The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?

I really don't like carrying anything with me (this is one of the reasons I don't listen to music either). I also don't like running multiple circuits or loops, so I plan out my route, and if it's longer than about 90 minutes, I will actually take the car and drop a water bottle or two (sometimes Gatorade) at locations where I will need them. I then put a GU packet or two in my zippered shorts pocket, and off I go. When I get to a water bottle, I will carry it for a bit as I drink on the run, then deposit it into a garbage can along the way (or I will place it where I can return by car to retrieve it afterwards). Most of my runs are under 90 minutes, so this process doesn't occur too often (at most once a week when I'm doing my longer training runs).

Also, for races, I carry GU in my zippered shorts pocket and use the water stops they provide.

ATTQOTD:

I have a camelback that I can use on long training runs, 12 miles plus. For medium runs 5-12 I carry a hand held and below 5 miles I don't bring any hydration. I do have a fuel belt that I carry gels, my phone, ID and emergency money if I am on a long run or I use my Camelback. For races I carry gels and use the aid stations or carry my hand held for hydration. I have had several races this year that required a wide mouth hand held and at the aid stations they poured water/Powerade in for you. It actually worked very well.

I do need to find a better fitting hydration pack moving forward as my camelback works but leaves a lot to be desired in fit and efficiency in reaching things, etc. Bought it a few years ago without really understanding what I needed. Wasn't a big deal but it is becoming an issue in longer runs.

ATTQOTD: I have a handheld that I use for shorter runs if it's hot, and for long runs (over 7 miles), I have a Fitletic water belt (2-bottle). I like to wear my water belt during races. I like to be in control of my fueling. It makes me anxious to have to wait for aid stations.

BTW, I pulled the trigger and switched our reservation to the Boardwalk for April. Thanks for all the advice!! :stitch::goofy::tigger:

I imagined this phrase uttered like this:

NoCapes!.gif

Excellent, because that is EXACTLY how I say it, lololol! :thumbsup2

ATTQOTD: So far my hydration system is putting a water bottle on my porch and also going to the local park water fountains. Once winter hits I'll be on the treadmill a lot so it will change to putting the water in a cup holder. I may have to revise this strategy in the spring when I train for a half. Since up to this point the longest I've ever been out running is just over 1hr 15min.
For my longer runs I tend to have a few sports beans with water before I go out and some when I get back...so I'm not really a "carry things with me" person just yet.

ATTQOTD: I don't carry any hydration with me, but instead plan my routes so I'm hitting water fountains at a regular interval.

The local parks around me HAVE NO WATER FOUNTAINS!! I seriously couldn't believe this when I went on my first summer running COUTING on being able to drink! I have stopped in a McDonalds or Wendys to get some ice water if the situation is desperate and I don't have my hydration pack with me.

Mine has been officially cancelled... Thanks Matthew

Sorry about the cancellation. This hurricane is very worrying. I heard that the death count in Haiti is quite high! :sad1:

I recently got a belt in my StrideBox but I haven't gotten used to using it yet so I've only worn it on short runs. I do have a Camelbak Dart that I use for long runs (8+ miles) or hot/humid runs where I won't have access to water (80+ degrees & 5+ miles) and I really love it. I only have one water fountain every 3.5+ miles on my long run route and there's not many places to hide water so it's easier to just use the camelback.

I haven't needed to carry any when I'm racing but I do try to avoid summer races.

No belts or hydration systems.

Side note: Everyone is Florida and along the coast stay safe! Take cover when told. I am following this storm closely even though it doesn't affect me.

ATTQOTD: I use a Nathan's Trail Mix hydration belt for any runs longer than 5 miles. I do kind of wish that it held a little more water, as I have a hard time rationing it out to last more than 10 miles. (Or, maybe I just need to learn to use less water when taking a GU.)

This week we have the following folks with races coming up:
09 - @JohnRPG - Towpath Half Marathon (2:45:00 / N/A)

I'm still limping/walking with a cane from my injury on Saturday. So, I think it'd take a miracle for me to be able to run this weekend. :(

If I am doing a long run I am usually able to plan my route with water fountains so that I don't need to carry anything. In a pinch I will also duck into a Starbucks or McDonald's to get a cup of water (do this on the bike as well). If I am running up at the cottage where it's very rural and there aren't any other water options I will carry a bike bottle with me and drop it at the side of the road, then run 4-mile loops and drinking every lap. Finally, if I am doing a long run on the trails I will wear a hydration backpack...it has a 2L bladder that stays nice and cool plus I can throw a few other items in there like bars, my phone, keys, etc.It took a bit to get used to, but it is worth it. I did one 15 mile trail run without it and was getting pretty spacey by the end, thinking stupid thoughts like "hey why don't I drink the water in that (probably polluted) stream?" Never again will I run long on trails without it!

My current hydration system consists of bottles of Tailwind and water left on the edge of the wall near the back entrance to the hotel. After each full up/down/over/back loop of the parking lot, I stop for a few quick sips of each. I will bring my Fuel Belt with its bottles full of Tailwind to the race with me and plan to use them, but who knows how I'll feel by then. I might decide to live on flat Coke for the rest of the night.

