sunshine, please!

ATTQOTD cold weather gear and hydration:
I had a few runs at aroud 0F this year. Those were shorter than an hour so I did not carry water.

For my long runs, if I carry water, it is in a pocket on my leg. It is usually not necessary in freezing temperatures because the parks bathrooms (fountain inside) are reopened for the skating season!

Today was a balmy 15F, pretty typical around here. And so was my gear: Beanie, neck warmer, long sleeve tech shirt plus a polar fleece, gloves, pants with wind cutting pannels and fuzz, wool sock and regular running shoes. Because of a tick layer of ice and snow, I put my Yaktrax on.

Oooh! I didn’t even consider the outdoor rink = bathrooms! I’ll check into that.... next week.

Time to tap the kegs and open the bar!

I work at MSU - campus is closed tomorrow. This mean 17,000 students living on campus and 30,000+ more off-campus with idle time. I am terrified and SOOOO glad to not have campus coverage duty this week!

ATTQOTD: So here in Mid-Michigan it is supposed to get up to a warm temp of -6 tomorrow (this is without windchill). I am from California, I used to live near the beach. What is wrong with my life decisions... Cold weather running used to be my thing. I loved the cold air and feel of crunching snow under my feet. It has all been shared - layers, covering ears and hands. As for a water bottle, I would carry it inside my outer layer and outside of really long runs it would at least stay slushy.

To all the clothing suggestions I add this. If there is ice or deep snow, just wear shorts and a shirt and run indoors on a treadmill. I am less than three weeks from the date of a year ago that a slip in the snow led to months of failed recovery, then surgery and second recovery. One year later I am halfway thru the return to running program from my PT. If I could go back and block the door, tackle myself or simply invest all this money that is now going to medical and PT bills in a gym membership or a new treadmill then - grrrrrr!

a topic of discussion at work was a news story out of WI that some distributors would not be delivering beer for a few days, so I hope everyone stocked accordingly!
I did see a keg in the snow Monday. I hope they floated it as I think the binge drinking would be safer than going outside for a refill.

Well I got my wish, or my nightmare. They moved the uphill sprint to a different month than the downhill half marathon, which have been held on the same day the past few years.

So, @LSUlakes, please also put me down for-

June 1, Red Bull 400 Park City, (not have heart attack/NA)

September 14, Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon (sub 2 hour/NA)

Looking at my log the coldest outdoor run I've done over the last few years has been -8. I won't even put a coat on until about 20 degrees. A base layer and tech top layer is all I need down to 20. I don't carry water with me so don't worry about it freezing. I can do about 90 minutes in the cold at an easy pace before I feel the need to drink anything and by then I'm usually done.

If I'm running down around 0 I'll have a hat and gloves, base layer with an insulating jacket (all wicking), tights under shorts, and higher socks so I don't have exposed skin. This is all wicking including the gloves. I don't think something like single digits is enough to force me onto a treadmill. Bonus if it is snowing because it makes for better traction and I love running in the snow.
