The Running Thread - 2016

What's everyone's plan with shoes? I've got about 300 miles on my current pair, but I love them (and can't find another pair of the same). Trying to decide if I should keep or switch!
I have been rotating 5 pair of the same shoes during this training cycle. 3 of the 5 have just gone over 300 miles. I will continue to use them, but only on shorter runs (5 miles or less). The other 2 pair are at about 150 miles each and will get me through the races in January.

Sadly, these shoes are just not available any more in my size - anywhere. I have worn this model for 2+ years, and I am going to have to find something new to run in after the WDW races. I really hate that process.

Some people run a lot more than 300 miles in a pair of shoes. That is pretty much my limit.

@LSUlakes I have some races for 2017 when you put the rest of the list up. For now, I have one.
January: 1 - Anisum - One-One Run (36:00 / NA)

It's all about feel. I usually can get about 400 miles on a pair but after that they feel awful to run in. If your current shoes still feel good you may get a bit more out of them. Either way, you need to start looking if your current model isn't available because it may take time to find a new pair you like (if you haven't already) and rotate them in so they're comfortable when your current shoes do give out.

Yep, same problem with these shoes--I bought them before I was pregnant and then only wore them for a month until about two months ago because my feet were too fat while preggo. And now that I've realized they are the perfect shoe, they are two models old and totally inaccessible.

QOTD: As kids its likely at some point you attended summer camp or something similar. Would you be interested in attending a running camp for adults?

ATTQOTD: Like most I have been in summer camps for various things growing up. A few years ago I came across a article in Runners World (Second mention this week lol) in which they talked about a few running camps for adults. I did a little research and they actually look like a lot of fun. Not sure if it will ever happen, but given the chance I would go without hesitation.

For reference here are a few links to some of the camps: (Zaps is the one I am interested in the most)

300 - 400 miles is about the max capacity for my shoes. The tread [toe and heels] tend to wear down pretty significantly in that range and I lose a lot of support. My "race" shoes usually have 50 - 75 miles on them to make sure they're properly broken in and that there are no surprise issues.
What I tend to do, is introduce a new pair at the 300 mile mark and alternate with the old pair [same brand and version] until the new pair makes the cut! Styles of shoes, style of running, weight and distance will all be factors in your decision. I also like to make sure my socks are good for the longer distances and don't introduce new ones to the mix for race day.

Its about time to get a new pair. While total miles on a pair will vary, you can use the new pair on shorter runs to start breaking them in and that way you wont find yourself at a race in new shoes that you've only ran in a handful of times. Everyone is different, but I get somewhere between 350 - 400 miles on a pair. When I hit 275 ish I get another pair and start rotating them.

Will there be smores? Just kidding...... Given the opportunity, I think I would do it primarily for a learning and networking experience. You see I'm at the age where "I think" I know enough about myself and running that I don't need any structure, but in reality it's probably what I need the most!

This week we have the following folks with a race:

17 - @ebradley23 - Seashore Nature Trail 50k (Finish / N/A)
17 - @croach - Seashore Nature Trail 50k (NG / N/A)
17 - @SueInBoston - Jingle Bell 5K (NG/ N/A)

Best of luck this weekend to all! If you would like to revise your goal or unable to run this weekend, let me know and I will make the change. Looking forward to hearing how everyones race goes this weekend! Also looks like a DIS meet up opportunity at the Seashore 50k this weekend!

I can't even get more than 250 out of a pair, let alone 300! By 150-175, they're worn enough to be reduced to low mileage. I have 3 pairs with around 50 miles each on them for the 10K, 1/2 and full. I have a pair with 150 on them for the 5K and that'll probably double as a non-running shoe for the rest of the weekend.

ATTQOTD: Never went to summer camp - hate even the thought of any type of forced frivolity and socialization with a gazillion strangers, lol! No way, no how.

I've got 210-230 miles on the two pairs I've been rotating since August. I'm going to go ahead and retire them now, though, with this flare up of runner's knee. Not sure if they are the root cause, but I am a heavy-ish runner (about 200#) and I tend to pound a bit when I run, so discretion being the better part of valor I'm going to put them out to pasture and see if new shoes help with the problem. Was really hoping to get 300+ miles out of them and retire them after WDWMW, though...

