The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD morning runs: I am so looking forward to morning runs again... But that will wait until there is more light and no snowbanks... Likely in April or May. Then, 5AM runs will be possible. I sneak out while everyone is sleeping, get up to an hour of running and then go to the normal shower/breakfast/lunch prep/commute routine.

QOTD: For my morning run folks out there. How early do you start your runs? How much time do you give yourself from waking up to starting your run? What is your routine?

Love weekday morning runs- but I do so on the treadmill at the gym. Everything is laid out the night before- alarm goes off at 4:30. Out the door by 4:45- on the treadmill by 5:00. Love leaving as people are dragging in just before 6AM and I am already done!
Weekend runs are usually later starts- Sundays it is after 10AM.

Attqotd: I wish I could morning run, but it’s winter and I’m at work until 10, and then usually amped from work, and in the morning it’s too cold. Well, right now it is just too busy for me, anyway.

I can’t wait for Sundance to be over.

Park City is a ski town for me, but one of the RoadTrailRun writers lives there and posts some beautiful runs around there. I’d like to get into some trail running in the future and PC seems like an epic place to do that.

Well, make sure to say hi the next time you are around, although in winter I am generally at work.

ATTQOTD: I love morning runs in the summer when the sun rises early, and it's not freezing outside. Plus, I don't have to be back home until 7:30 when my husband has to leave for work. But right now, I struggle getting out of bed early enough to scrape the car and get to the gym before I gotta wake the kids. I think if my son didn't have to be up for school at 5:50 I'd be more committed to morning runs. But I'd have to wake at 4 to get my runs knocked out. Keeping my fingers crossed the next school will have a later start time so I might be able to squeeze in more morning runs during the week.

ATTQOTD: Currently not a morning runner but looking to make the switch to make life a little easier at home. To get my runs in I have determined I will need to wake up sometime between 4:00 and 4:45 AM depending on the distance. My normal wake up time is currently 5:45 AM. For shorter runs I would be able to sleep a little later, but I wonder if it would be better to just wake up at the same time everyday regardless of distance to make it more of a routine.

When I was running in the morning I would wake at 5:00 and be out the door for 5:30.

@LSUlakes dont know anything about Copa, but be aware that more affordable airlines like easyjet, wow, frontier, spirit etc nickle and dime you over every little thing. So I’d go over it with a fine toothed comb.

ATTQOTD: baby dis_or_dat wakes at 4:50am(!!!!) and wants to be nursed immediately, so I’d have to wake up at 2:30am to do a run. No thanks!

I agree. I booked a flight with Frontier once. I thought I found the deal of a century. Once I got the email confirmation and saw they didn't even let you bring a carry on for free and I started adding up the charges for what I would actually be brining it was more than the Jet Blue flight I went with. I cancelled them immediately and will never even look in their direction again.

I am just being bitter. I am a Saints fan.
Yeah, they got screwed. I would be pissed too.

I have a question, which I think people here will be able to help with:

How would be the best way for me to see what tempatures were over the last few years for a specific race? I’m thinking about a marathon at the end of July, but if the average temperature for the last couple of races has been like 90°+ that’ll just be an automatic nah. But if temps are like mid-80ish I might go for it. Thanks!

Just google the weather for the town/city for that date with no mention of the race. "Weather for ------------- on July 4th, 2018" for example.

Weather Underground shows historical data. Just go to the city where the race is. One of the tabs for selection -besides Today, Hourly, etc is History. You can enter any date.

I agree. Definitely be aware of nickel and diming by the discount carriers. But also be aware that they really do serve a purpose for people who do not care about all the extras - like even a carryon bag!! Spirit is now flying non stop from Hartford to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale/West Palm Beach - where we have family. We can easily now go for quick weekend trips to FL on Spirit to visit family or a quick Disney fix for less than it costs for us to take the ferry from Connecticut to Long Island - where we also have family. No checked bag, no seat assignments (really cramped and uncomfortable seats by the way), no carry on - just a weekend bag that fits under your seat which works for a short trip, no free drinks, no snacks, etc. Just gets you from point A to point B. If you want any or all the extras you can still get them by paying for them ala carte or you can get a package that includes everything. And when you add it all up, it comes out to be about the same as flying on a legacy carrier or Jet Blue/Southwest.

I usually get up by 3:45 or 4 to either run or do strength training. Depends on the day and if I can get in a lunchtime run at work or not.

