The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I usually only post if it is a PR or I placed in a race. Or if I hit a new, long distance. I do post in groups that I belong to for encouragement, ie First Time WDW Marathoners group, Slow Runners Club, or one of the Sparkle Skirt pages if something special happened while running in a Sparkle Skirt. :)

I don't think there is anything wrong with being nervous before a marathon. Most people are. They aren't easy. I even saw an interview with Meb where he said he gets really nervous before every marathon he runs. If he is nervous then I would say you have a right to be as well. The fact that you are nervous only means that you have picked a challenging goal and you are going outside your comfort zone. That's awesome! Be proud of yourself everyday!

QOTD: I track my mileage in my head. I know it sounds weird but I just add the miles after each run and keep it all in my mind. Then I go by feel as well. If a shoe is still feeling good I won't move it to everyday sneaker status just because I hit a certain mileage. On the flip side I won't keep going in a shoe just because I haven't hit a certain mileage either. If I'm in pain after a few runs it might be time to be done.

All this talk got me looking for deals though. The Asics outlet I usually go to is having a buy one get one 1/2 off sale right now. If my shoe qualifies for the sale I may be able to get 2 pair for $180 when one pair is normally $150 because the sneaker itself is currently on sale for $120. I think I am going tomorrow to try and stock up and get my shoes for next year. Their running clothes are also on sale for 70% off of the summer stock so I will see if I can find any goodies there too.

Oh, and I just need to add my status. I rode my bike outside today for the first time. It was in the 70's here, which is warm for MA this time of year. I was worried it would hurt bad but it didn't. I had to walk the big hills because that hurt but everything else was OK. I was sore all day but it sure felt good to get

Thank you! I feel better knowing Meb gets nervous too.

ATTQOTD: I run in a few different types of shoes depending on the type and length of my run (trail or street and under or over 10 miles) and track the miles on each shoe. I begin to transition around 300 mile and retire the older shoes around 350-400 miles. Usually I can really begin to feel it as 400 gets closer. I do move running shoes to afterword/weekend shoes, then to yardwork shoes and then trash. I would like to donate some, right now I have about 8 pair just collecting dust in the basement that I will likely just not get to as I run through more.

Very psyched about my race this weekend, I have an agressive race goal. Going to give this every effort and see how it goes. I have never run this race before but hear it is very pretty. Good luck to everyone racing!

Good luck this weekend @Baloo in MI!! When I figure out what I'm wearing, I'll let you know, in case we run in to each other. :thumbsup2

ATTQOTD: I don't post training runs, but I usually will post a finishing pic after a big race.

@jhorstma that picture is stunning!! Wow!
Todays QOTD came from a fellow poster on this forum. Thanks for the suggestion!

QOTD: I would be interested to hear the groups thoughts on posting runs on social media. Does everyone post each run on Instagram? Facebook? Find it annoying? Follow any inspirational runners on social media?.
I do not post every run on social media...I think it would get boring for the few people that follow me! :)

Mostly I post if I really like the outfit I'm wearing or after a race to show off the bling! I don't find it annoying when others post. :)

@michigandergirl YOU GOT THIS!! (please tell me the same thing next weekend when I'm posting how nervous I am)

Question related to yesterday RE: shoes...When does New Balance announce new runDisney shoes during the year? Is it a one time thing and then the new ones start showing up at the rundisney expos? If any catch my eye this year I may be tempted to check them out...but was not sure how the new batch is announced.

Usually a race photo or two on facebook for my family to see. I can't think of any time we've posted our times other than maybe twice when I PR'd. Chris is trying for 20 races this year so he always posts what # he has achieved (he's on 15 now!) Sometimes on instagram but I post way more makeup and food pics there. And the race pics are usually just outfit related :)
I tend to get annoyed by the ones that post every single garmin watch readout of every training run, so I un-follow. I follow some people from here on instagram and other rundisers just so I can be extra jealous of disney races I'm not doing!

SIDENOTE: There are a handful of people in my life that started running or took back up running over the last two years because of or at least partially because my hubby & I posting our race recaps on facebook. Then they ask us about it in person. We are running with some of them in races this Fall! Kind of a "if you guys can do it, can I?" situation. It's how I started with posts from a family member and friend that I asked myself the same question. I think that's a good thing.