Ah yes, never underestimate the powers of Flat Coke.

Today I worked out my training plan for the Turkey Trot 5 miler. I'm going to do a hybrid of Hal Higon's 8k novice and intermediate plans. I'm doing the long run miles of the intermediate and the cross training, but staying with three running days which is the novice plan.

Isn't it a bit late to get started on Turkey Trot training? Thanksgiving is on Monday! Oh wait, that's only here in Canada. Happy early Thanksgiving folks :)

I actually have not used one for a race and yet and regretted it each time. The 10k I just did didn't have a water station until half way in and then had another one 3/4 of the way to the finish. Really needed that water sooner thanks to my own over-enthusiasm at the start. I think the next one, I'll wear a belt with at least a little water. I wear the belt each time I do my practice runs. Most times I don't need the water but when I do, boy am I glad to have it.

So everything in Florida is closed, government officials telling people to get out. Schools closed, theme parks closed or closing, ect.... But the University of Florida will not even consider a change of venue for the game this Saturday. Sure LSU we will push the game back 2 hours, but not a night game because we may not have power. Not to mention that means LSU is flying into Tampa for 1:00PM tomorrow which happens to around the time the storm is passing. But also, what ever fans are crazy enough to drive that way Friday are also crazy. The whole situation is a cluster, and I would be very surprised if the game is played at all this Saturday. Having said that, the weather will be nice on Saturday, but God only knows how bad off the state as a whole will end up. If they play Saturday, I am betting maybe 20k show up.
End Rant.

I use a CamelBak and a SpiBelt. The Camelbak holds 70 liquid ounces of water or Gatorade. I only wear it on runs 13 miles or longer (unless it is really hot and humid out - then that would drop down to 10 miles). I wear the SpiBelt for Gu or E-Gel packets. I only use those products on runs 16 miles or longer.

ETA - All of my runs are out/backs on roads or trails with no options for stashing water, so the Camelbak is a 100% requirement. Also, I use the SpiBelt in races, but not the CamelBak. I drink whatever the race organizers have to offer at the water stops.

I heard about that, but it is all about TV revenue. I doubt that FL can decide to cancel this on their own since the weather is supposed to be great 12 hours before kick-off, and that locale is not expected to take a direct hit. This is likely a network decision - a network owned by Disney.

Ah, hydration. One of my main frustrations has been trying to find a hydration solution that works for me! Alas, most have not. Here’s what I’ve tried and discovered as part of aquaquest 2015-2016:

1. Nathan Triangle Waist Pack – Worked great when I was just walking, but not so well for running. Doesn’t bounce around too much, but getting the bottle in and out and making sure it was secured with the elastic loop (or it would fall out) was just not comfortable.

2. Nathan Trail Mix (2 bottles) – Worked pretty well for running, but the low capacity of the bottles combined with the belts tendency to shift and rotate around my waist drove me nuts. Plus the pocket in it is tiny! Had to add an extra pocket for my phone.

3. Camelbak Marathoner Vest – Very comfortable. Great capacity. Lots of storage space. Not well insulated, though. Doesn’t keep water cool for long, at all, as body heat warms the bladder. The biggest pain, though, is cleaning the bladder and tubing. Not easy at all. Revisiting this one right now.

4. Orange Mud Single Barrel Hydraquiver – Comfortable to wear with a lot of good storage space. Capacity is limited to the bottle sizes that will fit into the “quiver”. Surprisingly easy to get the bottle into and out of. The downside here is the volume limitation. Good choice for “tweener” runs that need hydration, but not Camelbak-volume hydration.

I typically don’t carry water with me for anything less than 7 miles. From 7-11 mile training runs, the Hydraquiver is my go to solution. Anything above 11 miles and the Hydraquiver just doesn’t have the volume I need and I don’t want to spend the money for the double barrel variety right now, so I’m back to the Camelbak. My last 14 miler went very well with the Camelbak.

I have never carried my own hydration during a race, relying exclusively on aid stations. After the success I’ve had on my longer training runs with the Camelbak, I’m considering using it during my upcoming marathon, as I’m a little concerned about getting enough fluid at the aid stations to fully support my fuel intake.

Good to know! I am also on a quest. For shorter runs, I am liking the Flipbelt with a bottle in it. I use this for fuel as well. For longer runs (which I won't be doing for a long long while), I am considering a Camelbak. I don't like carrying anything either, but I have been between water stops and desperate for water before.

Ridiculous. I saw a headline that Miami was still considering whether to move the Dolphins game. Seriously?

ATTQOTD: Handheld Amphipod for hydration and Basic Fitletic belt or Flipbelt for phone, key fob, gels, pepper spray, Chapstick, tissue, plastic grocery bag, or whatever I need for a particular run. (Never need all this on a single run!) No hydration bottle during a supported race, but basic belt at least for phone even on 5k's.