I am booked on Frontier for Star Wars in April. It wasn't just the cheap price for me, it was also the only nonstop flight to Orlando from Little Rock. I usually spend $400 plus on a round trip ticket to Orlando and it is 6ish hours with layovers. I can suck it up and sit wherever they seat me for a 2 hour nonstop flight of $80! I will bring my own drink on and snacks although I think I can live 2 hours without eating, lol. I paid the same for checking my bag with them as I do with Delta so I didn't mind that. I would probably pay for a carry on if I was running a marathon but I will just wear my running shoes and if anything happens to my bag I will wear some of DD29's running clothes for a half marathon. So I agree with @huskies90 that if you don't care about all the extras they can be a good deal.

ETA: I have flown them before (to Denver) so I know what to expect and not expect! :)

I agree! We've flown Frontier multiple times nonstop. And including the checked bag fee, I was able to snag our marathon weekend flight for <$100 per person, so I can totally buy a Diet Coke in the airport if needed for that!

Frontier does allow a "personal item" and every time we've flown with them, I've used a backpack and as long as it fits under the seat, they don't say anything. You can fit a LOT into a backpack!

For all you ladies who wear Lululemon, what do you recommend? I have my discount code from the Strava challenge and not sure what to get. Thinking long pant but might consider a crop too.

Just catching up on here so I am really late to respond. I wear a lot of Lululemon, but don’t have too many names of specific items because my memory stinks. I like their Speed Up crops for the leg pockets and the zipper pocket in the back to hold ID, key, etc and their 4 inch Run Times shorts. I wear their running skirts all the time. They have leg pockets just like sparkleskirts and a zipper pocket in the back. I prefer the lighter weight material of lululemon and they use less material on the skirt so they don't swing as much. A lot of their running tops are longer length so they don't ride up!

Discount airlines.....

They serve their purpose and you can get a really good deal sometimes. We are a family of four and booked last minute flights to Maine on Frontier over Thanksgiving for less than $1000 round trip which included seats, carry ons & checked luggage. It was also non-stop flight which is rare for getting to Maine. Other flights were 600+ per person plus I'd have to pay for luggage. Even Southwest was crazy high. I don't need "free" food or beverages on flights. I bring my own or pick something up at the airport. There's no wifi or tv, but I can read or download netflix shows to my ipad.

ETA...my inlaws are coming to FL in April from Maine. Their fully refundable Frontier flights with all the add ons were $618 round trip.

QOTD: With the extreme cold weather parts of the country are experiencing today and this week, this seemed like a good opportunity to discuss running in the cold weather. What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?

ATTQOTD: While it is cold here (a high of 47, so cold for us) I've never had to wear long pants of any sort ever to run. Also water freezing while running has not been a issue for me either. My only changes when it is cold is maybe a long sleeve running shirt, gloves, and maybe a beanie. I usually regret having all of those after a few miles though so I normally don't wear them.

ATTQOTD: the coldest it gets here is high 20s so I will wear leggings (not fleece lined or anything), a long sleeve tech shirt, and a fleece pull over that gets thrown off after I warm up. Then I usually add gloves and an earwarmer headband because I hate when my ears and hands are cold.

ATTQOTD: So for my 12 mile run this past Sunday with wind chill of 0, I wore my winter run shirt (wind resistant and brushed inside), boy short underwear, running tights, windproof run hat, mittens with flip top, and Vaseline on my face. Socks and my trail shoes since it was snowy. I was plenty warm, although, my thighs were a little red when I got done. My water did not freeze—the run motion keeps it sloshing.

My big problem is that with the footing being loose, I have strained a Hammie. Hopefully will not be a major issue, but I tried to run today and no way.

ATTQOTD: warm leggings and layers of shirts, some tech, some not. Or usually I just treadmill.

It's supposed to be windchills of -35 or so with highs of -8 here for the next couple of days. The last time it was this cold I was in high school and watched my boyfriend's tears turn to instant icicles when he realized his Rush tape was frozen and wouldn't play. So I'm not even going to to go to the gym. It's just too cold for anything.

When I lived in Russia and ran in the cold, I made the most of layering. I'd have a polypropylene base layer, thermal long sleeve running shirt, and a fleece top on my upper body. For my legs, I wore a polypro base layer with tights or fleece-lined tights over them. Add in a warm hat, running gloves, and a balaclava to make it easier to breathe, and I was good to go down to about 0. Any colder than that and it became a toss-up between outside and a treadmill.