ATYQOTD - I track shoe mileage with Garmin Connect. I rotate 5 pair of shoes, so I need a system. Used to use spreadsheets - GC is easier.

ATTQOTD - I don't have a facebook account and only use twitter to follow Alabama football (have never tweeted anything). I post some run information in running forums, like this one. That's it. I am a pretty private person.

The only thing I will post to social media is the occasional post-race picture or update from a big race. Nothing for training runs or little local events.

I don't post each run on social media but I'll post long runs once in a while and I always post races especially Disney ones. As for runners I follow I pretty much only follow rundisney runners.

I think they'll announce shoes for 2017 sometime in December and that'll be it for the year. In 2015 they had a lot of different designs but I think they ran out of steam/ideas by the end of the year. :p

They usually announce them for the January races and then they use those shoes all year. They'll announce them a couple weeks or so before the race.

I generally don't post any training runs on social media. Who wants to read about yet another run, bike, or swim workout I have done? I will post pictures, though, if I'm someplace fun, pretty, or otherwise potentially interesting. This is why I never put out any photos of my lovely parking lot in Iraq but did upload one yesterday from my swim at the beach next to the Burj al Arab.

Back from the Lake Powell Half Marathon - ran all the way from Arizona to Utah! From Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time, so an interesting situation where chip time was 2:53 (a new PR for DW, and done without her getting hurt, so mission accomplished!) but clock time was 1:53 (started at 6:30, finished at 8:23) - or maybe we finished at 10:23 for a clock time of 3:53 - so confusing. It was an anniversary trip for us - celebrating 7 wonderful years together! (well ok, we were married in 1990) - and DD (Dopey Daughter) had Fall Break from VT and was able to join us, making it even more special!

And for every time I get asked, this is why I run:

Congratulations on your race! Lake Powell is a common quick vacation spot here- I'll have to look into to that race in the future to combine with a family trip :)

ATTQOTD: I'm a bit of a instagram addict, so I do post a lot there in general. I post every race, but I usually just post important runs to me (a long mileage for me, if it was especially pretty, extreme weather . . . ) I post a small percentage of my instagram pics to Facebook.

ATTQOTD: I'm hit or miss with posting stuff. If I'm running somewhere out of my usual area (like on vacation), I'll post a pic. When I did the 10x10 challenge, I posted daily. Mainly that was so I could get moral support from people to finish. I'll live track my races, but I don't run a ton of them. I have posted some of my longer training runs (20 milers only). My friends and family saw me go from an overweight person who couldn't run 60 seconds to someone extremely fit who can run a marathon, so I get good feedback from them about motivating them to move more. I post way more stuff about my kid though. It's not all running all the time.

I generally don't like to make my social media presence too known. I will often post about races after they are over but I rarely post my workouts. I'm in a local running group where many people post not only their runs but the routes they took. I always find this unsafe because if it's a route you take regularly it opens it up for anyone to track your movements. Maybe I watch to many crime dramas but that's always been a concern of mine.

Right there with you! Yikes, I wouldn't do that!

It's a fantastic course - point-to-point starting with a loop around Page and the Rim Trail, then down to and across the bridge by the dam, then down to the finish at the marina on the Utah side of the lake. A net downhill point-to-point race, with the only tough uphill being on the other side of the bridge, and all paved with the exception of the 2 mile trail run (which was absolutely incredible). Great town, wonderful people, well run, park next to the start or walk to it from your hotel, quick shuttles back from the finish line party - if you can swing it go for it!!

I don't post much of anything, unless I ran across a really pretty view -- I am on instagram, so would be more likely to post something there (to a smaller select group of friends) over Facebook.

I do have a few friends who post every.single.run -- which I tend to start scrolling past. I do like hearing about people's races, as it gives me ideas for future races to consider!

In terms of who I follow, the various RunDisney accounts, the local running store, Runner's World, a few RunDisney-related people (Mickey Milers, etc), Another Mother Runner. I listen to the podcasts affiliated with all those groups too, and enjoy those while I run!

I have friends who post constantly, all day long. Not sure how they get any work done. I just don't understand this mindset. A private journal I get, but why would anyone believe that their friends or family want that kind of detail about their daily life?

Just ate an apple. Yum! (see picture inset).

Really? o_O
