The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: Like some others, running is the only thing that clears my congestion if I'm sick but it returns about 5-10 min afterwards. Depending on how desperate I am to not get sick, I might wear a mask at work. I did it the the last week of my pregnancy and the one time I didn't, someone who I thought was "well" actually was sick and I got a nasty case of bronchitis, which turned into back spasms, which turned into water breaking!

@LSUlakes hope everything clears before Sunday!

ATTQOTD: Yup, hand washing, lots of fluids, and taking Airborne at the first sign up body aches or sore throat. I did discover this year that when I'm in periods of extreme stress my body gets achey, so I think I'm getting sick but then after a few days I realize it's just stress (I need more yoga in my life!). I also feel more vulnerable to catching something after a really long run.

I just realized that a quick trip I am taking in January is at the tail end of Marathon weekend (DH has a work conference so I am tagging along). I will be on the lookout for you guys in your medals and be sure to give lots of praise! :cheer2:

QOTD: With cooler temps and higher mileage, we as runners seem to be at a higher risk to catching the common cold. What do you do to try to prevent from getting sick during the fall and winter while ramping up the training? If you do get sick what do you do to try to recover quickly?

ATTQOTD: Like others I try to drink a lot of water and wash hands frequently. I also work in a hospital so washing hands is a pretty ingrained practice. I sometimes take Emergen-C shortly before a trip. I'm not sure if it really helps me or not, but I guess I figure it's probably not going to hurt.

QOTD: Hand washing, kids hand washing, good sleep. I work from home now and don't have much human interaction ;-) so that helps! I used to work in Boston and took public transportation -- I made a conscious effort not to touch anything, and chose to walk one leg of my commute to avoid the T, and it really helped cut back on my sickness last winter.

ATTQOTD: Wash hands constantly! Hand sanitizer if I'm somewhere where I can't wash my hands such as after getting gas for the car or using the ATM. I drink lots of water and try to get enough rest. If I feel something maybe coming on I'll start taking airborne and if it gets worse I'll turn to Zinc (Zicam spray). As many of you know its hard to avoid germs when you have two school age kids. DD is in theater and during her performances I work the microphones, which means taking mic's off and putting them on sweaty little kids. So I'm guaranteed to get a cold in early November during those two weekends. I also get a flu shot every year.

ATTQOTD: I have a kiddo in daycare who likes to bring home germs. She also likes to wipe her nose on me (not a tissue, directly onto my arm or shirt or pants.) I'm trying to break that habit. So there is a ton of hand washing. I try to wash my hands after helping her blow her nose everytime. I have a lot of hand cream everywhere in the winter because my hands get so dry from all the hand washing and just general dry weather. Also I feel like the habits I have picked up from running (hydrate more, go to sleep earlier, talk to people online more than in the "real world" (jk)) has helped me at least feel healthier usually. #nojinx
I got a doozy of a cold before my very first 10k but soldiered on...I guess just going into any race training knowing anything can happen is the best plan when you have a germy kiddo around.

ATTQOTD: I have an answer, but first...

FALL HAS FINALLY ARRIVED IN FLORIDA!!!!!!!!!!!! :dancer:

Back to the QOTD: Every year I live in fear of getting the flu. After one too many allergic reactions, my doc cut me off: no more flu shots. I've had influenza 3 times and wound up with a secondary infection each time: bronchitis once, pneumonia twice. So... yeah. Bad lungs. I wash my hands like I'm scrubbing in for surgery, never touch my face, mouth or eyes, or eat, without first washing, don't shake hands if I can possibly avoid it, and try to stay out of confined spaces filled with humanity. My son came down with the flu on Christmas Eve a couple years ago, tested positive and all. I called my doc's after-hours line and she called in a Rx for Tamiflu for ME to use proactively - it worked, no flu for me! So I keep that little nugget of info in my mental back pocket, just in case.

Ugh, did I really say 4 hours for a 50K trail race? I must have been drinking when I came up with that goal. I'm going to change that to 4:15 and even that is a stretch. I think my goal should just be to hit the Hillbilly Beer Aid Station on both loops, that's one I can handle :)

ATTQOTD: I have a five year old and twin three year olds so sadly it's not a "if" but a "when" I get sick situation most of the time. All three are very kind in sharing the germs they pick up throughout the year. We try to wash hands and stay as healthy as we can but it seems inevitable someone will get sick in our house. I have found that trying to get sleep and drinking water really does help in staying healthy.

@LSUlakes, no time goal for me for my race this weekend. Just going to use it as a training run with food trucks at the finish!

I wash my hands and drink a ton of water. Other than that, I just make sure to eat and sleep well. I also haven't been too worried now that the race I had been training for most is done.

ATTQOTYD: I have done a lot of trail runs. My first races were actually trail runs. The ones I run have a long(ish) (5-10 miles usually and one race that's a half/full) and short option (usually around a 5K distance). When I started, I did the short option. Its a great way to get your feet wet. Trail running is really fun to me because of the scenery and getting to go to different state parks etc., the fact that you are running on soft ground, and the ups and downs of the hills are challenging (nothing is more fun than cruising down after a lot of up up up lol).

You will fall eventually. I have fallen quite a few times. Pay attention to the ground when running and be ready to catch yourself if it happens. Don't be afraid to go slower than your road race time (this is the norm). I highly recommend it!

ATTQOTD: I have been working at home since 2000, so I don't get sick much anymore. :) I don't really take any special precautions. I did get a minor cold on my trip to FL to visit my parents 2 weeks ago, but thankfully it never really made it out of the head cold stage. I had about a week of runny nose and sneezing and aches and pains, and started a little bit of a dry cough over the weekend, but it never progressed, and no cough for a couple days.

So I have trying to figure out why you are putting in so many miles lately. Today when I made the race announcement I then realized why. Best of luck to you! Is this a stepping stone to the Barkley marathons?

Random Question to my Disney loving friends... How much time can you spend at Disney Springs? 1/2 day?

We got really really cheap flights ($92 roundtrip) for the beginning of November and are planning on doing HP World this trip and staying at my inlaws time share. I've never stayed off site at Disney/not had Disney park tickets. I was thinking of going to DS for a bit to help ease my no-Disney trauma.

I live on Emergen-C and Zicam through the winter. It's not 100% guaranteed, but there have been many times where I was the only one in my family or workplace not to get sick.

With my allergies and sinus issues I can never tell if I have a cold or not. Running actually clears up my stuffed up nose so that helps. Otherwise I take allergy and/or cold medication. I never really get full on sick though. An occasional cough and runny nose is about it.

Same here. I have 365 days a year allergies. Sometimes I'm not sure whether I'm getting a cold or not.

1/2 day to a full day. I actually had no park tickets on my last trip. I did Disney Springs and resort hopped for the whole trip and had a blast.
