The Running Thread - 2019

I like the idea of a Mountains themed race where you can ride the Mountains as part of the race. It would be fun to do an obstacle filled 5 or 10k similar to the Warrior Dash, but theme the obstacles and have Disney characters out at each obstacle (climbing the wall - Mulan and Shang cheering you on, some strength obstacle - have Gaston mocking you, etc). They could have a run in NYC themed to Disney on Broadway. Haunted Mansion and Pirates would be great too.

Heck yeah! They could do the whole race through Magic Kingdom with the requirement that you have to ride the Mountains on every loop.

Rather than a beer mile, a Mountains mile around MK. You are required to ride all 3 mountains as part of your race, they can be done in any order, but if you bypass one on the course it requires a full loop around to come back to it. Would allow for some strategy if queues were filling up too quickly, but the added distance would be the penalty for taking such a strategy. Some type of proof would be given upon exiting the ride and you are finished when crossing the start/finish with all 3 rides completed.

What a glorious mess it would be.

ATTQOTD: I really want a Stitch medal, but I doubt anyone wants a Stitch's Escape attraction themed race so nevermind about that. I'd love a series that was about the different ride vehicles. Medals with Dumbo cars, teacups, peoplemovers, pirate ships, etc.

Side Question/Request: My hubby is currently in a rut with not running and not too happy about it. He's having a hard time with motivation and may start C25K over again. If anyone wants to post here or PM me with words of encouragement for me to show him I think it will help him.

These National Park races are one of the main reasons I decided to train for the half marathon distance! There are several I have my eye on, but when I casually mentioned doing this race to my DH, he was all in! (From a strictly support side of course lol). Glacier, Yellowstone, Rockies and Smokies are ones I would love to do. Gonna have to figure out how to not let hills intimidate me!

I just found out about these when I was searching for semi-local half marathons and mmm...don't know if it'll be next year or some time off in the future, but Glacier is on the list now. My housemate is really excited about the idea of camping for the weekend (the one I looked at, the official "hotel" was a campsite!). I'm excited too but think I may regret sleeping on an air mattress before a HM.

ATTQOTD: "Look for the fun part"

Sometimes for me it's picking a more scenic route. Or listening to my favorite music. Or wearing something especially cute (I know!) Or choosing a race with a fun atmosphere. Or going to a race with people that I like. Or picking out a show or youtube vlog to watch on the treadmill.
Or most importantly just enjoying moving quickly forward by my own power aka I just like the act of running.

Usually when I lose my way it's when life gets "adultey" and stressful and I forget the above. And then it's really hard for me to just get the energy to put on my running shoes.

So option 2 is "just put on your shoes"

I had a few mornings this winter like that. Couldn't get outside to do a real run and rowing is hard, so it's easy to want to skip that maintenance work. But then I'd talk myself into putting on my athletic wear and gosh, I'm already dressed, might as well put on the shoes. Shoes on, might as well go sit on the rower and do a minute or two--hey, since I'm here I might as well do at least half my scheduled workout. You know what, that first half wasn't too bad, might as well finish. Etc. Then I'd feel all confident and happy-tired once I'd gotten it done.

I’ve never been particularly athletic so when I first started with C25K it was: “No one is laughing at you.”

And now I’ve graduated to: “You can do hard things.”

This was a big thing for me to tell myself. On previous attempts to get in shape I'd wear baggy clothes that hid my figure, but last year I found it was infinitely more comfortable to run in capris and a more form-fitting top. Felt really self conscious; rehearsed all kinds of retorts in my head for if anyone gave me a hard time for wearing form-fitting clothing. No one ever has. And then I worried about whether people were judging me for walking more than I run, and no one has ever commented except for a few people I passed in races expressing admiration that I was keeping a steady pace in the last stretch.

To answer my question:
I would theme a kids race of less than a mile to the Disney Jr. Dance party so I could convince my kids to run it with me. Also, I could use the Lion Guard clip of zebras hollering "Panic and Run!"
I would use Matterhorn (my favorite DL ride) as a trail 10K, largely because I do not think I could do much more of a mountain run.
I considered Its a small world as it is my overall favorite ride, but I thought no one would come run it with the song playing around the course, even for a mile.

I'd be there for It's a Small World. The song is on my Disney running playlist, and no one who travels to Disney with me escapes riding that ride. I kind of adore it.

If you were a race director and were looking to theme a race not at a Disney Property after a Disney World/Land/Sea/Paris/HongKong/Shanghai (or what ever I missed) attraction, what would it be? You may choose a different theme for different distances if you are feeling creative.

Also, Tower of Terror is off limits as it was already a race theme :)

This is easy: a Pirates of the Caribbean race in the Caribbean. I'd make it a multi-day event as part of a cruise with 1-mile, 5k, and 10k options in several different ports on different islands.

Sad day in our house today - our Pomeranian Pekingese cross Olly passes away in his sleep last night. He was over 16, so had a good innings, but will be missed by us.

Sorry for your loss

Where can I sign up for this???

ATTQOTD: Pirates/Haunted Mansion are the first that came to my mind as well. I love the mountains race through MK idea too!

ATTQOTD: I keep thinking about a carousel of progress/dapper dan kind of race. Each distance could be themed toward a different decade. “There’s a great big beautiful tomorrow”... playing at the start and finish!

Conservation theme. I would use Finding Nemo characters for the kids race, Jungle Cruise design for the 5k, Outback Trek for the 10k and Kilimanjaro’s Safari for the half marathon. A zoo or conservation organization could tailor the exact animals to what they are caretakers of and have animal ambassadors out pre and post race for photos.

@McNs, I am sorry. Hugs to you and your family.

ATTQOTD: This is a bit of a stretch and would be hard to pull off, but it'd be fun to do a Carousel of Progress race. You could run through different eras and the sections of town would look like those times, complete with how people were dressed and cars (or lack of).

Which mile do I nap during? Because that’s the best part of Carousel of Progress.
