The Running Thread - 2019

QOTD: Non running related question today. Some POS made a duplicate of our CC and decided to make some purchases. Lucky for us it started just two days ago so the amount did not get out of hand, but the inconvenience of this whole process sucks! For todays question I wanted to ask if you have ever had your card info stolen and what was the outcome?
ATTQOTD: Same as others. Many times. Biggest pain in getting a new card number is re-entering it in all the online sites/stores I have mine linked to. I only use credit cards mainly for the security reason, to get credit card rewards and to float $$ for a month. I have never used a debit card but I understand why they exist. But those who use them should be working to build credit and manage their finances so they can switch to credit cards. If managed correctly they are by far safer and more advantageous to the user.

No I haven't thankfully.

ATTQOTD: It's happened to me at least twice. Once was definitely a gas station skimmer. I have no idea how the other one happened. Both were through my bank debit card. Totally agree that the most annoying part is having to change all the auto-pay info you have on file with people. And the waiting for your money to be restored to your account of course.

All I know is that 40-49 is a fast group at my local 5k's too and I'm not looking forward to leaving my much smaller age bracket in a few years. I always feel like I've at least got a "shot" at sniffing times close to at least third place...but usually that bracket above me is like double digits deep in times that make my jaw drop.

For some weird reason 25-30 and 30-35 for guys is always really small in our area...which I think my husband is ok with. But then it jumps up.

Maybe I should run in your area more often when I turn 25 ;)

Our main card has been stolen or compromised at least 6-8 times in the past 10 years. The most recent time was this past Sunday morning when someone tried to make charges online with Barnes & Noble. For all their other faults, Chase is really good at fraud detection and notification and sent me a text and email about it immediately. They also let the card stay active for in-person transactions until the new one arrived last night.

This is why we have a separate card for all of our automated bill paying, toll tag renewals, etc. I only have to change Amazon and 2-3 others because of this latest fraud and not the rest.

ATTQOTD: A few times. The most inconvenient was a few years ago. Since I live overseas, I had to track down an American landline phone and call my bank to cancel the card and send me a new one. It took about two weeks for the new one to arrive since it was shipped internationally, so I’m hoping I don’t have to go through that again anytime soon.

ATTQOTD: Yes and the unauthorized charges will be removed from our account. Frustrating part is not having our card for another 3-5 days and having to take care of some other details. Also I HATE a THIEF!!!!

Yes, it seems about once a year. Which is why we have one account for point of sale purchases and one that only has recurring monthly charges. So far, everything resolved in our favor. It seems to happen to DH’s MasterCard more often. The most frustrating was in 2016 with fraudulent charges from Lyft while he was out of town. The account was closed, charges reversed and a new card issued. Two days after the new card was issued the charges started coming through again. Another call to the card issuer, another card closing and DH asking how the $#@&* brand new card information was compromised resulted in the disclosure that Mastercard has an agreement with Lyft to automatically update card card information for Lyft accounts. Which is why Lyft is a now a blocked vendor on that card and why I can not use them.

I am with @PrincessV, no debit card for me. No matter safety programs the banking industry brags about, the lack of fraud protections on the account is not a gamble I am willing to take.

ATTQOTD: Yes. My husband and I have joint credit cards. We tend to use one card for everyday purchases, and that one has had the information stolen multiple times. We haven't been able to figure out where the skimmer is, even though we tend to frequent the same places (i.e., gas stations, CVS, etc.). Presumably the scammers just move it around frequently. At any rate, our everyday card is a USAA card and they are great about removing any unauthorized charges and giving us new cards/numbers. The annoying part is waiting for the new cards to arrive in the mail.

I'm still catching up on the thread, so I don't know if anyone has mentioned it, but this is a good idea we use. We have a different credit card that we use for all automatic online payments, like utilities, automatic renewals and so on. We only use this credit card for that, so that it won't be stolen. It is such a pain in the neck to have to change your credit card information for all of those automatic-charge things.

ATTQOTD: yep. Twice. The first time someone tried to take a 50g cash advance out in some country I've never heard of.
The second time someone charged over a couple grand in makeup and hair and designer shoes. Which is funny because everyone that knows me knows those are not purchases I'd make in excess. Charges were filed against the person and I got updates every so often. I never had to worry about it, the cc company just took care of all of it for me.

ATTQOTD: I have both had my CC hacked and also had a large bank that I banked with before marriage add fraudulent things to my account (perhaps you've heard of this bank in the news? ;) )
The "good" thing about a CC is that you haven't paid for those charges yet, whereas with a debit card, the money is out of your account. Something to keep in mind when traveling :)

It's amazing, isn't it?! I use my Disney Visa for everything. Literally any purchase or payment I can make by credit card goes on that one. I take it on road trips, out of the country, buying all sorts of weird things in weird places... how on earth did it know when one charge out of thousands likely wasn't me?! I find it fascinating!

I agree wholeheartedly. I use my Disney Visa for everything and write one check at the end of the month. It's been compromised several times over the years and Chase has always been the one to notify me of the fraudulent activity and has always been good about promptly removing all the fraud/disputed transactions. It's still very frustrating when it happens, though. One of the things the Chase rep told me last time this happened was that the Disney Visa tends to see a lot of the fraud because the first 8 numbers of the accounts are the same, which leaves the fraudsters only needing to guess half as many numbers once they figure out the card numbering pattern. You'd think they'd mix it up a bit in light of that, wouldn't you?

I had a card hacked once. My Chase Visa. They also notified me immediately, so I got it stopped after just the one fraudulent charge.

I don't use my Disney Visa that often, but my main card is an Amazon Prime Chase card... they are definitely good about notifications and stuff.

I try and use Apple Pay wherever I can to avoid skimmers. I wish more gas stations took it, since that is the place the shady skimmers seem to be the most! I only have one or two stations near me that take it though.

Well, that’s a new one. The trail System i run on is multi-use. A classic Nordic line is cut into one side. Runners and snowbikers are supposed use the opposite edge. Skate skiers down the middle. In the last mile of my long run today. Had one skate skier day thanks for staying to the outside, then, not 100 yards later, another stop me and tell me to go somewhere else to run. Like he doesn’t have the choice of going to the Nordic only trails around town. It was like I was back on the 80s/90s with the skier vs snowboard bs.

Funny story. He’s an old friend of mine. His name isAaron Dozier, and I used to work with him on the east coast. Look him up on Facebook. Also goes by the name Rock. Nice guy over all, and my favorite yoga teacher I’ve had, but he wasn’t entirely playing a character. He also auditioned for Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds, and admits that it went to the right guy. I can’t fathom why he didn’t read for Ted McGinley’s part.
