The Running Thread - 2019

My family and I went to Park City earlier this week and had some amazing snow. DS sprained his ankle pretty bad the day before the trip, but it healed up pretty quick and he was able to ski the last 2 days, albeit slowly and cautiously. I had brought my running shoes to try and do a run, but skiing always makes my quads sore + the temp was very cold + the hot tub seemed like a better decision = no running.

Tues ATTQOTD: I equate a comfortable run as one where I can breathe through my nose for good portions of the run. I read that doing nose breathing can help posture and train the diaphragm muscle for more efficient running. On the rare time I run with others, then a comfortable run is when I can talk with the other person without too much effort. I've been doing more comfortable running these days to try and minimize injury.

Weds ATTQOTD: I've had my cc number stolen a couple times and the cc company always reimburses the fraudulent amount with no questions asked. I always try to think where the number got stolen, but can never figure it out.

Thurs ATTQOTD: I've always had a gym membership so that's where I go for my 1-2x/week strength training. I find that paying the gym membership as extra motivation for going there, whereas if I try to workout at home, it generally doesn't happen. I don't do too many run specific strength training...more general biceps, pecs, back, shoulder, and leg workouts.
Yo, why didn’t you say hi?

@LSUlakes,

Please update the following race info:

1/12 - Smilelea - Walt Disney World Half Marathon (NG / 3:33:10)

2/10 - Smilelea - Mercedes Marathon Relay (6.9 miles) (1:34:46 / NA)
3/8 - Smilelea - Miracles in Motion 5K (34:00 / NA)
4/14 - Smilelea - BHM 26.2 Half Marathon (3:10:00 / NA)

Thank you!

Please scratch me off the 3/23 Run Before You Crawl 5K. :(

I am so sad, this is one of my favorite events... there's a 5K race, which is just kind of meh, but then you get a bracelet and you get to pub crawl through like 14-15 different pubs/bars in our town, getting a free appetizer item (each one is serving something different) and drinks (not free) for like 3-4 hours, collecting stamps at each pub, and you get entered into a drawing for however many stamps you collect. My running group always has a group of at least 5-6 of us having a great time. Well, usually the race is the week before St. Patrick's day when the holiday falls on the race weekend, and I signed up for a 2 day dog agility seminar a couple months ago for the 22nd and 23rd, and I just realized that it's the same day as the race. They moved it to the week after instead of the week before... maybe because it's been really poor weather the last 2 years when it's the week before (very cold).

Question regarding Disney vs non-Disney half: there is plenty of talk about how the half marathon course this month is terrible. I’m not quite clear are the complaints were that the course was more boring than other Disney races, or other half marathons are better courses? I am doubting a more local race would be more fun or have better race support, or so few potholes, but if you all have amazing local races I would like to know how you find them.
I've ran the Donald Half just twice (2016 & 2019) and the 2nd half of that course an extra time with the Wine and Dine 2016 course. I don't mind it all. Both times it went by super fast for me, especially this year. I do wish we had more Epcot park time like everyone else. It was neat coming in different this year, but not going up the middle was disappointing. The Hwy miles never bother me, but I can see them getting to other people. The last few ramps are really banked and that is bothersome for sure. SO, compared to my local half options (we aren't known for great races here so yeah) it is way more exciting hands down because castle, main street, fellow runners, costumes, Djs, characters, etc. But, my local options I can really go for time to get me that corral at Disney.

@LSUlakes I’m finally getting caught up with my 2019 races/race results:

1/10/2019 - CDKG - WDW 5k (NG / 48:19 elapsed time)
1/13/2018 - CDKG - WDW Marathon (Have FUN! / 6:08:44 of FUN!)

3/3/2019 - CDKG - Hot Chocolate 15k (<1:41:25 / N/A)
3/16/2019 - CDKG - St. Paddy’s Day Half (<2:31:12 / N/A)
4/20/2019 - CDKG - Tenacious Ten 10k (<1:03:17 / N/A)
8/17/2019 - CDKG - Tacoma Narrows Half (<2:22:07 / N/A)

Thank you!!!

I think the overall feeling is not so much that the WDWMW half course is terrible, so much as it is not as enjoyable as the other courses available during that race weekend.

The 5k really can’t be beat for the proportion of course time spent in the park and running around the World Showcase in the dark with the torches lit and buildings outlined in their Illuminations lights is magical, even if I don’t like the 5k distance.

The 10k is very similar to the 5k, but adds the loop around the Boardwalk and Yacht and Beach Club lake. This is my 2nd favorite course after the full.

The marathon is just special, running through all the parks and is my favorite course of any I’ve run, anywhere. I call the marathon medals my “ultimate park hoppers”.

While the half marathon does not carry as much magic or appeal as the other three due to its comparably small amount of park time and monotonous back half, I still prefer it to any local half course I’ve run.

Race Report: T^3 Lake Half Marathon, Chicago, IL

When I woke up Saturday the temperature was -12; Why and when did I ever think a HM in Chicago in January was a good idea?

