The Running Thread - 2016

Congrats on finishing your race! Sorry you had some bad experiences while out on the course. For the most part, runners are a good group of folks, but like with so many things, there is always a few bad eggs. Good luck on you upcoming races and keep up the good work!

Since that was the worst part of my experience I call it a success! It really wasn't a big deal just surprising the small gaps people tried to pass in. :scared:

Hills are relative. My idea of hills living in VA is going to be different than yours in BR. I've not done the race yet (on my list for 2018). I've read there are a few hills, but it's no Blue Ridge Marathon. I think the LR marathon seems manageable. You just aren't going to BQ there. But, isn't that what Houston is for?

@Dis5150 could probably give more insight to the hills. I believe she's done the half, so she may have familiarity with the course.

BQ at Houston was a very aggressive goal that was going to be hard to achieve. With the amount of runs I have missed over the last month, it's very unlikely that I will get anything near that. Perhaps 3:20 to 3:30 is still on the table, but 3:05 isn't going to happen.

Looking for some recommendations for a spring marathon (Mid March to mid May) and was curious if anyone had a recommendation? The closer to may, the farther north I would like to go to get ideal weather.

@IamTrike how did you like the Tobacco Road Marathon? How's the course and weather? Would you recommend it?

I only ran the Tobacco Road Half Marathon this year, but I'll give you my thoughts. The course was one of my favorites outside of Disney. It was flat and fast with most of it being run on hardpack trails that were very wide and roomy. The weather was nice and according to Garmin this year's race was run in the low 60s with cloud cover. It was cool and comfortable from a NC standpoint.

QOTD: Since today is election day, todays question will focus on that. Did you or are you going to vote? Are you going to have to adjust your running plans to both run and vote today?

I voted this morning (no line when I arrived at about 6:55am). I had to get up earlier to fit a 5-mile run in before showering and voting. Then, took a conference call at home before commuting into the city. It already feels like the day should almost be over.

I voted early about a week and a half ago. I just wished there was a code I could enter into my cable box to verify I had voted and opt out of campaign ads for the remainder of the season!

I've posted in here a few times about the problems I have been having with my ITB.

I just wanted to let people know that after several months of dedicated physio exercises - I got through the three races at Wine and Dine weekend completely unscathed. No pain during the race, or afterwards (I happily ran down a set of stairs at the Boardwalk hours after which made me want to do cartwheels!).

The added bonus? All those pistol squats for five months gave my thighs added strength - which meant for the first time ever I've run a half and don't have any thigh pain afterwards. In fact I have no muscle pain at all after the three races. This has made me realise the importance of strength training, stretching (after a race, not just before) and foam rolling. It has made a world of difference not just to how my injury has healed, but also how I have recovered after the races.
That's awesome news, congratulations!! Can you be my trainer?! :teeth:

I did vote. No run as I'm still resting my foot from the tendinitis. It's almost gone though so I may try and get in a mile or two this weekend.

@LSUlakes I did do the half last year and everyone was complaining about the hills. I was like "what hills?" Part of it is a steady, slight incline. It's a split off race - at mile 12.5 the half runners went right and the full runners went left so I am not sure about the rest of the distance. I plan on doing the full this year (we shall see how I do at WDWMW first!). :)

In other news, my sinus infection has returned and is kicking my butt. I feel like this whole training season is going down hill fast as its been one thing after another lately.

I hope you feel better soon! Sinus infections suck!

ATTQOTD: I voted by mail in ballot so no adjustment needed for that. However DS has his soccer pizza party tonight so I'll be running at lunch instead of in the evening.

That would require a passport which I don't have. I guess I could get one but international travel seems like a expensive option. I'll look into it though.

Not as expensive as you might think...we just booked our flights for Marathon Weekend a couple weeks ago after planning to do the drive for the first time...Niagara Falls, NY to MCO for $80 return taxes included. Cheaper than driving! Also, your American dollar goes 30% further in Canada :(

ATTQOTD: They are giving us 30 minutes off work to vote. Since I usually run right when I get off work I am going to try and clock out 30 minutes early, run, then go home and get DH and mom and go vote. :)

I have seen them at a race expo last year and that medal is massive. I think I've read that each year that make it a little bit bigger than the previous years... If so, they are going to have some interesting issue in about 20 years lol. Hills?

I travelled to Montreal in September for a half and it was no more expensive then going to any other race. Only thing was getting a plan for my phone($40). And like @CheapRunnerMike said you're getting a favorable exchange rate.

Out of the marathons I have looked at thus far, I really like this one. It would give me enough time to recover from the Houston Marathon in January, and get in full training cycle. Cost seems to about the same as far as any airfare and hotel, so not a big difference there. Flights from Orlando are much cheaper then from here, I am coming up with about $400 for a round trip. Which isn't that bad imo, defiantly couldn't drive it cheaper than that. Looks like a shuttle system is available to the start for a small fee. What else can you tell me about this race? It may be a little while before I try to pass this one along to DW, but I see a opportunity if things fall into place perfectly...

I'm glad we cancelled our TV service. Florida ads are nothing but politics this fall.

Following. I would be interested around May or June. I was looking at RnR San Diego and Seattle. Does anybody have an experience with either marathon?

I voted this morning before work. It's a non-run day for me so no problems with scheduling around the vote.

I finished Lumiere's Challenge this past weekend! I had an amazing time and am so glad I got to experience a RunDisney race as it's supposed to go. :) Now that it's over and that was the big event on my calendar, I'm trying to decide what my new goals will be. I'm not registered yet but I plan to do 2 local 5Ks in the next few weeks as fun runs, one on Thanksgiving and a Santa themed one the week after. Then I'll start thinking about next year. This is such a strange feeling for me at this point, since it's the first time since last November that I haven't had a commitment to a long race on my calendar! That will most likely change, but I'm not registering for anything yet.

ATTQOTD:
Yep, I voted a couple hours ago! It did not interfere with running, since between Wine and Dine and the early sunset after the time change, I'm taking at least a few days off.