BTW, have you checked eBay for the model that you like? I've had great luck buying shoes "behind the model year" at good prices on there. Also, be sure to check sites like 6pm.com, too.

ATTQOTD: I can't say the idea of any kind of camp particularly tickles my fancy. But I'd do a weekend clinic or something for sure!!

What? As some sort of punishment? o_O

Hahaha. Also, just guessing from your username that you've had some emotional conflict the last few CFP years? (UF and OSU alum here!)

ATTQOTD: I didn't know camps like that existed! That is really kind of cool. I used to love dance camps, so I imagine this will be similar. Now I'm gonna go click on all those links even though something like that isn't in the cards for this year with two Disney trips.
I think I'd only really enjoy myself though if there was wide variety of types of runners so that I wouldn't feel out of place. I'd like being around awesome runners, dont' get me wrong...you can learn a ton from them...but I'd want a few roxymama's around to comiserate with :)

Yes, but I land on the Alabama side when they face one another. I wasn't sure where I would land until 2014. The game brought clarity to my true feelings.

Shoes: I have 2 pairs of Altra Olympus original versions that I've been rotating through. I bought 4 pairs in the spring of 2015, 3 gray and 1 purple, so I've been using the purple sparingly since last fall and they only have 186.2 miles on them right now. I'm currently on pair 2 of the gray ones and it's probably about time to swap them out. They have 271.1 miles and the tread is getting pretty worn at the ball and starting to wear through to the black in some places (i.e. the colored layer of tread is worn away and I can see the black part underneath).

I need to do the process of finding out what to wear next. The Olympus is in their trail line of shoes, but the 1.0 model was marketed as being good for hard trails or roads. I decided to give them a try because at the time I was eager to try out Altras due to the shape/width of my foot, and I didn't like the colors of the Paradigm 1.0 model (the road shoe line), and I got a GREAT deal on those pairs of the Olympus, which is why I bought 4 pairs. They are $150 shoes and I got all the gray ones for $29.88 each and the purple ones for $45. But now I've been running in these 1.0 versions for almost 2 years now, and both the Olympus and the Paradigm have been through 1.5 and 2.0 versions. I would bet good money they'll be to 2.5 by the time I finish out these last 2 pairs. :) The Olympus no longer mentions road in the ideal uses, so I'm guessing I'll make the switch over to the Paradigm. I've wanted to try out the Torins, too, for shorter runs, but just haven't picked up a pair.

Definitely the wrong choice there--but then, I'm never going to get over the Tide ruining our perfect season and making Timmy cry my senior year of college... ;)

I've been reading about the FIRST camp for a few years and wish I could make it happen. The other one that I'd like to try is Eric Orton's Cool Impossible camp in Jackson Hole http://www.runningwitheric.com/page/jackson-hole-run-camps Unfortunately, with limited vacation time each year and kids, it isn't easy to justify a solo vacation. I also wonder how the mix of abilities would really shake out. Is everyone going to be a sub-3hr marathoner?

On the one hand it might be cool to network with people who share similar interests. On the other hand, the cost and time investment required to go to a camp seems like somewhat of a waste of money given even if I improve as a run (which is always my goal) I'm not going to improve to the point where I feel I'm competitive enough in it to make it worthwhile. I run for fun and some of this feels like it would take it to a more serious level than I desire.

Just be happy you don't have to play them every year while trying to run the toss dive, over, and over, and over again! But, hey we have a new OC now, maybe we will try that new things all the other schools do... what do they call it??? Oh a PASS!!!

From what I gather from the Zaps camp, it's more likely that the sub 3 hour guys are doing some of the coaching and the majority is just normal runners. Not saying you don't have some fast folks there, but I would say there is fewer of them and more in the average area...

I'm pretty sure I read the same articles and got interested in doing such a trip. Unfortunately, with limited vacation time I've never really looked too much into making such a trip a reality. Too many other things that I'd like to do first. I'm sure I'll maintain some interest in doing one someday, just not sure I will ever make it happen.