The race is an out and back from Soldier Field Stadium (where the Bears play) on a bicycle/jogging path along the lake front. Two things made the start of the day bearable. The first is that Lake Michigan acts as a giant heat sink, so the lakefront is a bit warmer in the winter (and cooler in the summer). The temp at the gun start was about +2 with very little wind. The second is that the 1,600 runners were able to hang out in the club section of the stadium where it was warm with comfy chairs and big clean bathrooms. We queued up by estimated pace inside the club, exited out the door and the starting line was about 30 yards away. The gun start was about 3-4 minutes later so no standing around getting cold.

The Chicago Park District did a fantastic job plowing and salting the path and there were just a few icy stretches. The snow was about a foot deep off the path. I knew a PR attempt would just be silly, so I fell in behind the 2:45 pacers and ran a steady controlled race. There were 4 aid stations so a possible 8 stops during the race. On the return the sports drink cups became slushies which was kinda fun. The only issue was that the lead 2:45 pacer had to drop out at about mile 10 (looked ill) and his assistant did not have a GPS watch and did not know what our pace should be. The group started slowing down so I left them. I finished in 2:45:20 with my Garmin showing a total run of 13.25 miles. The winner crossed the finish in 1:09:35 which I think is fantastic under the conditions.

I was surprised how warm I stayed during the race. I was wearing 4 tech t-shirts under a wind jacket and tights under track pants. My hands kept getting hot in my ski mittens so I ended up taking my gloves off every 10 minutes for about 3-4 minutes. I'm a cheerleader for SmartWool products wearing their socks, balaclava, and beanie hat. My feet never got in the least bit cold. By the time I crossed the finish I was carrying my gloves, balaclava, and hat. But within a few seconds after finishing I was getting cold in a hurry so I put everything back on for the 200 yard walk back to the warm stadium. Temp was +10 at the finish. Thanks to F^3 for putting on a very well organized race; I think I'll do it again next year.

Wow!!! My father in law talks about this race every year but we never run it. I’m not gonna lie that I’m glad I was warm inside today. Major props to you for racing today!!!

Hey, if you are in Birmingham, you should consider the Tuscaloosa Half Marathon on 3/30...

I did think about it, but DH initially told me I couldn't race in March. With my recent battle with shinsplints, he didn't want me to push it. So I said I'd take March off, until I saw the advertisement for the 5K that's 10 mins down the street (and it's for a great cause). My reasoning is "It's just a 5K."

I will, however, consider it for 2020. I'd love to read a race recap if you run it.

Question for everyone. I am going to be at Disney for the Superbowl. I’m not a bar person so I don’t know what’s available down there to watch the game. I’m assuming ESPN but I wasn’t planning to be near the boardwalk that day if I didn’t need to be. Anything at Disney Springs?

Splitsville has TVs and a bar/restaurant.

I don't know about your local races per se but I've done way better (and less expensive) races in cities across the country than I've done at Disney. The only thing I really like about Disney races is running through the parks. I don't care about pictures and don't find the stuff you get all that compelling. I just love Disney so as long as I'm going I try to work in a run. More and more they are non_Disney races in other parts of Florida. It is unique but you can find unique places in cities all across the country. My top three, in order, are The Flying Pig in Cincinnati, OH, The Frederick Half in Frederick, MD, and as much as I don't like the RnR Series, RnR Philadelphia.

In Florida The Gasparilla in Tampa and the Halfathon Series in Pinellas County are great. My next Florida race should be the Space Coast Full and I am really looking forward to that.

Aren't you in Montana? I might be mixing you up with someone else. If so there are some great races in your area. I've never heard a bad thing about Missoula and after a friend ran the Great Teton Half in WY that shot to the top of my race wish list.

This is a Disney running board so there are going to be a lot of Run Disney fans. That is perfectly fine but don't discount the many great and unique races throughout the country. One of the best side effects of being a runner, if you ask me, is going around the country and seeing it on foot doing local races.

I am protesting the Super Bowl... Bah Humbug!

Quick Q - we ended up being in WDW for the marathon weekend this year, and did the 10k, and a very last min sign up for my first ever 1/2 marathon (first one ever)

My time for the half was essentially 2hr 48. If i want to get into a better corral for a future run (trying to be there for there for Star Wars 1/2 in April 2020 - would that be a sufficient time to do it (they say cut off is 2:45) - or would i need to do a different 1/2 at a quicker time - or would my 10k of 63mins be sufficient...

Morning all, hope you had a great weekend! I was considering removing my goal from the half marathon I have in two weeks, but decided to wait until after this weekend to decide. Well I am happy to say I finally had a good run yesterday. Found my stride about 5 miles in, and finished strong. So not only am I keeping my goal, but I am adding another race:

2/23 - AntimonyER - The Chocolate Run 10k (45:00 / NA)

Your 10k is a submittable POT as long as it has occurred within the last 2 years prior to SW 2020 (so April 2018?). The 10k POT cutoff for a HM to be submittable is currently 1:15:00.
